About Face

October 27th, 2008 @ 12:23 pm by Mrs. Caramel

For as long as I can remember, people have told me that I have great skin. Before you start hating me for saying that, let me go on and say that things have recently changed! I’m now living in New York, and I’ve noticed a HUGE change in my skin. Just a couple years ago, I’d get facials just for kicks with my girlfriends during girly sleepovers. Oh, I should have never taken the easier days for granted!

The new climate has drastically changed the texture and skin tone of my face.

It was just the other day when I saw a million new wrinkles on my forehead and thought to myself, “Hmm… maybe I should invest in some nice facial products.” But… HOW?? Where do I even begin? I started investigating by asking a lot of my friends what products they use. I asked friends who had a similar type of skin to me (dry/combination skin), and I also asked my friends who love researching this sort of stuff.

So let’s start from the beginning. As a teen, I went from using bar soap to Cetaphil because I have sensitive skin and I wanted to use something mild and water based. (OK, the bar soap phase was just because I was lazy and didn’t know any better.) However, in college I started using Shiseido for all of my facial needs. I chose this line because it seemed mild and gentle, but I liked that squeaky-clean feeling the cleansing foam gave me after I washed up. It’s also not very expensive and they have different lines for different types of skin. I also liked how their day lotion comes with SPF, but it didn’t have that SPF smell—that was very important to me! I hate smelling like the beach! :)

I, like many other women, had a huge complex about the dark circles under my eyes. I felt like everyone was staring at me and I couldn’t find any cream or cover-up that could hide them. I found that Shisheido’s under eye cream has worked the best so far.

As for finding the golden cure for covering up the ugly circles, Stila’s eye concealer takes the cake!! I’d tried countless concealers and they always made me turn orange, or green, or some other funky color. But I LOVE this concealer. It is even more important to me than—gasp—eyeliner!! Oh, I love thee Stila, for making such a miracle!

Now I’ve picked up a new line altogether, since my skin has started to do scary things in the past couple of weeks. I got lovely new wrinkles, blotches, and an uneven skin tone that hopefully will get taken care of by Korres. I’ve already noticed a huge difference!

I absolutely love this line so far, but if anyone has any other suggestions for me and for other readers—please do share!!  I know I’m supposed to start exfoliating weekly, so I’d love to hear about some good exfoliating brands, too!

I swear by Kiehl’s pineapple scrub. Expensive but a medium sized tub will last you a whole year.

I have a friend who swears by the clinique line. She says if you go in, the salespeople know what they’re talking about and will help you find a line to suit your skin needs. She’s convinced me to go look at it this weekend.

I have to second tenillle’s advice, Clinique is the best. I moved from Illinois to Florida, and noticed a huge change in my skin. Before the wedding, my skin was blotchy, breaking out, and I started to get some wrinkles (gasp!). But, I started using all clinique products, and my skin was drastically different afterwards. I would highly recommend the Turnaround line. The concentrate really refined my wrinkles so that they aren’t even there any more, and evened out my skin tone. The 15-minute facial is a miracle worker! It turned my blotchy, bumpy skin into a smooth, dreamy finish. I cannot recommend Clinique enough!

I use Philosophy for all of my facial needs. Your face feels really clean and the scent is nice and mild. One thing I absolutely swear by is Retin A Micro (by prescription) through a dermatologist. Your skin glows - literally! There is hardly any need for makeup. Retin A takes care of wrinkles and old scars. It also evens your skin tone. They have two strengths - one for winter when skin is usually dry and one for summer (when people tend to sweat). Retin A can dry out the skin, but using a very good moisturizer will more than take care of that problem.

I moved to Arizona, Florida and Maryland within the past year and a half. My skin freaked out at each one, it was like goldielocks. This climate is too dry for my skin, this one is too humid and so on.

It might be surprising, and it even surprised me, but I broke down and tried proactive and it really worked! my breakouts are done, i barely even get single zits.

I just need to get a lightening cream for the dark spots left. Proactive seriously saved my face.

I have to triple vote Clinique…they are the absolute best…no oily or stickiness after you put it on..it just blends into your skin, leaving you feeling nice and soft. I love the moisture surge and the turnaround skin renewer lotions!

I’ve recently begun using a skin care line called BeautiControl & have seen fantastic results. In fact, I enjoyed the products so much that I became a consultant for the company! Not only is their skin care tailored for specific age groups (there’s a 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, sensitive skin, and acne line!), but they also have amazing products for repair AND prevention. Their products are of the same caliber as other brands you’d find a high end stores, only way more affordable. I love them!

If you’re interested, check out the link: http://www.beautipage.com/diannareyes/index.asp

They also have some great spa products that I’m planning on sharing with my bridesmaids. :)

finding a skincare routine is such a pain in the a** to find what line works for you. Because of so many rave reviews I tried all of the following: Clinque, Philosophy, Murad, Aveeno, Oil of Olay, etc…. and they just didnt work long term for “me”
What has worked long term is Mario Bedescu. Natural ingredients, no animal testing and customizable oh, and affordable. plus they load you up on generous samples with each order. i love them!

Interestingly, the exact same thing happened to me when I moved to NYC, and cleared up when I moved away. The best solution I came up with was the facial scrub from Proactiv with alot of moisturizer over that, otherwise I’d dry out really badly. Strange.

You have the best make-up posts! I understand your pain with the east coast weather. I’m a cali girl and spent 8 yrs in the east. For me, it even felt like the water was different…more drying. I used the lancome line of moisturizers, especially around sensitive eye areas. I also continue to use a general moisturizer called A Perfect World moisturizer by Origins. This has been great for my hands, body and even my face! But please get a sample first, bc people have different sensitivities to Origins. I happen to tolerate it, others don’t. You will need a great moisturizer, especially when the snowy weather starts and they crank the heaters.
Best of luck!

It’s amazing how much weather can affect your skin–mine looked the best it ever had when I was in Thailand and the humidity was almost too much to bear!

Love my Cetaphil, tho.

I’ve had similar skin problems and when I was getting a facial the salon recognized a bar of soap to me that changed my life. Nano Cylic http://www.nanocyclic.com/ pink bar love it. It changed my life, my acne is limited and doesn’t scar anymore

Ooh great suggestions Carly! I will definitely check those out.

And for S: Korres comes in different types of lines as most products do. So I used the skin brightening line — the Wild Rose line. There is another line for oily/combination skin, age defying skin, & etc. You may want to ask for samples so you can get a good idea of what works best for you!

I’m in New York too… now that it’s getting cold, buildings will start pumping out dry heat, which totally wrecks my face! I switch to a heavy-duty moisturizer in the winter, Kiehl’s panthenol protein. For evening out skin tone and giving that fresh glow, I LOVE the Philosophy microdelivery peel. It’s expensive but it lasts a long time since you only use it once a week or so.

Ok bees, I’m a Dermatology Physician Asst and I can tell you a thing or 2 about this. First let me say I see more acne problem patients from people using Clinique make-up and worse yet MAC, stay away from those! As for the skin care line from Clinique it’s probably ok, I also like philosophy and sheishido skin care but I have to tell you not any better than plain old Neutrogena! Proactive is mostly all Benzoyl peroxide, not that different than Clean and clear products! All time fav moisturizer is CeraVe CREAM, at CVS, Rite Aide, Walgreens and can go on body and face and doesn’t clog pores! Try it, you’ll be hooked. As for wrinkles, Botox and/or a photofacial is the way to go before your big day.
