Mother Son Dance

October 28th, 2008 @ 2:25 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

Finding the perfect song for Mr. Spring Roll and his mom to dance to has been challenging. We wanted to choose a song that shows our appreciation for all that she has done for both Mr. Spring Roll and I. As well as to show how grateful Mr. Spring Roll is to have her as his mother.

After scouring the internet, I’ve only found a handful of decent songs; two of which are Backstreet Boys and Boyz II Men. Although Mr. Spring Roll doesn’t mind dancing to either song, they just don’t suit him. A more suitable song we found is “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban. To us, the song portrays how much Mr. Spring Roll’s mom has helped us through everything, as well as how much she means to us.

Although “You Raise Me Up” is a beautiful song, I feel that it may be a bit too powerful and serious. On our wedding day, we want the mood to be light and fun. FMIL Spring Roll told me that Mr. Spring Roll used to sing and dance to “Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah” as a child, and suggested that they dance to the song. I love the idea of them dancing to a special song, that is both light-hearted and fun.

How did you decide which song your future husband will dance with his mother to?

I think thats such a great idea! It has special meaning for both of them and the words, ironically, are very suiting. How great that your FMIL thinks of your wedding day as “my oh my what a wonderful day!!”

We used Boyz II Men, it was a great choice. I wanted to use “You Build Me Up” for our group lighting of the unity candle but I wanted a different version and couldn’t find it. I think its more his voice that is a bit to powerful, I love the lyrics.

My hubs and his mom danced to The Dixie Chicks’ “Godspeed”, which was his mom’s request. A great and sweet song– everyone was tearing up!It was the perfect fit for them.

Why not edit the Josh Groban song to cut out the uber-dramatic ending and just keep the beginning/middle? That way Mr. SR won’t have to dance for 5 full minutes and you’ll cut out the more serious part of the song. We did that for our mother/son, father/daughher song (we danced at the same time) because we felt like 3 and 1/2 minutes was more than enough time!
But the zip a dee doo dah is super cute as well!

Simple Man by Lynard Skynard all the way for us. It’s been a tradition in both of our families, believe it or not. It gets me crying every time, definitely not upbeat and fun! Lol.

That’s a cute song. We’re in full-on song selection mode too now so I know how tough it is. Kudos for figuring it out so early!!
