A Shameless Plea

October 31st, 2008 @ 4:08 pm by Mrs. Cheese

Um, hi. Remember how helpful you were when I couldn’t decide on a dress? And remember how you gave me suggestions on what to do with our garden trail? And there was that time that you came up with a brilliant solution for my name conundrum? See? We’re friends, all y’all (I’ve been told that “all y’all” is the plural form of “y’all”) and I. Good friends. Close friends. The kind of friends that talk about boobs. In fact, I’ve mentioned my boobage no fewer than four times so far, so we’re practically bff’s.

{If you’re sensing I’m buttering you up, you’re totally right.}

Where, in the name of all that is good and perky, do you find bridal underthings that work, in a (oh yea I’m totally going there) DD/ DDD cup? I can barely find regular bras that fit, much less a bustier that’s sexy, like this:

source

It needs to be snug in the mid-section (which is tough because my band size is a 32) and have enough room in the cups.

Help? I can do a ‘net search, but I’d rather hear from you if you’ve found something that works.

Ohhhh…I logged on at just the right time! I’m an expert in this area as I too have been blessed with plenty of boobage (my mama says it is from the Medinas).
http://www.figleaves.com is a great site for finding hearty cup sizes and they can likely accomadate you in the small band/large cup situation. They even have a bridal section. I have a few bras from here that are wonderful. The wedding-day bra was actually purchased from Dillard’s.
Good luck!

As a bigger-busted girl, I had good luck at Frederick’s. I also found a few in larger sizes at Bare Necessities, but Frederick’s wins my vote for sexiness. :)

I feel your pain.

I have a bustier in 32DD by Marie Jo. You can find it at some specialty lingerie stores… You can probably find something that actually fits at a specialty lingerie store.

Good luck! :)

I second Fredricks for sexy! However, for something practical to lift and seperate, NOTHING beats Le Mystere for those of us with narrow band sizes and larger cups (34 DD here). They make you look natural-yet-1940s-pin-up perky.

forget fredericks, go find an old-school bra store that will do a TRUE fitting and selection for you. once you are certain of your size, you can buy from figleaves.com or biggerbras.com or other spots online. 38FF here, 36G in strapless

I third Frederick’s. I buy most of my bras there at their wee tiny store (my apartment is bigger) in the mall near my house. Victoria’s Secret is pretty useless (at least in the store) for anyone above a D cup. I do love their panties. Luckily my fiance doesn’t mind that my bras and underwear never match. :)

Oh, Querida, I feel ya. 34F or G here. I gave up on strapless things when I passed 34DD and had to say sayonara to Vickies. The joke with my mom and fiance was that my DD strapless bra, when held up in the air correctly, could provide a very large tent for a lawn wedding.

I am terrified for the undergarment portion of wedding shopping.

I have (and LOVE) the Hestia Basque by Harlequin, and it is beautiful, comfortable, and super supportive. It’s also price (~$130), but worth it for me. Good luck!

I am also terrified of the undergarment portion of wedding shopping. The dress I’m in love with has criss-crossed straps which means I’d have to get either a strapless or convertible bra (and I’m leaning to the latter for safety’s sake!!!). Most of these bra styles don’t go bigger than DD which is not going to accommodate my 36H’s. :(:(

i got my bustier at victorias. i couldn’t get it at fred’s cuz they have boning in the front and the dressmaker said the boning will show through. mine was 36c and it was $78. but i love it. it’s so supportive and it doesn’t have the “it’s about to fall any min” feeling.

I am going to get a strapless bustier from Flattering Me. I have a low back on my dress with a sweet heart neck. I actually don’t have a big chest so I wanted a little help. They have removable pads for that and the back is very low on the bras They have sizes 32-46 and A-DD.

You crack me up! figleaves.com is great, but I agree with previous posters that it’s best to go to an old school bra shop. There are probably specialty shops (read: independent retailers) in your area that can provide small band/large cup solutions. My mother is a 32DDD and relies on her local shop for underthings, and I feel blessed that I’m only a 32D because it’s not quite so hard to find those. Don’t despair, the right bustier is out there. In the meantime, be greatful to sport impressive cleavage with a small waist!

I second the Le Mystere. I wore http://www.lemystere.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=2355&Category_Code=B&Product_Count=1 32dd (bought new off ebay to save) and it worked quite well and was great for support while being low in the back.

I gave up the search for a bra that would support the girls and not be seen under my dress….. I had cups sewn in, made sure the dress was nice and snug, and used fashion tape to prevent anything from popping out!!!!! :-)

I’m a 36DD and most strapless bras look good for about 3 minutes on me, and then blah. I recently got this for a wedding I was in, and it worked great:
Va Bien Ultra Lift Long line Convertible Bustier Bra– Available on http://www.herroom.com

It actually has boning (invisible) in the cups to help the girls look perky!

My only complaint is that it did ride up and become uncomfortable for a bit. But, once I figured out what was up, and snugged it back down, it stayed there for the most part. Its pretty comfortable, all things considered.

The best website ever is http://www.bravissimo.com
Bravissimo specializes in large cups sizes D+, as a 36H it’s the only place I shop. Plus they also have bra sized swimwear, shirts, dresses & sleepwear all to prevent gaping - the ultimate big shested curse.

I LOVE BRAVISSIMO. They are based out of the UK, and so they can be a bit expensive, but once you check out all the pretties in the catalog, you’ll know why. Check it out! You’ll wonder where it has been all your life, it’s my own personal favorite wish-list catalog everytime it comes in the mail.

Oh, I so know your pain - I’m a 32FF or G, and man, it is really freakin’ hard to find good bras!

For pretty things, I like the Harlequin brand (http://www.barenecessities.com/Bras-Harlequin_catalog_nxs,31,vendor,24759.htm) - they go up to a G cup, they actually shape and support, and they’re really quite lovely and delicate!

For a supportive bustier, I have the Goddess Lace Longline Bra (http://www.barenecessities.com/Goddess_product_GODDESS689_,size,.htm) - it is super tight in the midsection, which I think helps with the support - but it’s so tight it gives me little sausage rolls out the bottom if I don’t leave the last few hooks undone! I like the shape it gives to my breasts though, and while it’s not super comfortable, it’s functional and might be worth a look?

For strapless dresses and tops, I personally prefer to wear a Fantasie Smoothing Strapless Bra (http://www.barenecessities.com/Fantasie-Smoothing-Strapless-Bra_product_FantasieofEngland4530_,search,.htm) with some Spanx or a heavier duty tummy cincher. I thought I could NEVER do strapless, but man, this bra is like an industrial strength boob hoister! Seriously. I’m not a particularly ‘perky’ gal, if you know what I mean, but I sure look like I am in this =) I did find that I wore a cup size down in this bra (in my normal cup size, it looked like my boobs were trying to escape out my armpits!), but it really is worth giving a try if you’re keen on comfort - and a nude, seamless bra and Spanx are pretty good at going incognito under anything but the flimsiest of tops or dresses, score!

Bare Necessities and Figleaves are both really good about returns too, if there isn’t somewhere in your area to go try stuff on.

Best of luck!!

I’m not sure about your area, but Macy’s in Southern CA sells bustiers in a 32DD… and with a relatively low back to fit nicely under backless dresses. The best part is- it actually worked!! I was reluctant to purchase one online cuz I wasn’t sure it would fit properly. After about two months of searching EVERYWHERE, Macy’s saved me!

There are some truly amazing seamstresses that do custom corsets. I make my own (I’m a 36 D to DD) and never have problems with support. I’m not sure what your dress is like, but I’m sure they could accommodate it. It’s pricey, but so worth it. Anyway, if you need some recommendations, let me know.

Oh my goodness - I have the exact same issue. 32dd, 5″1′ with a short torso. I consider it a small miracle every time I find an undergarment that fits correctly. While I would advocate going to your local boutiques for fit, I don’t think you’ll ever come close to the selection online. After looking through everyone else’s comments, I’d have to endorse @akehurstm. I checked out Bravissimo and they have a pretty good selection all around. And eventhough I saw that Hestia Basque on another site, it was about $30 cheaper at Bravissimo. Good luck with whatever you decide on!

omg, I feel your pain! I’m a 32DD and finding honeymoon/wedding lingerie has been a challenge. I strongly endorse barenecessities.com. They allow you to search by bra size and they have the biggest selection of bras in less-common sizes I have found (some practical, many sexy/pretty). It’s the only place I buy bras now, they have flat shipping rates ($5!!) and sales often. They also carry some of the popular bigger-bra brands (Freya, etc) and a large selection of “normal” bra designers that only sell larger sizes on-line (DNKY, Jezebel, etc).

Secondly, I also went to a Nordstroms to find things like satin slips/ babydolls (which never come with support!!), and their seamstress was able to sew bra cups/an actual bra/underwire into my otherwise un-supportive lingerie. (pricier, but maybe worth it for the honeymoon).

I am a 32 G and for everyday bras I almost always gravitate towards Fanatsie. For my off-the-shoulder wedding dress I found a fantastic bustier by Goddess (less than $50) with so much support I was amazed. It was style 689. I ended up going with a size 34F rather than my every day size though.

I seconde Le Mystere….I’m 5′1″ and wear a 32D so I often have trouble finding bras that really fit. For my wedding day I ordered this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2815324?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=keywordsearch&keyword=le+mystere+in+All+Categories&origin=searchresults

It fit perfectly! The straps are removable, too. Good luck!

I have to agree that Nordstroms is one of the better places, aside from local shops, to go for big boob bras. Why?

Because if you still can’t find the size and style you need, you can cry into a beer and cheesecake at the Nordstrom Cafe…. which I’ve done.

Ok, stupid question: what are the chances I can wear a black corset under my white wedding dress? Would you even chance it?

@Jennifer: I sew, but I’ve never tried to make a corset! Is it very difficult? Would you recommend that people who sew attempt it, or is one of those things that I’ll just never be good at in time?

@Miss Cheese:
My first one came out really wonky. I forgot about ease and corsets do not need ease. Then I had to go about finding the right shape. They only take a few hours really to make and once you finish one, your good to go. I would be happy to do a custom piece for you if you are interested. I’m not far from you, south of Atlanta. PM me @ jennifer_marie 922 at yahoo if you want to talk more!!

I’m pretty busty too — 30F — and have started the process of trying stuff on. I bought a Fantasie strapless in nude (which I like and will keep). I tried on the Va Bien basque also and was not impressed with what it did to the girls — the smallest size they had was 34D, which fit my rib cage, but the girls weren’t looking so supported. So for me the hunt continues — I love Bravissimo, though, and my every day underwear are the molded Fantasie’s — I have a few mystere’s that I like also. Maybe I’ll check out some of the local shops in NYC — I know there are a ton of good ones.

I wear a 30D or 30DD, so I hear ya! But no worries!!

I wore a bustier by Felina (that I got at Nordstroms for $50) that fit like a glove. I believe it was a 32D, but it was perfect. I highly recommend both Nordstroms lingerie section and the bra. I’ve had luck getting Nordstrom’s to find bras in my size and even special order if necessary, and their staff is so knowledgeable.

Another great resource for “hard to find” sizes is http://www.barenecessities.com.
