Gift and Run

October 29th, 2008 @ 11:02 am by Mrs. Green Tea

Anyone else have trouble finding those responsible for mystery gifts? Since we didn’t do a registry and told guests not to feel obligated to send us presents, there were quite a few guests that gave us nothing. This renders the process of elimination useless in mystery gifter identification. We’ve also inquired close family members for leads, but there are just too many variables to nail anyone down.

So someday when I gather enough left over wedding energy to make those thank you cards, we’ll be sending them to each guest. We will thank everyone for sharing our day, but we still want to say specific thank-yous to those who took the effort to gift us presents.

Any suggestions? Or does anyone have ideas on how others can avoid gift-and-runs?

Unfortunately, the only cure I know is prevention - get someone to tape the card to the present on the day itself. Or to write the person’s name on the present. We had someone do this and we only had 1 gift-and-run. I have an idea of who it might be, but it may end up being me thanking them for the wrong gift. Whoops!

Good luck!

I tried to put my mom in charge of figuring out where the one mystery present came from, but I don’t think she is doing a very good job.

At weddings I have been to, the person at the gift table has some labels which they tape onto the gift/card with the name of the gifter as soon as it is given.

Oooo! I *just* had this happen to me today! We had our engagement party about a month ago and we got some stuff off our Oneida registry - with no note. So I called Oneida today and told them what I received and asked if they could tell me who sent it. Apparently nobody had asked this before, because they had to call me back. But eventually they figured it out!

So maybe you could figure out where the spoons came from (were they shipped to you?). All they need is your address and the name of the item, and voila, mystery solved!

I thought I had no advice on this one, until I read Wiglet’s comment….

We had a similar situation with something purchased on the Internet through our “everything” registry rather than through a store-based registry. There was a gift receipt from the store (a normal receipt but without the prices), but no gift message or sender’s name. And, like Wiglet, I just called the store and asked if they could help. They checked their computerized purchase records, and voila!

Not helpful if you don’t know where the gift came from, or if the store doesn’t keep detailed purchase records, but it might help in some situations!
