Teaser 3: Temple Emergence

November 5th, 2008 @ 2:57 pm by Mrs. Avocado

We invited everyone invited to the dinner later that evening to join us as we emerged from the temple as husband and wife. For an LDS temple wedding, a small number of people are present to witness the sealing. All of those who witness the sealing leave the building before the bride and groom and the entire crowd waits outside for the new couple to emerge.

Most of the time the couple comes out, maybe raises their arms in triumph and then stands around awkwardly for a few moments before they figure out they are supposed to start hugging people. That wasn’t the case for us, as upon emerging we were greeted by Suavacado’s grinning parents walking towards us, looking, shall I say, a little bit mischievous.

Then, the coins came pouring out on our heads.

If you look closely in the middle of the frame you can see me screaming in shock and delight, for I happened to know exactly what they were doing. I wrote a post for the Bridal Guide a few months ago talking about different Danish and Polish traditions I was interested in incorporating into the wedding, and this was one of them. To quote myself:

Probably my favorite Polish tradition is throwing pennies at the bride and groom as they leave the ceremony. The best part of this practice is that the bride and groom must stop and pick the pennies up after they are thrown at them. It makes for some really great photos! The pennies are supposed to be an indication of financial fortune in the future, which must be why this bride and groom look so eager to bend down in their wedding attire and collect them.

I don’t know if I was eager to be picking them up, but I really didn’t have any other choice with all of our family and friends saying “Oh, I see one over here.” and “Woohoo, you guys missed one.”

Everyone present loved it. I even had one little cousin come find me afterwards and hand me $1 in quarters. “Here,” she said “I forgot to throw these when you came out because I was so excited.”

Reasons why I love these photos:

1. Isn’t it obvious? A real Pole incorporated a Polish wedding tradition into my thoroughly American wedding. My folklore professor would be so proud.
2. This was obviously something that had been planned ahead of time. Someone else planned something for our wedding. To think, I didn’t have to do any work to make this moment happen. :)
3. In the second photo I am attempting to both hold the coins and keep everyone from getting a look down my dress. My train wasn’t bustled and so I kept gathering coins underneath and sweeping them around. Don’t worry, my family pointed all of them out to me.

Kelli Nicole, you amaze me.

Beautiful!

So (another curious non-LDSer here), I know you wore a different dress for the actual sealing–were no photos allowed during that ceremony? I assume you changed into your pictured dress at some point after the sealing and before emerging–I’d love to hear about the significance of the other dress, and the timing involved… :)

I love the surprise on you face, but I also wish a picture with the face of your husband and the face of the man throwing the coins. I also wish there was a picture of your husband picking up the coins as well :(

Still! It’s a fun tradition, and I’m glad it was spontaneously incorporated into your wedding!

Isn’t great when you work so hard on something and you find out someone else took the time to plan something for you too :)

@Anya: I plan on doing a post on my other dress soon. I was married in my mom’s dress actually. I didn’t take any pictures of myself in it that day, but I did some after0shots with my mom later. I’ll post about my 2 dresses and my 2 veils soon!

@jtg: These are just the teasers that my photographer posted on her blog. I’m sure once I get my CD of pictures there will be many more to choose from.

@bostonbride:I want to so badly! I don’t have pictures yet though. I don’t think anyone wants textually based recaps. Anyone? Anyone? :)

How amazing! I’m Polish and I didn’t even know people did this! Hmm… *questioning the authenticity of her parents’ accents…*

P.S. Hells YA bring on the textually based recaps! Then photos after! We’re hanging on your every word, you know.

I love hearing about your LDS wedding. There’s a large temple in my town and it’s seems like such a mystery to me. I want to know more! How long is the sealing ceremony? Do you walk into the room alone or with Mr. A? You mention that others exit before you do, what did you do then? Is there a time for private prayer for your and Mr. A or some other tradition? What else? What else?

I love hearing about different traditions, religious or cultural… keep ‘em coming!

LOVE the suitcase pictures, by the way… :-)

Ow, I hope no one threw too hard! (Inset joke here about wrapping the coins in paper money to cushion the impact….)

@Miss Sea Breeze: I’m sure your parents could incorporate a few exciting things like this into your own wedding day if you asked them :)

@AC: AC I’m super excited you asked this because I thought about writing a post but I wasn’t sure if anyone would want to read it. Now I know I will have at least ONE reader so I will go ahead and start composing!
