Make It Work: Flowers on a Budget

November 3rd, 2008 @ 2:06 pm by Mrs. Espresso

The Thursday before our wedding, my mom and aunt made the trek to the LA Flower District to buy all the flowers for the wedding. I would have loved to have gone with them, but with a new job and little vacation time, the excursion just wasn’t an option. Because I didn’t have a preference as to the types of flowers we’d use for the wedding, I simply told them I wanted a variety of green and white flowers. I wanted the centerpieces to look as though we’d just picked them out of a field. For brides who are more specific with the types of flowers they want, I would suggest making the trip. But my mom and aunt did a fantastic job and I couldn’t have asked for a better selection.

Here’s what they got for $200!

Flowers for:

  • 11 boutonnieres
  • 8 bouquets
  • Petals for flower girl basket
  • 70 centerpieces!
  • And a few various other arrangements

Have a look for yourself. :)

These green hydrangeas were used for the bridesmaids’ bouquets:

The LA Flower District hours for the public are:

  • Mon, Wed, Fri: 8AM - 12PM ($2 admission)
  • Tues & Thur: 6AM - 12PM ($2 admission)
  • Saturday: 6AM - 12PM ($1 admission)

Purchasing and putting together the floral arrangements was definitely a lot of hard work. But by taking this route, we were able to work them into our budget.

How did you make a wedding item budget friendly?

I am doing the same thing! LA Flower District at 8am the day before the wedding and make all the centerpieces that day, then bouquets the morning of the wedding. SOOO much cheaper, and not at all that difficult. As long as you stick with just one color and only a few different flower types, it is not biggie!

Lovely! What are the bright green ones called? The one under the caption “I love these”. I had them in my bouquet and I have no idea what they are.

That’s awesome!!! We have thought about doing our own centerpieces, but I think I’m too nervous about fridge space and help to get it together.

is the last picture of all the flowers together? I’m curious about the visual quantity of 200$ worth of flowers (trying to figure out my own DIY flower budget).

For those who don’t have a flower market near by (that’s me), a great online resource is freshroses.com. They’re amazing!

Can we please see the pics!!! Lovely. I did the flowers for a friends bridal shower by ordering through Sam’s Club. Cheap but not even this cheap! Gorgeous.

I am in love with making the bouquets! I can’t wait to see how yours turned out. I live in OC and can’t wait to make my may down to LA to see if I can find inspiration for mine. Way to go on being budget-friendly!

70 centerpieces?! Please tell me that’s a typo!

But, great budget tips. I’m totally doing my own flowers.

That is such a great idea! Will you post pictures and the DIY part of it? The flower choices are beautiful! Can’t wait to see them in the recap!
