One of the million and one things that’s on my to-do list for this weekend (our last before we leave… ack!!) is to do my hair trial… by myself, that is.
The resort where we’re going to be married, like most all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, has a salon on-premises. But I don’t know… there’s something about getting my hair done down there that makes me uber-nervous. One time when I was a bridesmaid for a cousin’s wedding, I got my hair done and it was so crunchy-curl-awful that I came home in tears, ripped it all out and started over myself. Oh, and I was $80 poorer. Grr.
I figure I know my own hair better than anyone else does so I’m going to give it a shot this weekend. My hair is quite long now (about halfway down my back), layered, quite thin (as in there’s not a lot of it), and stick-straight.
I did my own hair for the wedding we went to last weekend thinking it would be good practice and it turned out much better than I had expected.

I didn’t think to take photos of the back though. Oh well. It was very loose and easy-breezy, which is the look I’m after. I’m not sure a low side-pony is the way to go with my veil, but at least it’s a start.
The only thing I used was a 2″ curling iron, hairspray and bobby pins. I was surprised it lasted as long as it did. When using bobby pins on fine hair, here’s a tip: criss-cross them. They’ll stay in forever!
Even though the bobby pins worked well, I popped into Claire’s yesterday to check out what sorts of hair helpers they might have on hand. WELL! Hair accessories sure have come a long way since the topsy tail, let me tell you!

Topsy Tail - Anyone who’s watched late night tv is familiar with magical ponytail converter. (This one is the Claire’s version.)

Hairagami - The website seems to be down today but here’s a video demo of the awesomeness (??) in action.

Bandette Comb - Also available in a Vidal Sassoon version, it has some good reviews and the french twist is a classic, so this might be one to check out.

Fan Tail - It seems to be pretty complicated but you can find easier instructions online. Good for a more casual look, I think.

Doughnut - I remember finding one of these things in my mom’s drawer when I was young and being too scared to ask what it was in case it was something ‘girly’. Is that not hilarious?? Turns out it’s a chic way to create a chignon or hair bun. Might work for girls like me who have thin hair.

Puffy Pony - This is one that intrigued me because I went through a big phase once where I’d make a pony tail and then clip it up to try to get this look. If you curled your hair and then put it up, it might look quite nice for a wedding. Good for veil placement, too.

Style-a-Whirl - There seem to be a million things you can do with this and the rubbery texture of it makes me think it would be something that would survive hours of photos, dancing and bouquet-tossing.

Spiker - It has a scary name and the main picture doesn’t look too exciting (who wants visible combs in their hair??) but it might work for a french twisty-type up-do.

ClipDini - Last but not least, the accessory with the funniest name. It might be a bit bulky for thin hair and looks a bit hard to hide but hey, you never know.
Who knew there were so many hair-thingamabobs on the market!
Has anyone used any of these hair accessories with any success? Are you going to be doing your own hair on your wedding day?
