A Gift for the Groom

November 6th, 2008 @ 12:16 pm by Ms Fondue

Note to Mr. Fondue: If you are on Weddingbee, please avert your eyes to another post lest you spoil my surprise!

I love buying gifts for Mr. Fondue. In 2004, when we started dating, I had bought his Christmas present by July. Of course, I couldn’t wait until December for him to have it, so I ended up giving it to him in October. Then I had an excuse to buy more presents for him, so he’d have something to open on Christmas. This is typically how my gift-giving goes.

Mr. Fondue, on the other hand, is always stumped on what to get me. I make lists for him, but he says he doesn’t want to buy off a list, as it doesn’t mean as much. So he’ll usually get me something random the day before he is supposed to give it to me. Sometimes it’s something I like, sometimes… not so much.

So, naturally, I’ve already bought his wedding gift, and he is panicking that he has to get me something. I’ve told him not to worry about it, and that I didn’t get him anything big, but he’s convinced that he now has to find the perfect gift. I try to help him by leaving catalogs around the house with pages dog-eared on the things I like, but I’m not sure he gets those hints.

But I wanted to share with the hive the little gift I got for him!

These are Nintendo controller cufflinks, made by the same Etsy seller who did my garter charms, which you can see in the background. Nothing big, but I hope that it makes him smile when he gets them the morning of our wedding.

How do you and your significant other handle gifts? Are you good or bad at shopping for presents?

Those are cute, but because there’s nothing to give perspective, they look enormous!!

I find my husband to be incredibly easy to shop for (in fact, let’s say dangerously easy to shop for), which astounds him: his family has told him for years what a challenge it is for them.

i love how personal the gift is!! i’m also going to go the route of cuff links for a gift but mine are going to have my fingerprints as the main part.

Those cuff links are awesome! Great idea Miss Fondue! Mr. Espresso typically has the same gift giving habit (shopping day before) as Mr. Fondue and was also scared about my wedding gift- but then he came up with a great idea and decided to buy my present on our honeymoon so I’d have something extra to remember our trip by… not that I’d ever forget it :) He ended up buying me a necklace from a Canadian jeweler who makes his silver pendants from 17- 19th century wax seals (something I put on the back of all my letter) I love it!!

Cute cufflinks! :)

My husband gets really stressed about giftgiving, so I keep a running spreadsheet on Google Documents where I store things that I think are especially cool with a weblink, if possible. He can go to that list whenever he gets stumped - it has all kinds of random things on it that I’ve added over the course of a few years, so even if he were to choose something from the list, I’d be completely surprised!

His other strategy is to buy me something gadgety, because he loves that kind of stuff so much. Wii games and random DvDs are examples of go-to items for him.

He was in big panic mode when he found out I got him a grooms gift. I ended up sending him to a jewelry store for something I’d seen. He bought what I picked up plus some extra earrings, which was sweet :)

Those are adorable! Mr. Cheese is like Mr. Fondue — he rarely thinks about these things ahead of time, but he hates for me to make suggestions. In fact, last Xmas he got me a bunch of random stuff but not the one thing I really wanted — pajamas! Argh. I, like you, buy gifts way in advance and then end up giving another one on the actual holiday. It’s fun!

So sometimes while reading your posts it shocks me that you and I have similar tastes on things, and that our fiancees are so similar. I’m getting mine green Lego cuff links from etsy. And since I can’t bear the thought of waiting till june to present them, he’s getting his on December 7th, the day we got engaged.

I love the cuff links, of course :) As for the gift thing, tell him you understand buying off the list may seem not as special, but a.) its always special from him b.) the list means its a guaranteed perfect gift (score for him) and c.) you won’t know which thing he picks so it’s still going to be a surprise!

What, if any, grooms cake are you doing? I’m trying to decide which theme to do (mine’s a bona fide geek)–WoW/Hammer/D&D, old school Zelda kinda thing, computer in general (so others get it) or console related…any suggestions?

@Danielle: Mr. Fondue is into D&D and all that as well, but he knew from day one that he wanted his groom’s cake to be the original NES console, which is mainly why I’ve bought stuff (such as the cufflinks and garter charms) that go along with that. Most people remember the NES too, so they’ll know what it is. That said, I think it would be kind of neat to do something with the Triforce!

those are cool!

since we are having a baseball themed wedding (and throughout our engagement my fiance would constantly quote Squints from The Sandlot), I got him a shirt that says “FOR-EV-ER” –Anyone else remember this movie? Pretty funny moment. Anyways, so yeah, that’s what i got him, along with a card too of course.

And he should be opening it up in just a matter of hours! Yup, getting married today and I’m sitting here on Weddingbee….lol
