Southern Planning Resources

October 22nd, 2008 @ 11:56 am by Mrs. Lemonade

Since many of you are in the thick of it, this comes as no surprise, but wedding planning is hard work y’all! For those of us who are attempting to honor tradition by incorporating religious or regional customs, things can get even more harried.
Luckily there are tons of resources out there to help us out. The following is my short list of favorite Southern wedding inspiration and planning resources.

First off is one of my favorite sites, Southern Weddings Magazine. They are constantly featuring gorgeous Southern weddings with fabulous details.

Check it out; do you see what I mean?

I actually get a lot of my inspiration from magazines. Southern Living and Better Homes and Gardens totally rock my world each and every month.

Of course, who could forget good old Martha? Yes, I know Martha is a Yank, but month after month she earns her honorary ‘belle’ status.

Southern Planning Resources : wedding resources san antonio Wa98850OMG! Darci Miller’s wedding. Too. Freaking. Perfect.

Finally, there’s my collection of good old-fashioned hard covers.

Southern Planning Resources : wedding resources san antonio Taragua

I absolutely adore Southern Weddings by Tara Guerard and Liz Banfield. Each image is so graceful and lovely!

Southern Planning Resources : wedding resources san antonio Lillybe

I also adore Gayeden Metcalf’s books, particularly Somebody is going to Die if Lily Beth Doesn’t Catch that Bouquet: The Official Southern Ladies’ Guide to Hosting the Perfect Wedding. While it may be one of the longest titles ever, it is effing hilarious!! If you’re a Southerner planning your wedding, this little book is so awesome for a much-needed time out from “serious” wedding planning. The recipes are a bonus!

And yes, many of us do have two first names. :)

What’s your favorite regional wedding read?

Do they post a how-to for cutting THAT cake? It’s not my style, but totally awesome!

I have Metcalf’s book too…so funny, and pretty true. It reminds me to try some of the recipes.

I also love Southern Weddings blog but I like it more when they feature classically understated Southern charm type weddings. I don’t know if its just b/c of the financial times the country is going through but the one featured above just seemed so….excessive (maybe it was the manolos and the louboutins). I didn’t really identify with it as a southern wedding. It was beautiful (esp the cake) but I think a lot of the country is moving away from the over the top extravaganzas.

My favorite planning resource for Nashville weddings is Ashleys Bride Guide: http://www.ashleysbrideguide.com that has tons of local resources for the Middle Tennessee Bride!

That cake is crazy.

I guess there are two types of southern parties (and I’m a midwestern girl so I could be totally off): the Dallas type of overindulgence and excessiveness exhibited above and then the charming understated affairs.

There’s no focal point in that kind of wedding, it’s all sensory overload and purely a show of wealth. Big turnoff.

Southern Weddings is one of my all time favorites…also did you all ever go to faye and greer’s blog before they stopped blogging? Still great for resources…and I just discovered Cakes and Dreams and am loving that too!

I love these sites and have all of them on my blog reader, even though I’m not a southern bride. I do, however, effect a very convincing southern accent.

The Metcalfe/Hays book is seriously funny - especially if you’ve ever been around a real Mississippi wedding! They have another book “Being Dead is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral” that is also a must read.

Ooh, I’ll check out cakesanddreams!

I’ve had tons o’ fun trying to explain to my non-Southern friends that many, if not most, traditional Southern weddings not only feature no open bar, but no alcohol. ::insert horrified gasp here::

I gave a copy of the Metcalfe/Hays book to my MOH and each bridesmaid asking them to be in my bridal party! I wrote personal notes in the front of each book. All but one of my ladies is from Mississippi which made it even more special!
