Mrs. Taffy's Picture
Mrs. Taffy, Ann Arbor Age and Occupation: 28, Color and Materials Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Automotive Designer Engagement Date: May 9, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2009 Blogging Since: September 14, 2008 Venue: University of Michigan Union About Me: I’m a girl who is crazy about Mr. Taffy, sewing, dancing, almost all types of sweets, and our cute pet canaries. I dislike touching fuzzy fabric of any kind, eating somewhat squishy food, and Michigan winters. Mr. Taffy and I are having a blast planning our Ann Arbor wedding, and cannot wait to share our day with friends and family.
About Mrs. Taffy

Do you have really sensitive skin? Do you have to be super careful about which type of cleanser and moisturizer you use, or else have to deal with crazy breakouts? Yeah, me too.

taffy1

Oh, Cetaphil. How I love you.

A couple of months after Mr. Taffy and I started dating, my face started to break out. Really break out, like horrible, painful, inflamed—the worst my face had ever been. I racked my brain trying to think of the cause. I didn’t switch detergent, cleanser, makeup or moisturizer. I hadn’t changed the type of birth control I was taking, or the dosage. I wasn’t stressed out any more than I had been earlier that year. My eating habits were exactly the same. The only thing that was different in my life was Mr. Taffy’s presence. Hmmm.

Then I realized that the affected areas of my face were areas that came into contact with his beard and neck. Everything was clear except my chin and neck. Interesting.

I went to a few dermatologists, took all kinds of drugs, lotions etc, and nothing worked. Nothing would stop the breakouts from happening. After six months, I went to Mr. Taffy’s dermatologist. I told him that I thought that Mr. Taffy’s beard was responsible for my problem. He thought I was nuts, and gave me drugs and lotion. I tried it for a while, and gave up when it didn’t work.

Fast-forward a few weeks. I was still seeing Mr. T’s dermatologist regularly, even though I had given up on the drugs. All of a sudden, my face started to clear up. Really clear up. I kept telling Mr. T how excited and baffled I was that it was getting better out of nowhere! It turns out that Mr. Taffy stopped using his aftershave as an experiment. His beard wasn’t the problem, it was his skincare products!

I went to my next dermatology appointment with the bottle of Mr. T’s aftershave—Jason Organics 6 in 1 aftershave lotion. My dermatologist confirmed that there were over 10 ingredients that could cause an allergic reaction and inflammation, the biggest ingredient being lavender oil. I couldn’t believe it! I was so careful about the products that I used, how could I not think that what he used would rub off onto my skin? The dermatologist even admitted that he was surprised. He said that he had lots of women coming in and complaining about their boyfriend/fiance/husband’s beards, but he didn’t think it was a big factor in their skin problems. He admitted that even with his experience (40 plus years), he continues to learn from his patients.

I was extremely frustrated that something that could have been resolved as simply as throwing out his aftershave had caused me so much pain, and that it took so long (a year!) to figure out. My chin is still covered in scars (It doesn’t help that I am really pale. I have no pigment to cover them up!). I am hoping that by the time the wedding rolls around, most of the scars will fade. It was really rough when the breakouts were at their peak; my manager at work even made comments to me about how I “really needed to take care of my skin”. My self-esteem was pretty low for a while there, I was in constant pain in the chin area, and I kept insisting to Mr. T that my face wasn’t so bad before we started dating. It was awful!

I am hoping that I can spread awareness to you, dear readers, in case there is an aftershave or lotion secretly tearing your face apart. Beware of what skincare products your fiance uses!

P.S.—Mr. T was still using the Jason Organics 6 in 1 shaving lotion, because he loves supporting organic products and we didn’t think it mattered, since he washes it off, unlike the aftershave. Well, this summer I started breaking out again, and he stopped using it. The breakouts stopped. We think that he wasn’t rinsing well enough, and the residue was causing a reaction. What a nightmare!

Have you had allergic reactions to your fiance’s skincare products?

Aw, I know exactly how you feel. I had terrible skin from 1st through 9th grades (I know, super early) and I’ve never gotten over how self-conscious it made me! People who comment on it are insensitive and don’t realize how much that hurts.

For your scarring, have you tried any steroid creams? I use Cortisone on the red spots that are leftover after I’ve had a blemish, and it really helps calm things down. You might talk to your derm about something a little stronger for your wedding. I have extremely sensitive skin, and this has never caused any flare-ups.

Also, I’m in LOVE with Bare Minerals’ Blemish Therapy - it’s a powder that you dust on before you put on your makeup, and it has helped my skin so much!

I cant believe someone else is going through the same thing!! When I met my fiance my eczema got so bad I didn’t even want to leave my house. I have been to dermatologist and allergists multiple times and no one can figure out what it is. I made my fiance change his soaps, shampoo, laundry detergent and even toothpaste! Your story is proof that it must be something else he is using!!

Miss Taffy, do you remember what the other 10 ingredients that cause allergic reactions were?

@mlglass: I don’t offhand, as he only named a few by name and we have thrown the bottle out, but I’m pretty sure they were common herbal ingredients. I think witch hazel was one…
Maybe your fiance can stop using certain products, one at a time, so you can see if your skin clears up. I hope that you can figure it out soon!!!

@Wiglet: No, I haven’t tried any steroid cremes because I’m afraid that they will make me break out. After hearing that you can use them, I’ll probably give it a try. :)

@yelli: I didn’t feel bad at all, I was so relieved to be break out free! It was so painful, ugh.

Now if only i could *concoct* an allergic reaction to get my man to shave his hideous beard….

Just kidding.

I love Cetaphil though, it’s the best stuff ever.

I’m allergic to EVERYTHING. I use Cetaphil and it’s a lifesaver. But, after about a year of using the stuff in the bottle (from your picture above), I switched to the Cetaphil bar soap. It works SOOOOO much better.

Didn’t realize the JASON products had so many allergens in it– I’m sorry you had to go through so much.

I looove Cetaphil too– and the Method products, which are paraben- and phthalate-free.

Thanks for sharing, Miss T! People can be SO insensitive when it comes to skin. What business does your manager have giving you skincare tips? Anyway - that’s awesome that you figured it out all on your own. I had some mysterious forehead breakouts in college. I went to a dermatologist and after one visit she was ready to put me on Accutane. I was SO mad that she would suggest such a drastic option. It turns out, I was just extremely stressed out. I needed stress management, not Accutane. You have to go with your instincts. Even good doctors don’t always know what’s best. Glad you found the solution!! Sorry I’m a bit off-topic :)

@carly7215: The first place I went wanted to put me on accutane immediately too! I left after a few visits, they were horrible, and mean, actually.

I went on Accutane for the four months leading up to my wedding and stopped two weeks before to get my moisture back. It seriously saved my skin for my wedding photos and hopefully forever going forward. It’s an annoying process, but for me it was totally worth it! I think the dangers are a little over-hyped, and the important thing is to ensure you are not on too high of a dosage. I’m so glad I have a dermatologist I trust and feel comfortable with!

@violarulz: I have two scars from a breast biopsy & lumpectomy, and my girlfriends have been telling me about mederma, I just haven’t picked any up. I will soon, especially since it worked for your face. :)

@futuremrsbrown: I am so happy that it is helping you guys, I was seriously at my wits end trying to figure it out. I hope you clear up soon! :)

@Lauren: I actually took accutane right when I got out of high school, and had a hard time with it, mostly how it gave me crazy dried lips. My skin had been completely clear for so long, and since it was only in one area I knew it was something that Mr. Taffy was using & didn’t want to go back on accutane unless it was a last resort.

@RTW: I love Method products, but I haven’t tried the personal products, just the stuff to clean my house. I have canaries and can’t use anything toxic to mop & clean. Thanks for posting your blog entry, I will try some of their other stuff!
I use the Jason organics body wash & shampoo, and it doesn’t bother me, so far it is just their men’s shaving line that I react to.
