A Few of My Favorite Things…

October 27th, 2008 @ 2:41 pm by Mrs. Sushi

Back to the OOT boxes… the contents!!

I talked earlier about the exterior of our out of town boxes, and now it’s time for the fun stuff… the goodies! The majority of our guests have never been to Hawaii before, so I thought this would be a good way to introduce them to some of my island favorites. Hawaiian Sun (yum!), obviously macadamia nuts (Mauna Loa is actually a Hershey product now), Li Hing Mui covered candies, and island inspired chips, to name a few.

For the few Hawaiian local guests that will be in attendance, I thought maybe we should fill their bags with Pennsylvania treats. Whoopie pies(!), Hershey candies, Swiss Tea Cooler, and Utz chips. The Yuengling beer is there for fun, although it would be great if we could bring some of that to share too. :)

Some other fun goodies I was thinking about adding were water guns, beach balls, water-proof disposable cameras, etc.

We’re also throwing in Oahu maps, Tylenol, and postcards. Since these will be given out at the welcome BBQ, there will be a map and directions to the wedding ceremony included in them as well.

We’re also doing kiddie buckets! We only have a couple of children that will be in attendance, so this will only cost a few dollars per kid. I found sand pails at Michaels for $1 each, great for sand castle making! Don’t forget to check the Michaels and Target dollar bins! I found cute Hello Kitty coloring books for $1 a piece at Target that we plan to use in our kiddie buckets. I also found 24 packs of Crayola crayons for 20 cents a piece. Keep your eye out for sales!

Image source, Target, Crayola (also a PA product!)

We are bringing the PA goodies, boxes, buckets, and such to Hawaii with us. The rest of the goodies (Hawaii snacks) will be bought once we get there.

What local items will your OOT bags have?

I am going to put Boulder Chips, Celestial Seasonings Tea and organic fruit leathers in our welcome bags. I’m trying to think of other local favorites to add for Boulder/Denver…

I am also VERY jealous of whoopie pies! I just tried my first one this summer in Maine. It was a slice of heaven…

We haven’t totally decided what is going in but we are getting travel info from the local tourist board (yeah free) probably a small container of local maple syrup, some cookies, water, a listing of local restaurants and the local pubs, a listign of suggested sites with directions and event info. We will probably also add some little things for the kids.

drool….those oot bags look so awesome!

tiny suggestion - it might also be cool to leave a guide to the deliciousness that is hawaiian cuisine in the oot boxes - ie intro to the mixed plate, spam musubi, poke, loco moco, poi maybe the tourist board has something like that to drop in!

Water pistols are my traditional bridal shower gift. You forget how awesome they are until you’ve got one in your hand.

there’s a place in Manoa Marketplace that sells all these great unique-to-Hawaii snacks! You may want to hit that place up for your goodies for your OOT bags :)

Also… if you go over to Costco, they sell Hawaiian Sun juices AND Aloha Maid juices for a decent price also. If you can afford the time, check out local supermarkets cuz they usually have the best price when the 6pks are on sale :)

The Swap Meet aka Flea Market also has trinkets for rather affordable prices (like puka-shell necklaces!) if you want to hit them on a Wed, Sat, Sun morning beforehand!!

@Vic004: Wish I could find Hawaiian Sun here! The one time I found it, the price was outragous! I’m talking $6.99 for a six pack!
@betting_im_not: I’m actually not a chip person. :oP But I figure most peeps are. :o)
@lisa: Great idea! Mmmm…spam musubi….
@Sarah: water pistols…love them…need I say more?!
@saketini: I’ll have to check out Manoa Marketplace. I already have costco (that’s where we’re getting all our welcome BBQ grubb) and the swap meet on my radar! I LOVE the swap meet. Thanks!
