About Mrs. Martini

Post Wedding Super Duper Chop

October 30th, 2008 @ 5:21 pm by Mrs. Martini

Two of my bridesmaids recently asked me, “Would you mind if I cut my hair?”. I was a little taken aback before responding, “Of course not! Why would I mind? Honestly, the last of my worries is the length of your hair.”

Apparently, and I’ve heard this from multiple people, brides are usually not very enthusiastic about their bridesmaids cutting their hair before the wedding. To be honest, I don’t believe that your girlfriends’ hair has anything to do with how much better or worse your wedding is going to be. I want my girlfriends to look lovely standing there with me, and I could really care less how long their hair is. My MOH eventually got her hair cut in a really cute bob (she’s never had it that short before, and it looks absolutely fabulous) and my BM was pretty close to getting hers cut as well, but then decided to wait until after the wedding. The main reason? She found out that I am going to chop all my hair off right after I say “I do”, and thought it might be fun to go together!

I am SO excited about cutting my hair that I can’t stop thinking about it or talking about it. Sometimes I feel as if I’m more excited about getting rid of it than I am about getting married. Currently, my hair is SUPER long and just so gross. It comes all the way down to my mid to lower back. The last time I had short hair, I brought a picture of Jessica Alba with me and requested her adorable haircut:

Of course, it didn’t look exactly like that and there was no way in hell I would look as hot as she does, but the haircut did look ok on me and some friends admitted that they were nervous about my decision but ended up liking the cut. That was more than a couple of years ago and with the exception of a few slight trims, I haven’t cut it since. I’m dying to get rid of it all!

For years I’ve had this fascination with super short pixie hair, but I was way too scared to get it done. I guess now that I’m getting married, I’m feeling a little fearless and asked Mr. Martini what he thought about me getting a super duper short pixie cut. Surprisingly, he didn’t freak out and instead just said, “Sure, why not? Show me a picture!”

And so I searched for a picture and found THE cut I want.

I know, it’s crazy! and I have absolutely no idea if I can pull this haircut off, or if it will even look good on me, but with the OK from Mr. Martini, what have I got to lose? I wouldn’t keep it this short forever of course, eventually I will grow it out to a tousled bob. But hair is hair, and it will always grow back, right? When people tell me, “only five months left until your wedding!” I just think, “Only five more months until I get to cut my hair!”

Are you looking forward to your post-wedding chop?

That’s really cute - I think with your hair color it will be FIERCE! I wish I could go that short…. it would be so fun!

I’m really anxious to cut my hair too! I thought I was the only one! My hair is the longest it’s been ever! It ends up in a ponytail everyday!

I don’t feel that ‘maids hair matters much, except for that one wedding I was in.

The groom’s sister shaved her hair off. Gone. It was in a fit of “selfish attention seeking” and an effort to anger my friend — who stayed cool as a cucumber through the ordeal.

i know exactly what you are talking about. I want to chop my hair off but i want to donate it. in order to give to locks of love, it has to be 10 inches, which will give me a bob haircut if i do it now, so i’m going to wait. my wedding is still 11 months away! I may end up chopping some of it off 6 months prior… i hope it’s long enough. i really don’t want to have hair down to my butt for my wedding.

The cut is really cute!

Most of my life I had long hair. Not shoulder length long but top of my but long. I got it cut shoulder length and then shorter and finally a super short pixey cut that is very easy to take care of.

I have one suggestion if you are still wobbeling about cutting your hair supershort. Pull your hair back in a pony tail and look at your self in the mirror, or better yet pull out pictures of your self that way. If you like how it looks then your will be fine with a pixie cut.

Just imagine that pulled back look softened a bit. Also, imagine the less headaches from the weight, a drying time cut down to a quick towel dry or a 2 minute blow dry. Styling takes about 2 seconds and you are out the door.

I am among the everpresent group of brides who is growing out her hair for the wedding. Surprisingly it is not because I want an up do. I am doing this strictly so that I have something for may veil to attach to. My hair is very fine but dense and barretes, bobby pins and combs slide right out, especially if the hair is short. (And headnamds don’t work well with drop veils.) At leaset I will be able to create some sort of bun to pin my veil to if I have some length.

I’m really tempted to take the post wedding chop to the extreme and actually make it the post ceremony chop.

i agree - anyone else’s hair, etc. is not part of your wedding power. some people are super crazy about this.

you should check out the hair thing on IVillage. you just upload a picture of yourself and try on hair styles and colors. it’s SO much fun and also useful, it stopped me from getting a cut that would have made my neck look like the incredible hulk.
Warning: It’s incredibly addictive… be prepared to lose lots of time : )

I have short-ish hair, and am trying to decide whether I want to let it grow until the wedding, or just go ahead and get it cut. My fiance doesn’t care. He wouldn’t care if I showed up at the wedding with no hair, or with green hair.

As far as what the other ladies in the wedding do with their hair, I totally agree — it’s not like I want to have Stepford bridesmaids!

My fiance likes my hair long (as he comments every time its been too long since ive had a hair cut), and i love the longer wedding hair looks. I normally keep my hair just shy of my shoulders and now its driving me crazy!! I keep thinking - only 6 months til i can have a million beautiful photos of me with long hair and then I can whack this all off!!

since I’m still 9mo away from the big day and have super long hair that I’m anxiously waiting to chop…I opted for a subtle color change instead. I have a strawberry blonde colored hair (natural of course) and I’m not usually about dye jobs but got up the nerve with my hair stylist and going chestnut on saturday… fingers crossed I don’t come out crying.

I decided to be a short haired bride because I love my hair short, I feel so confident! And completely unintentional, I also noticed that all of my girls have short hair too. Woo!

I’m also going to cut my hair after the wedding and donate it. Pantene has the Beautiful Lengths campaign and they only require the hair to be at least 8 inches long - my fiance donated his hair to them. They also promise the wigs will be given to women with cancer for FREE. I know other organizations don’t actually give it for free so that was important to me, having lost my mom to cancer.

Some organizations will even take hair that’s been colored for wigs so I urge all of you to donate your hair if you’re going to chop it all of anyway.

Ha! I know how you felt! I’ve always had long hair, but for my wedding it was longer than usual. Then I finally got the courage to chop it off between my chin and shoulder. Everyone was in total shock. Heck, I’m still in total shock. It’s great though because I cut off like 15 minutes off of my getting ready time. =D

I have a long time before my wedding and a few weeks ago chopped off about 6 inches, bringing it to shoulder length… I had a pixie cut for years and the grew it out when I met my fiance. I’d seriously love to cut it before the wedding, but like many other brides, love some of the looks for long hair! If you’re really feeling the itch, maybe a couple of inches wouldn’t hurt…

I really loved that haircut but when I decided to go super short I actually wound up getting Katie Holmes’ new pixie cut, which is similar but my stylist thought would work better with my thicker hair. You might want to check it out if you have really thick hair.

@laura: hahaha she does look like Dido! but its Elisha Cuthbert (kim bauer from 24)

@kenziegirl: WOW. i can’t believe that, just to anger your friend. i definitely think your friend won this one for staying calm and collected. the sister is the one who’s going to regret being bald in all the wedding pictures!

@CJ2009: my friend once mentioned donating her hair once and i thought it was an awesome idea and i totally want to do it too! my hair really is SUPER long. it would be such a waste not to donate it.

@notsojenny: wow thanks for the tip! i’m going to check it out today. be prepared for me to come back on here and tell you how much i hate you for not being able to get any work done because of ivillage.
