My Dress Saga

October 24th, 2008 @ 12:24 pm by Mrs. Cheese

A three dress bride? Possibly true.

Sigh. I have no idea what to do about my dress situation, so I’m hoping that you can help me. Pretty please? I’ll trade you embarrassing unflattering pictures of myself in return for your help.

{Mr. Cheese, if you’ve read this far, DELETE THIS EMAIL—he gets every one of my posts emailed to him by this service—NOW! QUICKLY!}

I’ve mentioned before that I’m busty and vertically challenged, so I wasn’t looking forward to dress shopping. I was looking for something unique, comfortable, glamorous, and “me”. Something that I could successfully wear while navigating the trail through our backyard. Uh, huh. Good luck, right? I was also a bit uncomfortable about the whole big-white-dress concept because this is my second wedding*.

It took three steps to get through the discomfort. First, I dropped by a bridal shop all by myself and asked to try a few things on. Without any pressure or need to be “the public me,” I tried on everything they had in my size. I didn’t take my camera (sorry!) but the shop owner and I assessed each style. In the end, I decided that I wanted a bridesmaid’s dress in white or cream—simple, inexpensive, practical, and flattering.

Then, I made an unexpected trip home to New Mexico, and my mom and I made a quick visit to a bridal shop there.

We agreed that a bridesmaid’s dress was the way to go (though she did try to talk me into a more traditional dress).

Third step: I talked my two best girls into joining me back at that first bridal shop, and I roped them into trying on dresses with me. If you can somehow finagle this, I highly recommend it. We had a blast trying them on together!

Final step: my best girl and I went to David’s Bridal to try on this dress:

ch1

… and this is how I looked in it. (Quick note: the date on my camera was wrong, apparently.)

ch2

As you can see by my face, I wasn’t much into it. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good. Here’s a better picture where I’m not pouting (but it’s not much better!):

ch3

Then I tried this one on:

ch4

ch5

ch6

Ohhhhh, yeah. Now we’re talking. It was glamorous and yet wearable. The boobage was well-supported and it didn’t seem overwhelming on my body. Problem: I just didn’t want to spend $500 on a dress. I know, I know, it’s the only day I’ll get to wear it and all, but from my perspective (and only mine, of course) there were more important things. (And I’m perfectly okay living vicariously through those of you wearing Monique Lhuillier. Really.)

We dropped by one last bridal shop and found this bridesmaid’s dress (which I couldn’t take a picture of myself in because of that strange and totally ridiculous no-pictures policy some shops have don’tevengetmestartedonthat):

ch7

source

… and this bridesmaid’s dress:

ch8

source

Seriously, if you’re looking for a budget wedding gown, you should at least consider bridesmaid’s dresses. Each of these was under $150, and in white or cream, still made me look like a bride.

{Quick trip down memory lane. Granted, it’s my memory lane, but join me anyway… Initially, Mr. Cheese and I were going to get married in October. And, in a wacky attempt to make traveling easier on my family (all in the Southwest), we thought we’d just have a second reception, sort of, in Las Vegas. This was before I figured out what this wedding thing was all about—for me, anyway—and my big goal was to inconvenience people as little as possible. Feel free to point and laugh.}

While I was considering my options, I realized that I wouldn’t have time to get my dress dry cleaned before heading for Vegas. We’d be tromping around our backyard on Saturday and then would hop on a plane Sunday for a renewal of vows on Monday—no time to get a dress dry cleaned. For practical reasons then, I needed two dresses. Also for practical reasons, I didn’t want to spend a ton of money. I’ll talk more about my wedding planning strategy soon, but let’s just say that I could neither afford nor desire a super expensive dress for one day… and now I needed two.

But I still didn’t want to pay 500 bucks for a dress. Enter eBay! Within 10 minutes of searching, I found that exact dress in my size for sale by a bride who’d been married a few months before. Score! I bought it for $200 plus shipping and it arrived a week later in perfect condition.

Because I wanted to go traditional for our hometown reception, I chose the pickups dress (in black above).

Fast forward to today. We’re having one reception in Knoxville, with our backyard and the trail to the clearing and all that. I have two dresses hanging in my closet, one of which I love more than the other… but of course that one’s less practical and safe (ya know, for descending a trail). I’m also feeling like I chose them both during my rush-through-the-process phase, and what I reeeeaaaalllly wanted was lace. I also loved how fun the super sassy bombshell bridesmaid dress (the navy blue picture) was, not to mention how bombshell-ish I looked. And yet, I’ve said all along that I don’t want to place too much importance on my dress.

Help? What would you do? Wear the glamorous-but-somewhat-constricting-when-walking dress from David’s Bridal? Wear the much safer, but much less fun more-traditional-bridesmaid’s-dress-with-pickups? Buy a third (ridiculous, I know) sexy-bombshell-bridesmaid’s-dress and have to suck it in all night? Sell both and start the search anew?

*I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This is a new relationship worthy of the respect and traditions that come with creating a new family through marriage. Don’t let the fact that you were married before intrude on your wedding day. Yes, by all means, process and find peace with that fact for your own emotional health before you get married again, but let your decisions about The Day You Will Pledge Yourself To Your Husband Forever be driven by the present. Wear the dress you would wear if this was your first marriage, this time, at this age, as this person that you are today.

Miss Cheese, I so wish you had been here before I got married. This is my second marriage as well, and it’s very hard to find that perspective (or it was for me). I came to many of the same conclusions as you did, we had the day we were meant to have, and I’m eternally grateful for that.
I’ll be following your journey, I wish you the best.

One of my friends was married in the same David’s dress. She commented that it was easier to walk in than she had expected.

Encore encore!! (applause) for the encore bride! Girl you look incredibly gorgeous in the David’s gown. Just practice walking and sitting gently. You just kinda radiate happy in that gown. And it becomes you. :)

I love them both, and actually thought the lacey db dress looked good too! Hmmm, the first dress will probably be hard to walk in. I actually really like the bridesmaid dress the best!

Wear the dress you LOVE. And don’t wear a dress that would cause you to have to suck it in all night…you’ll just want to hang loose and have fun I’m sure. Or, if you are going to wear 2 dresses, wear your most favorite for the reception and your second favorite for the ceremony maybe?

Miss Cheese, can I just say I love your perspective on life, esp as it pertains to your wedding?

Anyways, you look gorgeous in the glam David’s dress. I think the bombshell bridesmaid dress would also look fantastic on your curves.

I know you said you don’t want to place too much importance on the dress, but taking a page from your book: Everyone will be paying attention to you, not to the dress. Nobody’s going to know the process you went through, or if you choose to buy a 3rd dress, that it’s your 3rd. And honestly, they shouldn’t care. Whichever one makes you feel the way you want to feel on your wedding day should be the dress you pick.

Kinda nebulous, but my .02. You’ll be gorgeous in whatever you choose– can’t wait to see what you choose!

You are so flippin adorable. Wear the David’s Bridal dress (I can’t believe I’m endorsing DB, since they are SO annoying with their emails), but you look sexy, cute, and so happy in it.

Oooh, I love the glamorous dress, you look A-mazing! Buy a 2nd one, that’s short or something like that, and then sell the one you’re not too crazy about! At least that’s what I would do! Again, A-Mazing!!!

Okay you are a Freakin’ HOTTIE in the David’s Bridal dress! PLEASE wear that or sell the dresses and find one in lace that you love.
Can I suggest going tea length if you get a new dress b/c that would make walking around easier :)

The first two David’s dresses are the exact same number one and two picks I had! I ended up with the second…it is a fabulous dress. I’m a little worried about walking in it too, but I’m hoping once they take a foot or so off the bottom (fellow short bride) it will be easier.
And repeating what everyone else said, you look EXCITED to be wearing the David’s dress, and that is the most important thing.

I love love love the DB gown on you!!! I was also worried about how practicle my dress would be but then I realized that the only important thing is how the dress made me feel when I wore it. You should feel special on your special day!

Wear the David’s dress that you love and get a lace bolero to wear on top. I think that would look fabulous. Check out etsy for the bolero.

This will also be my second wedding (his first). I got married at 18 which was ridiculous. It was over a little over a year later. This time I’m doing it right, am much older and am giving my FI the respect and love of making it very special for him. I can’t wait to hear the rest of your journey.

Miss Cheese, you are such a hottie! I love the second Davids Bridal dress on you. And I’m pouting cause when I tried it on it didn’t look that fabulous! I saw wear the DB dress, hell, get the hot groomsmen to carry you on a sofa down to the meadow if necessary. Actaully, you should do this anyway, even if you can walk. ;) Then get a super fun flirty lace short dress (maybe vintage?) for the Vegas reception, totally fun! Now I want two dresses!

I think you look absolutely GORGEOUS in the DB dress. I am with you about not wanting to spend a ton on a dress (shoes are another matter though!) I was considering looking for a white bridesmaid dress, but was afraid stores would be a little mean thinking I was cheap or slighting them. Did you run into this problem?

You do look stunning in the David’s bridal dress, so I really do think that’s the dress that you should wear for your ceremony and hometown reception.

At the same time, I think that the pick-up gown bridesmaid dress is adorable as well!!! Can we see a picture of you in it now that you have it at home? That could be a wonderful dress for your Las Vegas reception and since there’s no train or anything to worry about you could run around the city all night and not have to worry!

I think you look FAB in the 2nd DB dress (can’t believe I’m endorsing them). And think about it this way, you’ll have to practice walking in it, so that means you get to put it on many, many times! And as a few others said, I’d go for something short and sassy for Vegas :) However, I can already tell that because you are such a beautiful person on the inside, anything you wear will make you look equally beautiful.

If you want to add lace you could wear a bolero or shaw of some sort. I think that your shoes are going to influence walking down the path and that if you love the David’s dress more then wear it. You could always change into the simpler one later.

You look so good in the second DB dress! Definitely go for that one.

On a side note: I saw you described yourself as “vertically challenged.” I am too, but I got a new favorite term from my brother in honor of my 2 door car: “Rear passenger friendly.” Apparently he had never been as comfortable sitting in the back seat of a 2 door car as he was when he was sitting behind me, because I had to move my seat so far up!

@beth: Nope! I was very honest and direct, though, and basically started with, “Hi! I’m getting married soon and while I’d like to try on traditional dresses to appease my bff, my preference is to order a bridesmaid’s dress in white or cream. Can you help me with that?” Every single one was incredibly helpful, and at the two local shops, gave me a pat on the back for knowing what I wanted and not beating around the bush. Do it! {Incidentally, it looks like I have a white satin bridesmaid’s dress with pickups for sale in a bridal size 8!}

Miss Cheese, you MUST wear the second David’s Bridal gown. It’s gorgeous, glamorous, super flattering and just flat out stunning on you.

Top it off with a gorgeous, vintage-esque bolero and you will look runway-ready! Etsy seller Bonzie makes very pretty boleros and wraps you might want to check out… http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_list_21&listing_id=15650730

@GG+SB: Thanks! I had a crush on Mrs. Candy Corn, I’ll admit. It sure can be, especially for someone like me who tends to thrive on stress (and not always in a good way). On the other hand, it’s interesting and fun to go through the process of figuring out who I am, who we are as a couple, and what kind of family we’ll be… which, in my opinion, is the whole point of the engagement period.
