Could I Be a BUFF BRIDE??

October 20th, 2008 @ 1:54 pm by Mrs. Ballet Flat

Psshh… I wish! At 260 something pounds, I could WISH to be a buff bride. However, I’m trying to lose weight before the wedding. No, not 100 lbs exactly, but hoping for 50. I know I won’t be the buff bride everyone thinks of, but to me, I’ll be at my lowest weight as an adult, and by that, I’ll feel GREAT!!

If you want before pictures, check out our e-pics;). So, a few weeks ago, I asked, who is gonna take on the task of whipping my butt into shape for this?? Well, it didn’t take me long to think back a year ago…..

Last year, my fiance and I applied for Season 5 of the Biggest Loser Couples. We didn’t hear a word from casting (probably because our video was lame) but we were determined to peel the pounds away! I remember thinking, I want Jillian Michaels to kick my butt! I want her to make me cry, whine and then in the end, I would be stronger, beautiful and most importantly, healthy!! So who else would train me for my big day??

While I don’t have tens of thousands of dollars to book her personally, I decided to consult the resources I could afford. In comes amazon.com. Oh, my love for amazon.com… I’ll save that for another post. Anyway, here’s trainer Jillian in her HIGHLY popular 30 Day Shred.

This video is wonderful. It’s set up like a circuit workout, where in little time you are burning the most calories possible, because you are working with several muscle groups at once! There are 3 sets of circuits, each 6 minutes each (3 minutes strength, 2 minutes cardio, 1 minute abs). It has 3 levels of workouts, and I recommend you start at level 1 (no matter your fitness level). You only need to buy handweights (I bought 3 lbs. and that’s QUITE a challenge here), and a yoga mat if you are working out on a hard floor (trust me, push-ups on a hard floor will hurt you!).

This workout only takes 20ish minutes, and you WILL be sore and crying after the workout. However, you will notice clothes fitting better and you, in general, just feeling better! I know after I workout, I feel like I can climb Everest… ok, maybe not Everest, but maybe the Mississippi River Levee near my home.

I lost 4 lbs my first two weeks doing the Shred (in combination with Weight Watchers). It’s not that much, but hey, you carry a 4 lb dumbbell and you will see just about what 4 lbs feels like! I will admit though, lately, I’ve lagged in my workouts and diet, but I’m back on track and I’m sure Jillian will kill me all over again! I kinda can’t wait! Bring on the pain, Jillian!

If you’re a bride, are you trying to be a buff bride? If so, what’s your regime looking like?

Hi Miss Ballet! I wish you luck on the shred. I’m about to start it too. I heard it works and it’s a definitely no pain no gain kinda workout. I can’t diet (i love food!) so that means I have to workout. Keep going at it! Wish you luck!

That video sounds really good. May have to buy it myself. I want to lose about 20 pounds before the wedding. I am doing my best to cut out carbs and my FI and I will be joining a gym in a few weeks.

Congrats! Loss of poundage is always something to celebrate! I need to work on my dedication and motivation so I can be a buff bride. I always say that I should be working on homework, but then end up sitting with the FI and watching TV, so I’m not doing myself any good. Maybe Jillian’s workout is what I need.

I have her video too. I think she gets a bit annoying but her workouts are a challenge and they do make your muscles burn. I also purchased a hip hop dancing video that I think is great to do on days I feel kind of lazy.

I’ve been shredding it on and off for a month! I LOVE THAT VIDEO! I love her tough love approach, and how quickly the circuit goes by. YAY for fellow Jillian followers!

Miss Ballet - that’s great! Good for you! I did Weight Watchers last year to fit into a horribly unflattering BM dress I had to wear, and while I don’t follow the plan anymore, I definitely haven’t put on any of those lost lbs. I just rejoined the gym and have been taking yoga classes for my Buff Bride routine. I still have 8 months, but it’s never too soon to start. For those of you girls really looking to change the shape of your figure, I swear by yoga. With all the twisting, I immediately saw a smaller waist!

I’m so proud of you Ms. Ballet Flat! Kudos to you and your determination! If you ever need some more inspiration/workout ideas, check out crossfit.com (be sure to check out some of the videos on the left side panel)! My sweetie is a trainer and bases many of his training sessions on these workouts. I have done quite a few of these workouts (adapted, of course, for us mere mortals) and man, they kick your patooty! The clips of other “everyday” folks doing crossfit are very inspiring too.
I wish you all the best in your healthy, buff bride pursuits! Keep up the great work Ms. Ballet Flat!

Miss Ballet Flat, I think you look absolutely beautiful in your engagement photos. If you’re concerned about your health, good for you for doing what you need to get and stay healthy. But don’t worry about losing weight just to lose weight. You look beautiful as you are, and you will be beautiful on your wedding day no matter what you weigh.

Good for you! I have given up trying to be a skinny girl on my wedding day (I’m a bit chubby) but I have been working out and doing lots of weight-lifting classes, and they are AWESOME! I can tell the difference in my toned arms which will look so much better in my dress. Just remember — you will look beautiful on your wedding day. I know it can be hard once in a while not to get down on yourself that you (we) dont’ look like the brides in the magazines, but remember — your future husband thinks you’re hot and you’ll be glowingly beautiful no matter what on that special day. :-) :-)

Oh I SO heart Jillian! I have long wanted for her to kick my butt too! It would be so awesome to have her as a personal trainer. I have actually been considering that video, so thanks for the review!!

You go girl, and even if you have a big goal. Loosing only a few pounds a week is actually better for you, well at least that’s what my mom always told me (she is a dietitian). You don’t want to loose too much too fast, it’s better to loose a smaller amount but regularly.
Keep it up and start a healthy marriage with your future husband, you should do it together to keep motivated. I always find exercising to be easier with my husband.

Way to go! Keep it up!! I too just bought this video and am waiting for it to arrive…maybe today, actually. I am also trying to watch carbs and for me…it’s all about portion control!! That is my major downfall. I have 9 months and am hoping to lose about 3 pounds. So, keep it up!

Just a note to anyone out there looking to lose 20+ lbs for their wedding. I went on a doctor written diet that included a prescription to Bontril that worked AWESOME!. You can’t take it if you have heart or thyroid problems, but if you’re just a healthy girl looking to lose some lbs, it is a great appetite suppressant. Most doctors would prescribe it if you had at least 20lbs to lose, and with that drug and carb cutting, I lose 30 lbs in about 3 months, which I have now kept off for a year. Look it up and talk to your doctor if you are interested.

I agree! 4 lbs is a great place to start! Congratulations:)

I have been doing WW and have had some success with that; my Mom is kicking my butt and has lost 35lbs since May.
