Don’t Sweat It…

November 4th, 2008 @ 6:18 pm by Mrs. Champagne

deodorant

We’ve all seen the commercial for Sure deodorant where the bride is the only one not worried about the possibility of embarrassing sweat marks… don’t we all wish that was the case?! I know I do. I don’t think I sweat any more than the average gal, but who knows what’s possible on a day where many people will be looking at…um…well…me. I’m pretty sure the usual sweat rules go out the window on your wedding day, so I’m getting prepared to battle.

I once read that the average person sweats almost 4 cups a day and has the capability of sweating 40! Yeah, that’s no typo… we’re capable of 40 cups a day!!

water bottle

Excessive sweating hyperhydrosis is one thing I know I don’t want to think about on the big day. I’ve used a few products in the past, and I’ve found some pretty effective remedies. There are some prescription pills, Botox injections, surgical remedies, and even hypnotic therapy! Drysol is a prescription method, but there are other over the counter ways to beat the sweat. According to my dermatologist, the easiest thing to add to daily life is just to drink more water. Tried it- didn’t help much.

There are also two issues to deal with… obviously no bride wants her wedding dress to be drenched, but I’m also sure there isn’t a bride who wants to stink! After some trial and error with over the counter remedies, I’ve found a way to deal with both unwanted elements. I’ll try not to sound like a commercial, but I swear this stuff works. For everyday activities, Mitchum gel has really worked for me and they even make a woman’s formula that surprisingly doesn’t smell like a dude’s deodorant.

mitchum gel

For the special occasions and really hot summers, there are two things that have worked well for me: CertainDri and Maxim solution. Both are applied before bed time and kind of itch after you apply it.

certain dri

Another thing I should warn about: do not shave before applying certaindri unless you’re ready for the fire within to be released. It hurts. The day after applying it, I’ve found that a light layer of baby powder helps any itching.

Anyone else have this issue? It sometimes seems like nothing helps, but new products are always worth a try, right?!

Haha I use certain dri every other day, and have been since puberty. I’ve built up a resistance to the burn, but man, every once in a while, the fire burns and it burns strong. OUCH!

Good to know about these other options!

I am super sweaty! I use certain dri every other day during the summer. And it really works for me. I swear by it!

I’ve found that most deodorant/antiperspirants have aluminum zirconium as the active ingredient. I tried many different brands, which all have essentially the same formula. Then I realized that what works for me are the formulas with alumnium chlorohydrate as the active ingredient. Suave, Ladies Choice, and Tussy, all meet the criteria. Conveniently, all of these brands are usually around $1 per stick. I hate to think of the money I wasted on other brands (secret, mitchum, etc.) to figure this out. Maybe someone else can benefit ;-)

Girl, I swear by kiehls highly effective anti-perspirant. Its a cream that melts into your skin, so no white streaks! Its also odorless, so there’s none of that tricky body-odor tainted with baby powder that competes with your perfume once things start heating up. Just no smell, period. I luuuuuurve it!

I use CertainDri and have noticed that you can only do one swipe with the bedtime stuff. Any more and you’ll be hurting! For the daytime, I use the deoderant stick, not the rollon. Huge difference!

I used CertainDri for about two months and actually stopped using it because it completely stopped the sweating! I had a bad rash for a few weeks when I started, but kept at it. Now I haven’t used it in about two years (!) and haven’t had any problems with excessive underarm sweating (whereas I used to sweat through shirts in about five minutes). I’d try sticking with the Certain Dri for a few months, grin and bear the itch at night, and see if it helps! It’s the only thing that worked for me (and Mitchum used to be the only d.o. that I would use, period.)

Good luck!

OK, I am so taking all this advice but does anyone have any for the back. I swear my back is what sweats not my arm pits. I almost wish there was something for that. I am a June bride so I am thinking I need to start testing this stuff out now.

I use Secret Clinical and it works like a charm. It’s definitely more expensive but I love it. They’ve just started coming out with different scents as well

I think I may have to get a ’script because those OTC presription strength do not work.
I have actually found them to be less effective than regular.
And, Certain Dry, burns like hell!!
I have tried every brand, mitchum, degree, arm & hammer, Kiss My face natural, Secret (btw, your body get’s used to deodorants I hear and stop working). The only thing that seems to be helpful, not entirely perfect is Lady Speed Stick 24 hour.

girl, i have the same problem. it’s HORRIBLE! but, i finally had a breakthru! i’ve been using Secret Clinical for awhile now but never really followed the directions, which says to use it at nite. Apparently that’s when your sweat glands go into overdrive.

Use it at nite and then i lightly reapply during the day (just in case). it TOTALLY works. like, it’s a miracle. I used certain dri and it gave me a stinging rash. i’d skip it and use Secret.

GOOD LUCK!

I use certain-dri too and would swear by it. I, too, get this itch the next day or so but in my opinion, it is well worth it. When I’m in situations where it’s like 100+ degrees, I can smile and think, “ha ha..i’m not sweating!”

@beaninca: I’ve had used prescription Drysol and it is very similar to Certain Dri but stronger. It will also cause itching and burning on sensitive skin, especially if you have shaved the same day.

Botox has been proved quite effective for preventing underarm perspiration. I’ve never tried it but I would consider it if I still had bad problems.

When I am going to be in a high-stress situation, I use Certain Dri for a few days beforehand and then apply it every other day while traveling to keep stress-induced sweat down.

Other times I use Degree Clinical. But mostly, on a daily basis, I don’t wear anything. :)

@beaninca: @Mrs. Cherry Pie: I’ve also heard good things about Drysol and botox treatment. I would consider a trip to your doctor. As far as the itch goes- I also think the benefits totally outweigh the itch of Certain Dri.

Luckily I don’t have much moisture problem, but oh the SMELL! (Yeah, that’s more than you all wanted to know, I’m sure….) These days I find Degree works best for me.

@amy: My mother also has issues, and also says $1 Tussy from her local dollar store works miracles! I never knew aluminum chlorohydrate was the magic ingredient, but will have to give that a try.

My own holy grail would be something totally natural that also works well. But everything natural that I’ve tried has been *terrible*!

Drysol is the same as Certain Dri, except it is stronger. After using Certain Dri for a long time, it didn’t work for me anymore. I still have to use deoderant when I use these because it stops the excessive sweat but not smell. Yuck!

I use prescription Drysol. It works miracles! To start with, you have to use it nightly for a few nights and then down to once a week. I don’t even use it that often anymore! Then, I still use a regular deodorant during the day.

I tried CertainDri a few years ago, but it gave me a rash. However, I had no problems with Drysol…not even burning.

I use Certain Dri too and I stopped using it every other day and now only use the night one once a week and then the refresher every morning. Using it only once a week I don’t itch after putting it on. During the summer though I kick it up to about 3x a week. It’s the only thing I’ve found to work for me!

I am an excessive sweater…there I’ve said it, my own secret. I used to sweat SO much that in college I would soak entire sides of a shirt. Completely disgusting and embarrasing? Yep! I tried Certain Dri and Drysol and while they did in fact help, there were still times where I would have embarrasingly soaked shirts. So I had Botox injections. Not only are my armpits wonderfully wrinkle free, but mostly dry as well! After a few rounds of injections and some touch ups over the years I can use OTC stuff with the occassional (every other month) application of Certain Dri. Ahhhh, if only I knew earlier I wouldn’t have lost so many dates in college and had to wear black shirts everyday all day for 5 years. :)

Botox treatment for wrinkles has been reviewed a lot (http://www.realself.com/Botox/reviews) - but not for underarm sweating - i’m constantly running late in the morning and always forget to put on deodorant, cause the phone’s ringing and my blackberry is blowing up -

could i do botox for hyperhidrosis and have it last through my wedding in june? when would I ideally have the treatment?

Actually , I have heard the same that Botox can really help with sweat issues, especially on the palms and underarm area. I know there is treatment like that here in Chicago.

Re: Botox or surgery, you will still sweat but it will just come out elsewhere! I have a friend who had it done, and now his back and feet sweat like crazy.
