DIY Folding Photo Screen

October 27th, 2008 @ 2:15 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

I have a terrible addiction: I purchase every bridal magazine that I see. I have been trying my best to cut back, but I couldn’t pass up the fall issue of Martha Stewart Weddings. Filled with ideas of grandeur, the issue was worth every cent of the six dollars I spent. As I flipped through the pages, I saw a DIY folding photo screen. I tore the page out and began working.

I’m no Martha, but I love how mine turned out:

I plan to place the screen behind our guest book/card box table. (Ignore the wrinkles on the bottom. They will be below the table, covered by the linens.)

I’ve put together a tutorial for those of you interested.

Supplies needed:

  • Folding screen (I used one that Mr. Spring Roll had from his college days)
  • Tape measure
  • 9 foam boards (5 mm. thick)
  • Fabric (I purchased 2 yards of ivory upholstery fabric)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • 3 spools of 7 mm. thick ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pearls
  • Photos

Steps:

1. Using a tape measure, measure across and down the screen panels, not including the border. (My panels were each 15”x68”).

2. Place three foam boards together lengthwise. Measure and cut the foam boards to the size of the panels, so that they fit inside the screens’ borders.

3. Tape the boards together. Repeat steps 2 and 3 twice more, so that you have three completed panels.

4. Place the taped panels on top of the fabric and cut around the panels, leaving a couple inches of excess fabric.

5. Fold the fabric up and securely tape the fabric so that each panel is covered.

6. Crisscross the ribbon across the panels, and hot glue the ribbon along the edges.

7. Using a glue gun, glue a pearl at each intersection of ribbon (you could also use tacks, or any small decoration).

8. Insert completed panels into the screen, using a glue gun to secure.

9. Tuck your photos behind the ribbon. (I used photos of Mr. Spring Roll and me as kids.)

Here is my favorite photo of Mr. Spring Roll. He was a butterfly, although he says that he was a moth. :)

Have you been inspired by bridal magazines? If so, how?

I LOVE that you actually put this together. I looked at it, sighed, and flipped the page; I’d love to be as crafty as you are!

This is great idea! We are doing a message line with notecards instead of a guestbook, but I didn’t really have anywhere to string the line in our venue. This is a great alternative way to still have our message cards be part of the decor!
Could be a great way to re-use old closet doors too–if you’re good and crafty!

@Tosha: Here is a link to Target’s website where I’ve found some: http://www.target.com/gp/search/602-5521496-4435824?ie=UTF8&index=target&field-browse=1038576&ref=sr%5Fbx%5F1%5F1&field-keywords=folding%20screen

Those are a bit pricey though. You can do an online search for something less expensive. When searching for one, use the words folding screen or room divider.
