Tuxedo Troubles

October 31st, 2008 @ 11:27 am by Mrs. Spring Roll

First and foremost, hap-BEE Halloween!

And now for a topic that really scares me: choosing tuxes for Mr. Spring Roll and his groomsmen. Mr. Spring Roll and I know zilch about tuxes; in fact, I don’t think he’s ever worn one. If it were up to him, he would wear a tuxedo shirt.

Mr. Spring Roll at his college graduation.

We’ve made the first step via setting up an appointment at Men’s Wearhouse. The appointment is only a few weeks away and we still haven’t a clue as to what they should wear. I dared to look at the website, which resulted in more confusion than before. I had no idea there were sixteen styles of tuxedos, and I still don’t understand what a lapel is. Unfortunately, style and terminology are not the only things confusing me. Color, types of ties, and shoes are just as mind boggling.

Any advice? How did you choose the tuxes for your wedding?

Lapels are the folded flaps on the front of a suit or tuxedo. If the lapels are satin, it’s a tuxedo.

Don’t worry. At a rental place, they’ll walk you through the choices step by step.

hmm based on your comments about how lost you guys are figuring out Tuxes I would say you might want to try another Tux place before you go to Men’s warehouse since they dont have samples to try on (at the least the ones by me dont) so it could be really hard to figure out what you like without seeing him in it first.

Mr. Taffy has been doing this on his own, but I found a website that he had bookmarked that is really comprehensive:

http://www.blacktieguide.com/

Mr. T bought a tux the weekend after we got engaged! We had to go to a black tie party for work, so we figured he could get something right away and use it for both events.

Love the pooch costumes!!! :)

Just have him try things on and you’ll figure out what looks best on him! That’s what we did!

I’m with you - I’m totally tuxedo-challenged. We went to men’s wearhouse, and it wasn’t that hard once we figured out a few things. We didn’t want tails - it’s a daytime wedding - so then the biggest thing was to choose between one-button, two-button, and three-button. The main difference is how much of the vest will be showing (if you’re going with vests). We ended up going with the two button style (I think) and then just picked what kind of lapel we wanted. They’ll have pictures of the two types (notch or shawl) Notch lapels look more like suits - that’s the one we chose.
I would suggest you bring swatches of your bridesmaids dress if you have them. . . it makes it a lot easier to pick out colors for the groomsmen’s ties and vests. They have swatches of those for you to look at, and if you don’t have the bridesmaids dresses picked out already, I believe you can make changes until just a few weeks before the wedding.
Then they’ll have you pick out pocket squares, cufflinks, shoes, shirts, etc. but it’s not as hard as it seems once you get in there and see the options.
We had to put down a $40 deposit (which will be applied to the cost of FI’s tux) for the wedding party. They “opened a ticket” on our wedding party with everyone’s names, the style tux each guy would be wearing, color of vest & tie, cufflinks, shoes, everything.
If you sign up for their email list, you get some money off the price of your tux & a coupon. We used the coupon that day to buy the pocket squares for each of the groomsmen & the groom.
Mens Wearhouse also has a program where if you rent four tuxes, the groom’s is free. We opted to give our free rental to our ringbearer for a couple of reasons. . . I think it’s outrageous that a tux for a 2 1/2 year old is the same price as one for a grown man. Also, his mom is one of my bridesmaids, so it cuts her some slack since she’s already paying for a dress.
This it kinda off subject, but if anyone is looking for a child’s tux, there are services that offer rentals for around $30. I think one of the Bees did a post about it.

Thanks Loralie, that’s all really helpful for another tux-clueless bride here!

@Pengwen: “If the lapels are satin, it’s a tuxedo.”
Not all tuxedos have satin lapels, grosgrain is another traditional lapel facing.

I second Miss Taffy’s suggestion of blacktieguide.com as a comprehensive site that explains various tuxedo options.

There’s also peaked lapels, peaked and shawl are both more traditional than notched. The site Miss Taffy mentioned, http://www.blacktieguide.com, has pictures of all three lapel types.
