Phillips Winery About Me: Hi, I'm Miss Pomegranate and I'm a shopaholic. I have a weak spot for the chic cheap - especially anything I can re-create on the DIY. Shoes are my vice, music is my passion in life and technology is the medium by which I live and work. About Mrs. Pomegranate

Our flight to Portland didn’t leave until 6:45 PM on Sunday, so we had plenty of time to relax at home for a few hours and pack (no, we hadn’t packed yet). We caught up on Project Runway, did a few loads of laundry and filled our suitcases to the brim. Of course, as soon as our booties hit the plane seats, I began to take pictures using my iPhone, digital camera - whatever I could get my hands on to document our trip.

Our wedding rings on the plane. There are many of these, so I’ll only bother you with one - we were just too excited!

When we arrived in Portland it was drizzling a bit - the nice, cozy, fall weather we were looking forward to snuggle up in. We picked up our luggage and hopped on the MAX Light Rail for only $2.50 per person. We elected to nix renting a car as Portland’s metro transportation is amazing and it would have been a frivolous expense. The light rail dropped us off no more than 2 city blocks away from our Minimoon digs, the Hotel deLuxe.

Mr. Pomegranate maxin’ and relaxin’ on the MAX Light Rail.

When we arrived at the Hotel deLuxe , we were pleased to see that the photos on the website were pretty darn accurate - it was TOTALLY Hollywood Chic done right. I especially loved the gigantic round bed and the blue velvet chairs. The best part? A huge walk-in closet that kept the unpacking and dirty clothes clutter to a minimum throughout the week.

This is pretty much exactly how the room looked when we arrived - sans the blue Tiffany box, of course.

They didn’t mention the gorgeous view we’d have (taken the next morning)!

z169654
Our welcome champagne with a sweet card addressed to my new married name!

Once we settled in, we decided to head down to the hotel bar, The Driftwood Room. We drank a few cocktails, munched on fresh oysters and once I began to slur my words (more due to exhaustion rather than the alcohol), Mr. Pom and I decided to call it a night. This was my first experience enjoying oysters - who knew a little Tabasco could turn something slimy and gross into something fabulously tasty?!

These were our “official” seats for the week - I would have taken my own photo, but the lighting is deliciously dark in there.

The next morning, we headed down to breakfast at the hotel’s restaraunt, Gracie’s, where I dined on some incredible bread pudding french toast. It was amazing. So amazing, in fact, that I had it again via room service on our last day. I will miss you bread pudding french toast!!

z16965402
See the crunchy exterior made of corn flakes? It holds a warm, gooey, yummy treasure inside!

We headed to Powell’s Books, a must-see for any PDX tourist. I was in book heaven! Mr. Pomegranate had been to Powell’s before, so he insisted that we split up so that I could experience its awe on my own and meet at the cafe later. Both of us are huge book fiends, so after wandering around for a few hours, it was difficult to pare down my finds into a managable armful to purchase. After all, they must fit in our luggage to cart home! I came home with a signed copy of Chuck Palahniuk’s Diary (Chuck’s a local, you know), some chic-lit in the form of Lauren Weisberger’s Everyone Worth Knowing, and a little peek into our traveling future (France!!) in the form of Stephen Clarke’s A Year in the Merde.

Powell’s from the inside. Drool.

After Powell’s and some chai, we became pretty ravenous, so we headed to the Yelp-favored Ten 01. This was definitely the best meal we ate in Portland. From the perfect service - with an attentive (but not overly attentive), friendly, waitress - to the fabulously presented and tasty food. We took pictures of everything, but almost every time we dug in and took a bite before we snapped the shot, leaving us to figure out a way to position the forks so as to hide our bites.

z16964805
Fresh local beets with gorgonzola panna cotta.

z16964701
My Meal: Lamb chops with goat cheese gnocchi, asparagus and lamb au jus.

z16964702
Mr. Pom’s Meal: Steak with sweet corn yummies (that’s my own term for lack of remembering the menu wording) and potato chips.

z16964703
Flourless chocolate cake with sage ice cream and whiskey caramel sauce.

z16964704
It was reccommended that we pair the dessert with an Irish Whiskey - but we asked them to make it into an Irish Coffee for us.

z16964705
The surprise extra dessert that came with our check: a strawberry gellie, a chocolate caramel, a peach gellie, and a lemon cookie.

After that amazing meal, we headed back to the hotel to get ready for our concert that night - which will be covered in the NEXT post, The Pom’s Minimoon Part II: The Sigur Ros Concert & a Massage.

Oooh, a bookstore shopping spree! That would definitely be part of my ideal mini-moon! (You will love the Merde books by the way… I devoured the series. So funny.)

I am so jealous! We’re going on a east coast to west coast road-trip/snow-boarding trip as our honeymoon, and we’re planning on going to Oregon - I have never been to Oregon, but I KNOW it’s where I want to live for the rest of my life! Mr Gnome is originally from there but he’s been gone a while so I’ve been looking up hotels and public transit information on the web - this is good info. That bed looks soooooooooo gooooood! Like you, we are both looking forward to a couple of drizzly, nice, cozy, fall weather days! Aren’t those the perfect days to snuggle with your boo? Bliss.

Portland is a foodie’s dream city. My future in-laws live there, so we always make a list of 3 or more places we want to hit up whenever we visit. If I didn’t have to live in LA, i would live in PDX. Have a good time! If you’re there this weekend, go to the Saturday (& Sunday) Market!!!

I’m not a bee on here, but I do read quite often. As I was scrolling through, I was like, “wait, isn’t that Portland?” lol. I’m from here! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Ten 01!! In fact, one of my closest friends came to visit me recently and I took her there for happy hour which turned into dinner and I surprised her with a dessert that was to ask her to be my bridesmaid! The chef likes to give treats to his patrons and I think that’s so cool. Next time you are here, you have to check out Nuvrei Bakery. Goodness, they make the best flourless cookies! I discovered it because of the same friend who is a yelp-a-holic and she’s just great at finding these things. For anyone else reading this, Nuvrei also sells their goodies at Stumptown Coffee and Coffeehouse NW. I’m so glad you guys had such a great time here! :)

@beaninca: Sorry for the late reply - but I’m still using the software to get all those Thank You cards out in the mail. Thanks for the offer - but I think I’m going to keep it! :)

I love love love Hotel DeLuxe! We got married last year and we live in Portland. I had reserved just a Queen DeLuxe room but when we got there the receptionist said, “It looks like we’re upgrading you to the best room in the house.” So we got the Marlene Dietrich room too!!! And they didn’t even know we’d just gotten married…pure luck! I love the huge round bed :)
