Let’s Rehearse, Then Eat!

October 29th, 2008 @ 5:39 pm by Mrs. Cookie

I woke up the morning of our pig roast (the day after my bachelorette party) feeling really nauseated. I think it was a combination of pre-wedding jitters and that dirty martini I had the night before. Luckily, with the help of saltines and Vitamin Water, my nausea subsided by the afternoon enough for me to scarf down this succulent hog.

Well, scarf might be an slight overstatement. Word of advice: Have your MOH, bridesmaid or a close family member remind you to eat, or do the kind thing and stuff food right down your throat! Seriously! With all the guest greeting, small talk, and general bride-to-be duties, I barely ate. Not to fear, I got a tiny taste of the pig on the day of, and Mr. Cookie’s parents froze some leftovers, which we feasted on post-wedding. Delicious!

However, before we got to the hog and all the fixings we had to take care of some business first: rehearsing the wedding ceremony. For $30, Mr. Cookie and I rented the picnic shelter in a park that we often frequent by our home. To rehearse, we picked a wide open space by the shelter…

… lined up in our positions…

… practiced some of the key moments in the ceremony…

… and went back to the task of eating. Quick. Painless. Easy. Just the way we Cookies like it!

I’ll let you in on a little secret. The dress I wore on the day of the pig roast was the dress I met Mr. Cookie in. I even have a photo to prove it!

Two years later, here we were rehearsing for our own wedding. The dress was a small sentimental reminder of the beginning of our relationship. Le sigh.

OK, back to the pig roast. So, after the rehearsal the eating and drinking commenced. First, off was the pig and all the fixings.

Mr. Cookie swore me to secrecy about the groomsmen’s gifts—no posting on Weddingbee until after the wedding. So, here for the first time are Mr. Cookie and his groomsmen displaying their very own monogrammed flasks with each of their personal choice of libations. Huge hit among the men folk!

Speaking of libations, Mr. Cookie and I, like Mrs. Peacock, hold a special place in our heart for Fat Tire beer. As the New Belgium Brewery is only about an hour away in Fort Collins, we decided to get a keg for our pig roast. Brother Cookie was all too happy to tap the keg for us!

Unfortunately, I don’t have any photos of all our guests at the roast. I swear we had over 50 people there!

Just as Mr. Cookie and I wanted, the pig roast was an opportunity to give our guests the attention they deserved for traveling all that way. Since we haven’t seen some of our guests in a few years, it was wonderful to be able catch up on their lives. Most importantly, the pig roast took the stress off guest greeting the next day at our wedding.

Those in the Denver area, I give the Arapahoe Hog Roasters two enthusiastic thumbs up. The pig, chicken, and BBQ sauces that they supplied were delicious. If you are thinking of holding a pig roast, for any occasion, I highly recommend them.

What did you do for your rehearsal dinner?

Putting glasses on the hog is inhumane as well as hilarious.

I love pig roasts! I attended one while I was in Crete, Greece at a winery and it was a LOT of fun! I’m glad that yours was fun, too! :)

My FI wanted a pig roast for his graduation party when he finished college in 06. This was about 7 months after we started dating, but I was still pretty new to the family and it was the first time meeting the extended fam. Well, I arrived at his house and completely flipped when I saw the pig. It looked like a dead, burned dog, which I just couldn’t handle. I teared up and had to figure out a way to play it off gracefully. Needless to say, I got very drunk. And that is my pig roast story.

Your experience looks like it went MUCH better than mine:)

that’s probably the creepiest picture I’ve ever seen on the front page of weddingbee.

I guess I’m not big into intact animal carcasses wearing shades.

I love that you wore the same dress as the day you met him. I remember exactly what I wore the first day I met my FI and was contemplating incorporating it somehow with our wedding. I wore this purple scarf around my neck and I thought it might be kind of sweet if I incorporated it into my wedding day/night/rehearsal.

call me crazy but I love pig roasts too! We always go to one every fourth of july. It might be totally unlady-like to love meat, but I can’t help it:)

GAH! Is anyone else a bit disturbed? A little C-R-E-E-P-Y..

Sorry I’m just a bit squeamish when it comes to fully cooked things that were once alive. *SHUDDERS*

That roasted pig is the saddest thing I’ve seen in awhile.
EAQ219, It looks like a roasted dog because pigs are just like dogs, but smarter! I’ll never understand how people can be OK with this.

Ladies, you have the right to your opinion, but I get that you are grossed out by our pig. Although, I can understand why you might be disturbed, I think it is slightly more disturbing to say that our roasted pig looks like a roasted dog!

Please when you comment remember that we bees are real people!

What makes a dog better than a pig? Why is it disturbing to think of a roasted dog, but not a roasted pig? Animals are animals, people, and roasting them is sad.

My parents had a roasted hog for their wedding dinner and have one amazing photo of them with it. Us kids always tease them about it because it was this huge pig with a tiny crab apple in its mouth. They said it was delicious, but I’ll never be able to imagine digging into something that looked like that. But props to you for going for it! I say, do what you want, eat what you want, and live life how you want! Who am I to judge?

Judging from the website of Arapahoe Pig Roasters, it appears the sunglasses are something of a (tasteless) trademark.

@Mrs. Cookie:”think it is slightly more disturbing to say that our roasted pig looks like a roasted dog!” I don’t think anyone said that -your- roasted pig looks like a roasted dog, the only comment I saw about roasted dogs was someone who said once when they went to a pig roast -that- pig looked like a dog.

That said, there are people who keep pigs as pets so to them it probably is like how most people(well, Americans at least since it probably varies by culture) would react to seeing a roasted dog.

Could we maybe put it below a cut so it’s not seen on the main page for those who might find it upsetting?

Our rehearsal was the day of, so we just passed around the menu of a great nearby sandwich place before it started, and by the time we finished walking through it, the groom’s uncle had returned with sandwiches. It was just right.

One of my friends had a whole hog roast at the at home reception following a Hawaiian destination wedding. It’s actually a tradition in her family because they have raised pigs for generations. I thought it was fun and Hawaiian themed, although it did look more gross than I expected. I understand that many people don’t eat animals at all (I used to be one of them, in fact), and it makes sense that they would be somewhat disgusted, but for those of you who do eat meat: is this really any more gross than a chicken nugget or a pot roast? All were animals who were raised specifically for the purpose of being consumed. I’m just surprised to see so much negativity for a Bee’s rehearshal dinner choice.
