In the Palms of My Hands

October 23rd, 2008 @ 10:25 am by Mrs. Meatball

Recently, I went to visit the lovely Sheetal for my Mehndi trial!

I have to say I had virtually no idea of what I was to expect. But Sheetal was a sweetheart and helped me understand how everything works. I brought her the photo of the design I thought I wanted, which she did a beautiful job with—and she offered to do a more traditional bridal design on my other hand.

Sheetal is a masterful artist that Miss Jasmine referred my way—and I’m so glad she did! Sheetal hand-drew the designs, piping henna from a small tube that really resembled chocolate icing on a cake. She was so sweet and talented. I’m really glad to have found her!

Isn’t Sheetal adorable?

See how dark it is at first? It’s really like having thin icing lines all over! The henna smelled like chai, too— so my senses were all confused. :)

I’m done! Now it just takes about 30 minutes to dry—like a facial mask. :)

Please ignore my tired, no makeup look. I forgot we’d be taking photo evidence!

After we got home, I crackled away the top coat of dried henna to reveal a pretty, orange-y design. Sheetal said the henna she used on me was about 4 days old and that fresher henna would leave darker lines. Here’s the finished product!

The drawing on the left is traditional—you can see drums, a peacock and various other instruments. On the right is my simpler lotus pattern… sorry it’s so blurry. I like elements of both, and I think for the wedding it might be cool to blend the two styles—contemporary and traditional, in the palm of my hands. :)

The next morning I got up, washed my face and hands, and found them even darker than the night before when those photos were taken! I’d say the color is a dark terra cotta, which suits my pale skin quite nicely.

What’s really cool about it is that you’d never notice it unless I turned my hands up, or waved, or something. It’s unobtrusive, and such a pretty surprise inside my hands. I have to say I even succumbed to a moment’s contemplation that this would make a cool permanent tattoo, but for now… it’s a fun, 2-week accessory. Even Mr. Meatball likes it more than he expected.

I highly recommend Sheetal to any SoCal brides considering Mehndi for their wedding, Indian or otherwise. Her prices are super reasonable, and she’s incredibly sweet and gentle. Feel free to PM me for her contact information.

I really love it on me, but I’m not sure I feel it for the wedding. I think it might be the one accessory it’s smart to omit… so I don’t have too much going on.

What do you think? Would you do it?

Oh hon, it is gorgeous!!! I love, love, love the design you chose. Isn’t Sheetal the sweetest? I was feeling awful the day I got my mehndi done and she was super comforting and kind. Not to mention the fact that she is so talented!

How pretty! I like the idea of moving it somewhere even more unobtrusive if you think it’s too much accessorizing - feet, or even somewhere under your dress where only you and Mr. MB will see it?

I think the designs are gorgeous. If you’re not sure about how it’ll look for the wedding, maybe you can use it for the rehearsal dinner, or a TTD shoot?

Very neat :) I agree with the other girls about maybe having your feet done.

How fun is henna! My friend bought a kit once (we were about 19 then) and we drew all sorts of dumb stuff all over us. LoL…and it lasted 2 weeks.
I love it your designs though. Especially the lotus design. It’ll look great for your wedding!

Very pretty designs. :)

I would, however, recommend that you perhaps look at something a tad bit more intricate for your “traditional” hand for your wedding day - after all, you only get to do that once! (I’m a mehndi artist, as well). I’d also recommend that you have your artist hide your FI’s initials in the designs on this hand, as per tradition. Then, you can play the nifty game of “you have to find your initials before we…. (i’m sure you can fill in the blank ;)).

I’m also interested in the fact that your artist only used a j-bottle instead of a cone. It is damn near impossible to get a flowing, delicate line from a j-bottle (as any mehndi artist worth their salt will tell you), though many artists in training will use bottles because they’re easier to master). If you’re wanting something more delicate, you’ll definitely have to ask her to use a cone, or find someone who does.

p.s. If you’re going someplace warm for your HM, I’d follow the PP’s suggestion and get your feet done as well. It’ll be a nice treat. And definitely involve as many female friends and relatives as you can. :)
