About Mrs. Deviled Egg

For this week’s Secret Life of Bees series, the secrets I’m telling aren’t anything new to someone who knows me in real life, but I thought they might be interesting little tidbits of information I could share with the hive. Here goes.1. I missed my calling as a clown.

In the last few years, I’ve acquired quite the skill for making balloon animals. I can make puppies, butterflies, rabbits and even hearts and swords with a few strategic twists of a balloon. Here are some examples of my work:

Fishy.

de2

Giraffe.

de3

Flower. (Modeled by Trevor, my nephew and our ring bearer.)

I only know how to make about 10 or 12 things, so I’m content with just volunteering my services at this time. I also have some pretty mad juggling skills. Give me 3 tennis balls, scarves, rings or basketballs and I’ll juggle them. I could so be a clown. I’m goofy enough, too, evident by my second “secret.”

2. Maybe you could guess what it is from the clue I gave you in the title of this post. Need another hint? I was on stage with one of America’s most vocal supporters of getting your pets spayed and neutered.

Surely you’ve guessed by now. Ding! Ding! Ding! I was a contestant on The Price is Right!

For spring break 2003, two of my college friends and I boarded a plane and flew to Beverly. Hills, that is. Swimming pools, movie stars. And we hit up the CBS Studios in LA.

Our main goal for the trip was to get on The Price is Right. We went to the show on Monday morning, had our turn with the producers, enjoyed the craziness that is waiting in line for TPIR and were disappointed that none of us were selected. On Tuesday, we did the same thing and the day ended in the same result. By Wednesday, the early rising to get in line was wearing on us, so we decided to sleep in and catch a taping of Star Search instead. Thursday rolled around and it was all or nothing for our Plinko dreams, so we took our places in line. After our 15 seconds with the producers, we were ushered inside to our seat.

I guess my goofy self made an impression on those producers because Miss Deviled Egg was the second name called to “Come on Down!” Cue my looks of disbelief and lots of jumping up and down.

I didn’t get out of contestant’s row until the 4th item up for bid, which were two banjos. Yes, I was on TPIR and I won banjos.

The game I played was called Step Up. I didn’t win everything, but I didn’t really lose either. This lucky Egg took home a miter saw, 2 rocking chairs, a desk and $1,500. You can read a little recap on my episode here. Scroll down to April 10, 2003.

I over spun when it was my turn at the wheel, thus ending my Price is Right journey. Darn that 55 cent section!

I don’t have any pictures of me on stage (no cameras allowed in the studio) and I only have a VHS copy of the show.  The best I can share with you right now is a shot of me working that miter saw.

So, there you have it. Two goofy secrets from one goofy Deviled Egg.

It is my fiance’s lifelong dream to be a contestant on The Price is Right! He got to sit in the front row of one of Drew Carey’s early shows, and he got a lot of air time, but unfortunately, his name was not called. He still has his nametag, though, and he can’t wait to try again!

I love that you won banjos and a miter saw, by the way. That is the best.

Heheheh that miter saw shot is a crackup!!! My good friend won a Dodge Neon on TPIR! YE-uh! I love your balloon talent, that’s pretty cool!!! I’m terrified of balloons popping… I once filmed a commercial where the sale was that you pop a balloon to find out your discount at the checkout counter, so they were popping balloons all day for this commercial. I was crying into the camera lense, it was so pathetic! But I’m so scared of balloons popping that i dont even like to be around them :)

My guy and I got to go see TPIR during Bob’s fourth-to-last episode last year but didn’t make it past the audition (21 hours in line will do that to a person’s enthusiasm…that’s so awesome you got to actually get up on stage though!

Did you guys stay at the Farmer’s Daughter? They have the best banana cream pie!

@Mrs. Penguin: Haha! Balloons popping is one of my top fears! I get sooo nervous being around little kids whos parents give them a huge balloon to pinch and pull at cause I just know its going to pop any time. LOL.

I am SOOOO jealous that you were on the Price is Right! I used to DREAM of being up there with Bob Barker…. but alas, I never made it out to CA before he retired :-( The fact that you won two banjos makes it an even better story!

@Mrs. Pinot Noir: The producers line up groups of about 15 - 20 people and give a very brief chance to say who you are and where you’re from. We learned to give a little more info about yourself and to show the louder part of your personality to get notices. I think they also look for creative shirts and people with interesting accents.
@Mrs. Penguin: I still flinch when I make stuff. A balloon popping is pretty frightening!
@Angel: That’s awesome that you went, too. The line was lots of fun. We made buddies with people who were there all week like we were. We booked rooms last minute and ended up staying at some inn nearby. Farmer’s Daughter is the one that takes puts pictures of the winners on the wall, right?
@AliCherri1: Yes, they deliver. I got my stuff in two separate freight shipments. I know for cars, they work with a dealer local to your residence if you are not from CA. And I did get a check for the $1500 via the mail, although that and more had to be paid in taxes. You can refuse any of the prizes, but I chose take everything.
@Miss Sea Breeze: I joke with my sisters about having balloon flower bouquets. !

@Miss Deviled Egg: Yep, that’s them! They even have a class you can take to have a better chance to get on stage. We had two days of tickets and I was 7-8 weeks pregnant at the time, so I ran out of steam before we could go to the second show. We gave them to a couple who travelled there, but couldn’t get in because their other tickets fell through…you know, one of those really cool people you meet in line. Eric sat down there with them for like two hours and talked all about our experience and what the guy interviewing you is looking for.

One of them made it to the row, made it up on stage, and by golly, she won the showcase. Eric and I take full credit of course. :)

There were 8 of us from BYU with customized shirts that had a picture of Bob with the phrase “The Price is Wrong Bob” and we STILL didn’t get chosen. It was kind of a bummer. What did happen is that Bob called us out for wearing red, the color of the U of U, BYU’s football nemesis. It was embarrassing.

Don’t leave us hanging, I *have* to know …. WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE BANJOS?!?!?

@Mrs. Tulip: I still have them, and aside from a few times I picked them up and tried to play them, they are collecting dust. :-( Maybe if I were a better guitar player, it would be easier. I looked into finding a banjo teacher, but couldn’t find one.

As for the other stuff, the $1500 all went towards the taxes and I had to pay a few hundred more on top of it. My aunt took the rockers and she gave me the amount I owed in taxes for them. They are nice, but not really my style. I have the desk in my room and it’s a beautiful piece of furniture. My dad claimed the miter saw and uses it often.

@Mrs. Avocado:
In between “commercial breaks”, the announcer said that if we begged really hard, we could get Bob to say the line from the movie. We got him to do it, and it was hilarious!
