Proof of Engagement

October 20th, 2008 @ 4:16 pm by Mrs. Hot Cocoa

[Samuel Lippke via Snippet & Ink]

Let’s split up this year into two epochs: BWB and AWB (”before Weddingbee” and “after Weddingbee”). BWB, I used to get work done on my dissertation. AWB, what dissertation? BWB, I’d never heard of engagement photos. I mean, what do we need engagement photos for? Proof of engagement?! I guess I figured that people take an engagement photo to put in, say, a wedding announcement, but the idea of taking a whole series of photos with a professional photographer before the wedding was… um, inconceivable? weird? a seeming waste of money?

AWB, I was a bit more conflicted. I saw beautiful and personality-filled engagement shots from Bees like Mrs. Petunia and Mrs. Daffodil, and I really liked the idea of having some photographs of Mr. HC and me chillaxing in our natural environment (okay, more like our aspirational natural environment, since our actual natural environment is on the couch, watching yet another Degrassi marathon). But I wasn’t so sure that it was a good use of our budget. The ramen ain’t gonna buy itself, yo.

Then I started researching wedding photographers and realized that many not only encourage booking e-sessions but actually require it. My first thought: blech, yet another scam perpetuated by the wedding industrial complex. I will not be suckered into yet another wedding “must have”.

But then we were lucky enough to book the uber-talented Leigh Miller as our wedding photographer. She not only came up with an affordable package for us, she also made a darn good case for why an engagement photo session makes good sense.

[Leigh Miller Photography]

Here, courtesy of Leigh, are some reasons why an e-session might be a worthwhile investment, if you can find a little extra room in your budget for it (yeah, I’m still not of the “must have” school of weddings):

(1) “So I can see how couples are in front of the camera. Sometimes I find out I have a blinker, and I had one groom who was so nervous about doing the session he was woozy! Yes, I thought he was going to faint! These are all good things to know before the wedding day. (That groom was fine by the wedding day as he was broken in during the engagement session - haha!).”

[Gorgeous e-pic of Katharine, Ryan, and Cali by Jennifer Paschal]

(2) “It’s a good chance for the couple to get comfortable in front of the camera.”

(3) “It’s a great chance to spend some time with your photographer. I love hanging out with my couples and the engagement just helps us bond even more. It builds trust, and they have the confidence now that they will photograph beautifully on the wedding day.”

[Leigh Miller Photography]

So, long story short, in just a few weeks, Leigh will be joining Mr. HC and me in Boston to take our engagement photos. And I couldn’t be more excited to meet her and to frolic in front of her lenses. As for Mr. HC? He doesn’t do frolicking, but I think he’ll grin and bear it. ;) Leigh, we hope your Photoshop skills are well-honed, because we are going to need some serious fixin’!

Grooms and brides, what do you think? Will you be booking a professional e-session? Rocking a rad DIY session, like Miss Blush? Or putting your money elsewhere? And if you’re doing one, what are you hoping to capture in your e-sessions?

I love this post, so much engagement photo eye candy!!! :)

I felt the same way that you did before we booked our photographer- it was just an added expense! Luckily she includes the e-shoot with all of her wedding packages, and won’t “trade” the session for prints or other extras, for the reasons you highlighted above.

Have fun on your shoot, can’t wait to hear about it!

ps- we did a few “warm up” shots on our couch at the beginning of our engagement session! :)

I like the idea of engagement photos, I really do, and for the reasons that you’ve posted above. Both my fiance and I are a bit camera shy, so I think that an engagement session would help us feel at ease with our photographer.

That said, whether or not we do them will depend on whether or not they’re included in our package or not, or how much the photographer will charge us. Do I want to spend $500 or more for an engagement shoot? Hayle to the no. But if we can make it work, we’re definitley doing it. And if not, we will DIY it, my MOH is pretty handy with a camera. :)

@chelsea: I’m so thrilled you found this post; you guys look stunning in both your e-pics and wedding pictures — the wedding is probably my favorite set of wedding photos. Tec is such a fab photographer, and I am in love with your Etsy items.

@msmacey: Yay! I’m sure your photos are gorgeous. Leigh really delivers!

Incidentally, I can’t believe I used the word “chillaxing.” What am I? An 18-year-old stoner? Sorry, won’t happen again.

My only requirement was that my make-up didn’t look hookerish so that I would look pretty. Mr. Dumpling is naturally nice-looking so I wasnt worried about him. I didnt care where they were, what we wore, what we were doing, just that my make had to be good. I was all for the e-pics, especially since they were free!

Umm…only 18 year olds can say chillax?? *gulp* I wrote it in an email just today :-/

So anyway, we did our e-shoot this past Saturday and boy am I glad I did. It helped us confirm our photog has skills and patience. He laughed and joked with us.

While we walked to different areas he would show us the pics. It was awesome! The man took nearly 300 photos! It pays to kiss the photogs behind because he was generous enough to offer us another day if I wasn’t happy with my THREE HUNDRED. I mean come on, are you serious Jorge?? He was.

I’m a happy, happy girl. In our case the e-shoot was part of the package though.

@Miss Dumpling: You were stunning in your photos! And darn chic too.

@Shasha: LOL. Sorry — I just meant that I’ve never used the word chillaxing before. It just came out of nowhere, Poltergeist-style! 300 photos sounds amazing (but let’s not tell Mr. HC that he’s not just signing up for like ten photos — he might run)!

Oh wow, I’m so jealous that you were able to Leigh Miller–her photos are gorgeous. As a random WB reader/stalker, I know that you’re getting married in LA but was wondering if you had come upon any photographers in the Boston area that struck you as much as Leigh. We’re just starting to look around here and I would love to find someone with a similar style!

@E: I haven’t hit upon a photographer in Boston that is quite as lyrical as Leigh, but Anne Ruthmann (who I think just moved to the area) has a style that is very pretty, with lovely use of light and shadow: http://www.anneruthmann.com/. Let me know what you end up finding!

@Miss Champagne: I was thinking of taking Leigh to the Harvard campus, the Charles River (right by the Weeks Footbridge), and Beacon Hill. What do you think??
