About Mrs. Shortcake

In the Library, With the Candlesticks

November 4th, 2008 @ 2:33 pm by Mrs. Shortcake

My mother was always (and still is) afraid of candles. Whether that fear was because of the possibility of a fire, or because of an unfounded belief that the ceilings might get mussy, I still don’t know. She has passed on that fear to only one of us, the middle Sister Shortcake. Youngest Sister Shortcake has always been one match short of being a pyromaniac, and I seem to be following in her sooty footsteps. I love candles. Love, love, love, love them. At any given time, there seems to be at least a dozen lit in the haus, and for special events I bring them all out, so much so that Mr. Shortcake’s grandpa declared me a ’candle freak’ at a family dinner. Guilty as charged! Lately, I’ve been coveting tapers. I would have placed five or six tapers at every table at our wedding reception, but our floral event designer kindly pointed out that they would promptly extinguish in the drafty Marquis tent! Wedding now past, I’m lusting over candlestick holders such as:

This gorgeous “rue st. honore” white set from Rosanna, Inc:

Rue-St.-Honore-L

and these classic footed beauties: “dauphine

and I’ve even been scouring eBay for some vintage treasures, like these antique silver ones:

and this hobnail pair which reminds me of the white hobnail lamp that used to sit on my bedside table as a young girl. I’ve always had very active hands, so as I read on my comforter, I used to rake my fingers across the smooth knobbly surface. I love textures - a good piece of velvet, or a creamy curve of glass gets me every time. :)

Speaking of glass, I am of the fixed mind that green glass is the prettiest colour in existence.

Witness these Tiffin vaseline glass candlesticks:

this gorgeous hand-painted fenton pair (is it just me, or do they totally look edible? Yum!)

and these sweet and simple Jadite holders which I cannot seem to upload, but can be seen here.

As we are wont to say in this haus, “bluv.” I bluv them. Bluv meaning “big love,” and them meaning, “candlesticks the world over especially green bumpy ones.”

Oooo… I bluv these, too! I already have 17 clear candlesticks and 10 colored glass candlesticks in marigold, amethyst, and shades of green (My teal ones are my favorite!). I am lusting after a rose colored glass cakestand with a glass bell for my cake, too. I am adding my collections to the green and pink Depression glass pieces that our grandmothers have collected for centerpieces (taper candlesticks) and buffets (candy dishes, etc). I totally bidded on the Tiffin vaseline glass! :)

You wouldn’t believe the awesome candle holders we got at Pier One. They look all heavy and fancy…like real silver, but they’re totally plastic! HAHAAAA.

Ohhh, you went and did it. I thought I had gotten over my crush on those Rosanna candlesticks (and everything else they make, for that matter), but you’ve reignited (HA! No pun intended… ;) ) the infatuation. Oh dear.

Must…not…purchase… :)

I have the same problems with tapers. Something always extinguishes them — the air conditioner or the heater, the draft from someone walking by, one of my cats’ tails waving next to them.

They look so beautiful, though, don’t they?
