About Miss Fondue

We have six little ones that will (hopefully) be gracing the aisle: three flower girls, and three ring bearers. I decided that we would only have one basket for the girls and one pillow for the boys that they could all share, with the oldest of each group carrying it. This decision mainly came about because it doesn’t make sense to have three ring pillows when there are only two rings.

I soon discovered that flower girl baskets are one of the most overpriced things in the world. Sixty dollars…for a basket? Really?

So I picked up a white basket during the after-Easter sales. It was originally $16.99, but I got it for 70% off. It came with a yellow and white lining and ribbon, which, while cute, did not match our color scheme.

The basket before. Say hi to Oscar!

I ripped out the ribbon and the liner. I originally only replaced the ribbon with a black satin ribbon, but after I got the fabric for our table runners, I decided I could use some of the excess fabric on this project as a liner.

Step One: I sat the basket on the fabric and drew a circle around it, about half an inch wider than the basket itself.

Step Two: I cut out the circle. I also cut a length of material that fit around the basket.

Step Three: After bringing the right sides together, I then pinned the long length of fabric to the circle.

Here is the beginning of the pinning.

And done with the circle!

Step Four: I also pinned where the length of fabric met itself.

Step Five: I then sewed the fabric together, following the pins, with about an inch seam allowance.

Step Six: After everything was sewn together, I trimmed close to the seam, and cut slits in the circular part, up to the seam. This helps the fabric to fit inside the basket better.

Step Seven: I then put the liner in the basket, to make sure it fit properly. I went back and forth with the sewing machine on this step, since it was originally a bit big.

Step Eight: Once it fit fairly well, I made some lines with a marker on the fabric all around the basket to mark where the top of the basket was.

Step Nine: I then cut the fabric at this line.

Step Ten: I hate hemming, so I simply folded the fabric at the top and hot glued it to the basket.

And there you have a lined flower girl basket! All the flower petals in the basket will be red to go along with our all-red flowers.

Did you opt for a DIY flower girl basket?

OMG Miss Fondue, I was just combing the hive looking for instructions/sugestions on how to DIY my flower girl basket(s). I have 3 so they’ll each get their own, but there was no way I was buying 3 pre-fab baskets (why are those things so small?). This post is so timely. You rock!

That’s so cute! I love how the lining fabric really ties it in with all of the other decor you have planned.

That looks great! My mom actually made our flower girl baskets (and an extra one for me to keep), which worked out well. I didn’t have to pay a ridiculous price, and it was yet another personal touch to our wedding.

We diy’d the basket too. Mine didn’t even start out white. I had to spray paint it.
The after Easter sales are the best place to shop for flower girl baskets

You did a great job! I’m terrible at sewing the circle-attached-to-a-straight-side… I’m sure there’s a trick, but I don’t know it, so this one would have flummoxed me.

Who is actually paying that much for a flower girl basket? Yours turned out so adorable!
