About Mrs. Cheese

Short and Sassy

October 31st, 2008 @ 11:01 am by Mrs. Cheese

… I’m talking about hair, but I suppose you can describe me that way too. :)

My hair, if you recall (if you don’t, mouse over my chees-y icon and you’ll see a pic of me) is short. In fact, it’s much shorter than it appears in that picture because it’s a graduated cut so the front is much longer than the back.

I love having short hair. I’m not terribly tall (ahem, *cough* five foot nothing, to be exact) and I have a ton of hair. Seriously. A ton. Every hair stylist I’ve ever been to has remarked on how much hair I have. Lest you be creating voodoo dolls to wish me harm for what probably seems like a good problem to have, let me just say that most of my pre-short-hair pictures make me look like this:

Mr. Cheese, unlike Mr. Eggplant, is a huge fan of long hair, and more than once has suggested that I grow it out just so that he can see what it looks like. Setting aside the fact that this isn’t at all like, “Try on that dress so that I can see it” because of minor things like time and daily aggravation, I’m not sure I WANT long hair on my wedding day simply because it’s my wedding day. I want to look like me — only significantly more fabulous — and “me” has short and sassy hair.

Par for the course, I’m conflicted. I like my hair short and think that it fits me. On the other hand, I love my guy, and it would be fun to grow it out, even just a bit, so that the mister would get his wish. Yea, yea, first-world problem, I know.

Supposing I’m keeping it short (even if I grow it out, it’ll be short), it’s so hard to find inspiration photos! This post is for my short-haired sistas out there.

I *love* this bride’s hair. While I obviously don’t have the length in the back, I think I could simulate the front waviness and general fabulousness.

Then there’s the always-gorgeous Mariska Hargitay. Her hairstyle here is much like my original plan: stick a flower in it and make it poofy.

 source

She used that same strategy for her own wedding:

 source

I’d call this one a faux-updo, while the poofiness in the front is much like the first picture.

source

I’m not sure I like the hairpiece, but I like the idea, and this is closer to my regular everyday hairstyle.

source

This bride is sassy looking, eh? I’m not sure I like this as much as the others, but maybe another short-haired bride will find some inspiration?

source

While I don’t think Ivana Bozilovic has short hair, I could mimic the style by pulling my hair back with a few pins and… yep, sticking a flower in it!

source

And, from my consistent source of fabulousness inspiration, Twigs & Honey:

source

source

The best part about the net-and-flowers hair pieces is that, if I can somehow get a little bit of Mrs. Pineapple’s DIY pixie dust, I think I can make it myself.

And, of course, we can’t have a short hair inspiration post without our very own Mrs. Gingerbread:

I’ll have to try some of these out and post embarrassing pics so that y’all can weigh in! Stay tuned…

And now, it’s your turn. Are you keeping your hair short for your wedding or growing it out? Did your fiance factor into your decision? If short, do you have inspiration pictures you can contribute to this post?

{Before you ask, no, I don’t know what I’m going to do about a veil, but don’t worry, you’ll see a post on that soon, if for no other reason than that I think I read that a blusher veil is the “prerogative of a first-time bride.” You KNOW I’ll have an opinion on the whole thing.}

OH you have NO IDEA how excited I am to see this post!!! I’m in the ‘exact’ same situation as you - 4′11” with extremely thick hair. Every time I’ve tried to grow it out I end up looking like a monster and then going back to my normal bob, so it’s going to stay that way for my May 2009 wedding because I want to look like me. I just don’t think it’s worth it to try and grow it out because for the seven months I spend growing it to have it longer for ONE day, it will be painful! Plus there are lots of shower and bachelorette party pictures that will be taken and I don’t want my hair to look gross in those :) There was an excellent message board post a couple of months ago where people posted different links for short-hair-bride inspiration…

Just like Lilhawkeye2, I was excited to see this post. I LOVE my short hair, and since getting engaged I have done the requisite “grow your hair for the wedding” thing…and I HATE IT!!! I do want to look like “me”…and the “me” now, hasn’t looked like this since highschool. So I think it’s off the salon for me! And by salon, I mean my mom who has cut my hair for me since I was a kid…saving me a few hundred dollars! Although she may not honor my “appointment”, since she is pro-longhair for the wedding!

Oh.My.God. Just yesterday I Google Image searched “short curly hair updo” because I have, um, short curly hair. I, too, am thinking about whether I should keep it short or grow it out (FI actually loves short hair. Shock.) I found a site with pictures of Hayden Panattiere’s short hair updo (the pics are from 3 angles.) It would require a little bit of length, but it’s so cute!

Also, I LOVE Mariska Hargitay’s hair. Yay for shorties!!

I am so sad to hear about people agonizing over how to wear your hair for the wedding. Why would you grow your hair just for a wedding? Is it any different than looking back on old pictures of yourself and seeing different hairstyles through the years? Why this particular length if you hate it?

In other words, be YOU! I have long hair, to my waist. I can’t imagine myself having hair much shorter than about mid back and I don’t like it longer than it is now. I did have it mostly up for the wedding, but I wear my hair in many different styles on a regular basis. All you need to do is make sure you feel great! Don’t let it be a pain to you beforehand.

I think that you should have your hair the way you want it for the wedding. Maybe grow it out after, think how odd it will be to look back at pics if you never keep your hair long. I think that the short hair looks cute on you, I wish I could pull off short hair but alas short and curly is hard to master, but I digress. Your hair along with everything else, dress, jewelry, etc should represent you and not some “perfected” version of you.

I also love short hair but I currently have long(ish) hair and have been contemplating cutting it. I love the Mariska Hargitay pics and the one with the headband. This may be just what I need to join the ranks of the short and sassy club!

I had short hair, but am growing it out becase 1. Fiance likes it long and 2. I’m getting married in August so my choices are updo or frizzy mess.

Id say every week I daydream anotu cutting it short again. I also have a birdcage veil, which looks best with either an updo or short hair. But I’ve never really had long hair before, so this should be interesting!

Good luck!

I was growing my hair long for my wedding this coming May, but I’ve actually been growing it out for much longer than I’ve been engaged.

Last night I just got sick of it and chopped it all off (about 12″!). I love it, but everyone is all like, “oh you’re going to be sorry come your wedding when you want long hair.” I tried my dress on post-haircut and I still think it looks beautiful. I don’t regret it at all. Now I don’t have to spend a zillion dollars at a salon getting something done, I think I’ll be able to manage it myself.

Okay, so this whole “stick a flower in it” thing is much harder than I thought it would be! I’m sticking a rose in my hair for my Halloween costume, and I can’t get the thing to stay. I’ll definitely be practicing and posting the results here.

I’ve been having a hard time with short hair too. I love it and don’t want to change it, but it’s a straight bob (and I pretty much want to keep it that way) and I just don’t know what to do with it. Especially since I have a fingertip length veil, and don’t really want to do a flower.

I’m definitely keeping my hair short, I just got it re-cut after a WAY overdo hair cut and I like it SO MUCH BETTER short. Stick a poofy veil on top and I’m done :)

@Sara: I didn’t think of it as agonizing, more like choosing from a couple of options. I’ve spent about a decade on the leave-it-short/ grow-it-out fence (which for me is a different of like 5 inches, max!)… just seemed like maybe a fun time to actually go the other way. I think, though, that because the difference is so small, I’m really the only person that’ll notice what I choose. :)@jennred782: True, true.
@AliCherri1: Um, still waiting on pictures!!! (hint, hint)

Ooh, I loved this. I had been growing my hair out for months since getting engaged (I went from pixie-length to chin within a few months). I wanted to grow my hair out because I thought I’d look back on my wedding photos and think “what sort of stage was I in with that cut??”

But I just chopped all my hair off, a la audrey hepburn/natalie portman and it is the biggest relief. I’m giving up the “long hair” dream and going for something that actually fits my personality and lifestyle. Shucks to the updo! and good luck finding a length that works for you :)
