It’s All In The Words

October 24th, 2008 @ 5:42 pm by Mrs. Cheese

I’m a bit of a strategist by profession. Our theme is part of the execution of our wedding, but the strategy is much simpler.

Two words: Meaningful and Lasting.

In our life, I’m all about the meaningful, while My Favorite Guy is all about the lasting. I want to be surrounded by objects and items that remind me of special people, occasions, and ideas. He wants to be sure that things will survive and stand up to the rigors of time and life. Our wedding — and more importantly, our marriage — should be both.

Our priorities become more clear when we come back to these words. A wedding dress is for one day, and while wearing it on my wedding day will make it meaningful, it’s not something that can join me in my married life (unless I secretly wear it when Mr. Cheese goes out of town… don’t think I haven’t considered it!). On the other hand, I’ve been pushing Mr. Cheese to buy exactly the suit that he wants because he can wear it for years and I love the idea that he’ll enter our marriage prepared for a formal occasion.

Another situation: we’re hosting our reception at our home, so we can either rent dishes or buy them (more on inexpensive ways to do this later). I’d prefer to buy them, because then we can use them in our married life when we host parties. Assuming we buy something that’s not terribly delicate, they can last us for years. Meaningful and lasting.

One more: remember that I posted about growing my own bouquet? Meaningful — every time I cut flowers for a bouquet, I’ll be reminded of the day Mr. Cheese and I became a family. Lasting — roses and peonies plants, when properly cared for, will live for decades.

It’s obviously not always clear cut, but when I’m stressed and overwhelmed (um, yea, that happens way more often than it should), I find that coming back to these two words helps.

Am I a hopeless nerd? (Don’t answer that.) Did anyone else do this? And if you haven’t, take a moment to think about it. What would your words be/ have been?

Can I just say you’re turning out to be an AWESOME Bee!!!!

I love that you have a vision for the event, that you seem so genuine in your postings, and you’re not afraid to admit that even the best of relationships have their down-sides. Kudos to you for keeping it real!

I agree, I love your posts, too, and can always recognize your personality in your writing! I agree with you about choosing things that will be lasting– like your FI, my guy is getting a good suit he can keep. And we’re trying to use a lot of potted flowers and plants instead of cut ones, so we can care for them for years, and they will always remind us of our wedding day.

I based the centerpieces from our reception on plates, bowls, and glasses that became our everyday set after the wedding. It was a nice day to link our wedding to our life together afterwards.

and we used flowers, sea stones and plant cuttings for decorations that were gathered from the ocean near my in-laws vacation home and my mother’s garden.

from my experience i think your ideas will turn out beautifully. it’s worth it to have that connection.

Yes, loving this idea. Our florist actually surprised me with this one. I had told her how I’d wanted a vintage feel to things, and she asked if I liked milkglass. When I told her I did, she said she’d see what she could do. She didn’t manage to find milkglass vases for the centerpieces, but she did find square (the shape of our invitations, cake, etc) milkglass dishes to place the centerpieces on, and then gave them to us as a present, to use as dessert or salad dishes for years to come. It was pretty awesome. So now we have a set of 8 milkglass dessert plates, and everytime we use them, we’ll think of our wedding. I also encouraged my husband to buy a nice suit that he loved, so when he wears it, we’ll think of that day.

Yes, It is good to be focus and have priorities I suggest this even to the bees that are not in a budget because Wedding Industry is really aggressive and you can end with things you really didn’t want.
By the way, You are now pronounce MY FAVORITE BEE EVER!!!!

On the dishes- A friend of mine got married at her parents house last year and she collected all the dishes and glasses from various thrift shops/ goodwill and yard sales. She was able to find quite a few full sets. The effect was really cute and she ended up giving some of the sets to family members as gifts. This ended up being much more cost effective for them than renting dishes. It was also quite personal since they picked all the dishes out.

@MissCricket: I really like the potted flowers idea. Seems like someone also suggested pots of herbs… I’ll have to find that picture. Wouldn’t it be fun, as a guest, to take home a little pot of basil along with a recipe (or whatever)? Or, I think that asparagus ferns are beautiful and fun. Hmmmmm.

@M: Aw, thank you. I think we all rock, to be honest!

I really tried to focus on never doing something “because it is what is expected of me”. I wish I would have developed a mantra such as this to keep myself in check a little bit better.
