Bodacious (Non-Floral) Bouquets

October 21st, 2008 @ 12:57 pm by Mrs. Meatball

Since we’re trying to be as eco-minded as possible in our planning, and it would be more fun to spend money on a keepsake bouquet that won’t die, I’ve been searching for an affordable non-flower alternative. Who knew how many cute ones I’d find?

Princess Lasertron - the bride in possibly the cutest real wedding to be published online last year—makes these magical felt flower and button bouquets and sells them to lucky brides via Etsy. How perfect are they? In all their cuteness, one can incorporate family jewels (heh), vintage heirlooms (Is that redundant? Nah.), or have the stems tied with a meaningful hankie. Too sweet.

These sexy bastards come courtesy of Emplume. These are so fly I can hardly take it! They suit my Bohemian rock star tastes juuuuuust right. As soon as I saw them, I wanted one so bad. They use feathers and assorted accoutrement to create custom AMA-ZING bouquets to last a lifetime. They’re whimsical, sensual and elegant. I love how the one in the first picture looks like it kinda has a lotus flower inside. Perfect for our theme!

They also do boutonnieres for the men…

Lastly, we have the most economical option… paper flower kits from Paper Source.

For about $15, you can make yourself a fun, whimsical, but not all that sturdy bouquet. It’s paper, so it’s not necessarily a more eco-option over flowers… but it is super affordable and funky-crafty. Not a bad choice.

So far, Emplume is holding onto my heart… I just can’t get over those feathers!

Anyone else going the non-floral bouquet route?

As a bird lover and card carrying audobon member :) I just want to point out that feathers can be harvested unethically (i.e. from threatened tropical species etc.). So if eco minded is part of your plan make sure you know where the feathers come from.

A word of caution on the paper flowers from paper source — they aren’t as easy to make as they seem. I bought them sometime last year thinking they would be a fun craft and a nice way to have flowers around the house more often than just special occasions. I would consider myself a moderate level paper crafter and I had a hard time keeping all the petals together to wrap around the very thin wire stems that are provided. The patterns for the petals have small tabs that you fold down to secure to the stem. I would recommend thicker card stock for the first set of petals (instead of the paper that is provided) or use thicker wire for the stems. I did eventually get a few made and they look okay, but I can also be a bit of a perfectionist sometimes!

This is what we’re doing too! We’re actually not going to have any flowers at all for the wedding. I can just think of so many other beautiful, sustainable objects that would make our venue beautiful.

In my quest for a non-floral bouquet, I found these and I think I’m going to go with the clear one: http://www.theflowerdiva.com/bouquets-crystal.shtml

They run about $250 - $350, but that’s not so bad considering the moolah you’re saving on avoiding flowers!

My bouquet was made of silk flowers and wooden roses. My mom made it. It was super cheap and now i have it for the rest of my life. It was beautiful. Let me know if you want to see a picture.

The emplume bouquets are sexy bastards indeed. You know about my love/hate relationship with feathers, but these are definitely in the love love love category.

my bouquet are from pricess lasertron. She also did the FIs bout among other treats for the weding. She’s fantastic and is by far themost wonderful etsy buyer I’ve dealt with (I’ve dealt with at least 20).

The Princess Lasserton bouquets are really cute–very genuine and sweet. I’d never seen the Emplume ones before but hubba hubba sister! Those are very fun! A little sass, a little class, and just a sprinkling of 1930s fan-dancer. Love them (especially the white one)!

[...] am loving the use of textures, with feathers contrasting the flowers. I’m having feathers in my bouquet, so this would be a great echo to that tactile and sassy [...]
