Shoes for the Beach Boys

October 27th, 2008 @ 4:25 pm by Mrs. Sea Breeze

Picking shoes for a destination wedding is not an easy task.

I had a hard enough time picking my own shoes, but when it came to the boys, I was kerflumuxed. Given what the groomsmen and groom are wearing, what type of footwear would be most appropriate? Shoes? Sandals? And what color??

Well, since Mr. Breezy is wearing a suit and tie, we figured sandals wouldn’t cut it. I know a lot of people equate hot climates with sandals, but I don’t think they’re necessary. Our ceremony is in the evening when it will have cooled down a bit. Not to mention the fact that there is going to be a LOT of dancin’ goin’ on at this wedding, and shoes seem to be a better choice for that.

I gave him some ideas, but in the end, here’s what Mr. Breezy went and picked out all by his lonesome:

Yes, I did indeed almost fall down from shock. He did a pretty good job, no? He’s not the kind of guy to wear a white shoe, but really, with his light grey pants, it was the only way to go.

As for the groomsmen, we bought their entire outfits so they wouldn’t have to worry about them (and also because they were already spending so much money to go down to the Dominican for our wedding), but when it came to shoes, we figured that everyone had their own style and comfort level, so we decided to let them take care of that part.

Of course, given their outfits, not any old shoe would do, so I sent them an email:

Hello sexy men,

Now before you go rolling your eyes or getting scared, please relax because Mr. Breezy has reined in my bridezilla tendencies (mostly) and so there is nothing for you to worry about. No having to go rent suits or get pants fitted or any of that, I’ve done all the shopping for you so you just have to show up. :-)

So, just in case you wanted to see what you guys will be wearing, I’ve attached a photo. It’s a pair of light grey pants with a light purple button-down and a tie.

Just make sure you BRING SHOES. I’d like to gently recommend a pair of light colored shoes… Mr. Breezy got some white loafer-type shoes for himself (after some similar gentle persuasion) but you don’t have to do that if you don’t want. White/tan/grey shoes or sandals would be fine—black or brown shoes would look sort of goofy though, because the pants are such a light grey.

Okay, I’m done terrorizing you. You are now free to email Mr. Breezy and get your joke on (at my expense… but hey, I’m used to it).

xo

Miss Sea Breeze

I hope it works.

This wasn’t too bridezilla of me, was it? Did you let your groomsmen pick their own non-black shoes?

Definitely not! I think the word gets used to much when you’re simply trying to keep everyone informed. You’ve offered suggestions and let them know what they are responsible for–when I was in a bridal party I appreciated having that information! It’s going to look so great all together!

No, this is definitely not overboard. Crazy would have been dictating their underwear choice. :p You’ve supplied literally everything else for them, and you were clear but open on their shoes. Um, but as a note, you might get white athletic shoes. I know that’s how many of my guy friends would interpret your suggestion - but yours may be better dressed! ;)

If any of them do complain that they don’t have light colored shoes or sandals (My DH doesn’t, for example), you could suggest white converse. They are inexpensive, subtle, and what guy doesn’t love converse?

Hilarious. I like the white shoe. Mainly because I am not a fan of feet. Especially exposed feet with pants. I’m sure there’s some childhood trauma involved.

@Miss Hot Cocoa: This made me laugh. What if their toes are terrible? My guy’s feet are never, shall we say, groomed, but at least he’ll trim his toenails before wearing flip flops. Sigh. Men.

Those are some dancin’ shoes if I evah seen some! :P I am a fan of the flip flop…if it’s on the beach. Grey sueded flips could look nice too (as long as they get a man-icure!)

@peachypear: Oh well, if they wear white high tops, they’ll only have themselves to blame. Ha ha, can you imagine?? I do recall seeing some white Sketcher-type shoes which are more running shoe than dress shoe but would work equally well for the guy who has an aversion to the style above. It’s not for everyone.

@verovero: The grey pants were hard to find, they are from Le Chateau (I know, weird, right?) and the shirt and tie is Calvin Klein. I certainly hope no one will be making fun of anyone.

@Miss Cheese: I am so going to try to get Mr Breezy to get a pedicure at the spa. They’re not just for metrosexuals anymore! ;-)

@bellenga: Too true, the flip flop is for sure more beach-friendly. I should have mentioned our ceremony is not on the beach, rather, in the gazebo.

Very nice, and not out of line at all, although I wouldn’t be so quick to discard the choice of brown shoes. If you haven’t, watch Singing in the Rain (I am in love with this movie!!!), especially the “Good Mornin’” sequence. Brown shoes and gray slacks worked very nicely in that movie. All in all, I like the choices for your soon-to-be-hubby’s outfit!

Those shoes look great! Maybe I can convince Mr. Sushi to sport shoes like those…he really wants to sport custom Nike Dunks. Seriously.

I still don’t know what the men will wear, but we’re leaning toward chucks for the shoes. Its just so irreverent and cute! I love those white babies you picked out - perfect with the outfit!

[...] see his style in his “grooms wear”. I suggested that he rock some nice loafers like Mr. Sea Breeze, but he wasn’t having it (I tried). Nope, he went the Nike sneaks route, and who am I to tell him [...]

I really like the outfit you picked out. I think the FI is going to wear a light grey suit himself, so he will stand out against the black suits of the groomsmen. I’m not allowed to know anything else about his outfit tho, since he doesn’t want me to know til the wedding! ;)
