Just Call Me Radioactive Woman

October 28th, 2008 @ 3:21 pm by Mrs. Sea Breeze

And no, that’s not my Halloween costume. Though it could be.

A couple weeks ago I did something to my foot which made me start limping. I didn’t twist it, or fall on it, or wear super high heels or anything… the top of my right foot just started to randomly ache. I mean, the only thing I can think of is the boot camp I did, but the most high-intensity thing we did there was skip rope. Not exactly dangerous.

After a week and a half of hobbling around though, I went to my doctor and got an X-ray. It was inconclusive, so yesterday I went for a bone scan. Basically, they shot me up with a radioactive tracer to detect damage to the bones that the X-ray may not have picked up.

All this is would be mildly exciting at best (though I have to admit, it does afford me some semi-interesting material for my Twitter and Facebook status updates– HA HA! I’m RADIOACTIVE WOMAN!) but really, it wouldn’t be worth mentioning if it weren’t for the fact that…

…we are a mere FIFTEEN DAYS away from leaving for Punta Cana for our wedding!!!

I mean, seriously. Seriously?!? Is this somebody’s idea of a funny joke? ‘Cause it is so NOT FUNNY.

foot

No, this is not my foot, though if I could have taken home a photo, you know I would have. Source

If I have to wear a cast or something, I’m gonna cry. No wait, forget that. I’m gonna refuse it. There is no way I’m wearing a cast on my wedding week or honeymoon, even if it’s a removable cast. But oh… oh!…OH!… what about all the crazy DANCING that is supposed to be happening? *wails* This could soooooo not be happening at a worse time!

Anyone else sustain an injury just weeks or days before their wedding? What happened and how did you cope?

Hopefully they gave you a good iv shot. (I gives good ones btw..but am home sick)

you can contact me if you have any questions about that!

Did they do a triple phase bone scan? That kind can show micro stress fx’s.???

Well Miss SB, my sister wore a cast under her tea-length formal gown (totally showed) when she won Basketball Homecoming Queen back n the day. She was also none the happy, but everybody thought she was so cute.

I’m sure you’ll be fine. But if not, use this wedding as inspiration! She totally rocked the cast!

Miss SB, I had the exact same thing happen (with no previous problems) and it turned out to be a stress fracture… I had to wear a boot cast (removable) for about six weeks. The way I found out was the top muscle extending across my foot started to hurt really bad and didn’t get better after a few weeks. The doctor went in and said ‘oh, does it hurt here?’ and pressed down on one of the bones in my foot. They’re often not detectable on the x-rays, but they’re not the end of the world either. Mine turned out to be the result of an underlying disorder, but I got better after time! (mine happened just by wearing flip-flops and other non-supportive shoes - go figure. Now I’m a sneaker addict.) I’m being way the heck careful with my shoes until the wedding and am hoping it doesn’t happen again so I can wear my pretty shoes on that day.

Here’s hoping that you figure out what’s going on! *hugs*

My mother went to a wedding where the bride tripped on her own train on the way back up the aisle. She had to go to the emergency room before the reception and get a cast. She did make it back to half of her reception, though, and danced all night with her cast and crutches.

Breezy say it ain’t so! Fingers crossed for no cast.

Although, I was in a wedding were one of the bridesmaid had a removable cast. She didn’t wear it for the wedding ceremony, but did put it on to dance.

Miss SB, I’m sorry! My friend fell down and broke her foot two weeks before her wedding and rocked a walking cast on wedding day. She even blinged it out with crystals and then wore a super cute sparkly flip flop one the other foot. Her adrenaline on the day made sure she didn’t feel any pain as she danced and danced! You’ll be fine even if you have to rock a cast. And please remember your health is really the most important part, you could do permanent damage if you are supposed to wearing a cast and you forgo it. No one will even see the cast under that gorgeous dress.

The same thing happened to me and I had to go to my accupuncturist to get it fixed. Good news….no cast needed!

I got two things for ya:

and for decorative cast idea:

Hopefully, neither will apply. But ya gotta admit - those are some cute photos!

Oh no! I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I threw my back out completely three days before my wedding. Even after multiple trips to my chiropracter the days before the wedding, I was still major crippled. The good news is that on the actual day I was so focused on other things that I hardly even noticed how much my back hurt. I sure paid for it the next day, though!

one month to the day before our wedding, I had to have my appendix out in the scariest hospital in Brooklyn. Post-surgery bloat does not make a fun last dress fitting.

My grandfather sliced his thumb off the day before his wedding :) My friend had gall bladder surgery 10 days before. Try not to worry - people have obviously gone through this before and at the end of the day they were still married!

I had the SAME thing happen to me last year - they thought it might be a stress fracture but in fact was Morton’s Neuroma. I did tons of treatments (including painful shots in the foot) but accupuncture worked when the regular doctors didn’t. Good luck - based on my own experience make sure you do lots of research. I had 3 podiatrist and a lot of google time before I got myself fixed up.

@bellenga: Cool! It’ll take a few days to get the results but I’ll let y’all know. The technologist did say there was definitely some bone injury visible but didn’t get specific.

@Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride: Those are great photos!

@alison: Ugh, poor you!

@Dot: Sliced off his thumb! Ok, well that puts things into perspective… :-)

One question…did they inject you while under the camera (detector)? If so, you got a triple phase study performed. And yes, we can tell btw. We just are bound by law (because we’re not an md but are degreed) to diagnose.

I truly hope that you are ok and don’t have to wear a cast! I’m so sorry you even have to think about this so close to your wedding.

But, if you do have to wear a cast, I say you get a purple one, jazz it up with lace, ribbons or silk flowers, and really rock it!

Someone we know broke his jaw the day before the wedding. His mouth was screwed shut for the day of, so the bride had to put his dinner through a blender for him to drink with a straw!! Eww! So much for the first kiss as well….

We’re all rooting for you to get well before your big trip and big day.

ooh, this could be painful, hope you recover soon!

I had something similar happen during the second day of a vacation trip! My right foot was constantly cramped and it was extremely painful for me to walk. I also didn’t do anything to it except for maybe walking w/ wet shoes for a little while after it rained. It took me a week to recover. My mom recently had the same thing and told me that icing seems to help her. Maybe you could give that a try.

haha. mrs. cookie i was at that wedding too! oh wait, I was that bridesmaid :) and it was a stress fracture in my foot! if you get one of the nice big black walking boots you are pretty darn mobile (not super gimpy) and your dress will probably cover it. not ideal, but not too bad. and i certainly danced the night away in mine :)
