About Mrs. Deviled Egg

Our Proposal

November 4th, 2008 @ 8:28 am by Mrs. Deviled Egg

I already showed you the rings, so I thought you might be curious to learn how we got engaged.

The proposal kind of came as a surprise to me. On Christmas Eve, my parents were hosting family for an evening get-together, so I spent the day helping my mom with preparations and ran around town in the name of Christmas shopping procrastination. Mr. Deviled Egg’s family was having their Christmas Eve dinner together at their house and, since I had plans to visit him on Christmas Day and stay for dinner, I figured we wouldn’t see each other that night. He called me around 8:00 PM and said he was going to come up and visit. Even though I told him that he shouldn’t think it was necessary to make the 45-mile drive, he decided to come up anyway.

He arrived carrying a wrapped present. I asked him what it was and he told me he wanted to give a gift to me before Christmas, but it could wait until later. I felt really bad because I hadn’t even wrapped any of the Christmas gifts I purchased for him. Who am I kidding? I hadn’t wrapped any presents yet and still had a few more to buy.

It was getting to be around 11:00 PM and I asked Mr. DE about the present (yes, I was getting impatient).

He said he wanted to give it to me someplace where it was a little more private, so we headed upstairs. I was clueless that this was leading up to the moment because the shape of the present didn’t evoke suspicion. It was about a foot square and 1 inch thick.

I pulled off the wrapping paper to reveal a scrapbook with a picture of us on the cover. I opened it up and on the first page, there was a typed out Merry Christmas message from Mr. DE. I thought it was really sweet. He gave me a look that made me turn to the next page. There, he wrote some more sweet, personal things and I started to get suspicious. I quickly skimmed the words.

“…Commitment…”

“…Family…”

“…Our future…”

Then, I turned the page again to see these words staring back at me:

“…WILL YOU MARRY ME? ;-)”

I looked at him and he was kneeling with a ring in his hand. Of course I said, “Yes!” It was probably the best natural high I’ve ever experienced. I guess I always thought I would cry during the proposal, but these blue eyes couldn’t muster a single tear. I had a huge smile plastered across my face.

And the ring? The ring was perfect! And he picked it out himself. I don’t think I would have chosen anything different if I picked it out myself. I never gave him hints at styles I liked and he never asked. Like I said, it was all a little bit of a surprise.

After a couple of minutes, it popped in my head to ask if my parents knew. Sneaky Mr. DE said he talked to my dad earlier and got his blessing. I thought that was so sweet!

I couldn’t get over how thoughtful the proposal was. How he took the time to personalize it to one of my hobbies and how he wrote such sincere words inside the scrapbook. (For the record, I went back and read it again after I settled down a little bit. It was such a blur the first time when I just skimmed it.)

I’m pretty sure that natural high lasted for at least the next 5 days. And of course, the tears finally did come when I called and talked to friends and family the next few days to share the news.

Did you cry during the proposal or did your eyes stay dry?

I didn’t cry, I *laughed.* A lot. Really hard. I was just that happy! It really freaked FI out — he said, “Stop laughing!!” but I couldn’t. I was overwhelmed.

@amysue: I laughed some, too! I laughed because I was just that freaking happy. And then I laughed because I thought it was funny how I couldn’t cry.

I bawled. As in snot and tears and running mascara. I don’t think the words were even completely out of his mouth yet and I was already gasping for breath. Not that I wasn’t happy! :) I was ecstatic! But I’m a bit of an emotional sap and I was definitely caught off guard. I wish I would’ve been all smiles so the pictures wouldn’t have looked like my face was melting off!

I didn’t really cry, I actually didn’t even answer him at first, just kissed him. Than I realized I didn’t answer, so I pulled back and told him yes. We then sat in the chairs for a good 10 minutes. He actually teared up before I did. It was in those ten minutes when I teared up a little and a few happy tears slid down my cheeks. I really thought I would have cried though, since reading other people’s stories almost makes me cry. :)

@JCook: Other people’s proposal stories always make me cry, too!

But I didn’t cry. My voice just got about five octaves higher than usual and my knees gave out. And I started sweating profusely. Glaaaamorous. Given that he had set up a video camera, I sort of wish that I’d been a little more composed, but oh well.

I cried a couple of minutes later when he told me about asking my dad.

@alli: Great present, yes! But it really kind of made our Christmas gift exchange a non-event for me. How could either of us top the engagement? Off the top of my head, I really can’t remember what he got me for Christmas last year. I don’t even remember what all I bought him.

I love proposals that include keepsakes like that scrapbook. It’s so cute that he took something you love to do and interpreted it for the proposal.

I definitely cried, there are pictures to prove it. Our proposal was a total surprise to me too! Actually at first I was like “OMG” and THEN I cried.

I cried, and laughed, and then hyperventilated because my dress was too tight and I couldn’t breath in all the way, and then almost fainted. And then I was too excited so instead of “yes” i said “put it on my finger” because the ring was still in the box.

I misted up a little I think he cried at the moment , but about half an hour after I started bawling. When he asked me what was wrong and I told him I wanted to call my sister (who lives half way across the world).

I didn’t cry, which we totally thought I would. He had a tear slip out though and definitely got choked up. So adorable.

I didn’t cry, I laughed at him. *short version of the story* He proposed with one of those plastic diamond rings out of a quarter machine! I didn’t believe that he was being serious and even said that! When he said he was being serious, I just laughed harder and said yes….my poor fiance then said, “That wasn’t exactly the reaction I was looking for.” But a week later we went and picked out my ring together and we couldn’t be happier! I should’ve known he was being serious since he’d actually been telling me for the previous year that was how he was going to do it!

Sweet! Are you a scrapbooker? I love people who scrapbook! I tried once, but I have not a single ounce of creativity in me, so it looked ridiculous. Great story!

i said, shut the fuck up!
we were both hung over from a long night at a concert and eating tacos and drinking stellas on “our” cliff overlooking the pacific ocean.
I had no idea he had planned a proposal for months, so I was shocked and had such a lovely vulgar but very “me” response.
I will forever treasure that moment and have fun telling the story, because it was exactly opposite of mushy, which I cannot stand!

That is an area of contention with us - I insist I was NOT getting teary-eyed - he kept offering me his napkin (he proposed in a semi-private room at a restaurant). Truth be told, he was probably right - but I’ll never admit it!

Aww that is so sweet! My FI and I were on a cruise in the Caribbean, I had just gotten out of the shower and walked out fo the bathroom and he was sitting on the bed smiling at me. He told me to come over there and sit with him, so I sat on him (he had clothes on, I had just a towel) and he just kinda looked at me and pulled out the ring box from nowhere and asked me! I cried for like 5 minutes straight and then he finally said “are you going to answer me?” of course I said yes! He said later that he wanted to do it at one of the formal dinners but he was too nervous. I always make fun of him for thinking I would have said no, like I could ever say no to him ;)
