DIY Hair Helpers

November 7th, 2008 @ 3:48 pm by Mrs. Sea Breeze

One of the million and one things that’s on my to-do list for this weekend (our last before we leave… ack!!) is to do my hair trial… by myself, that is.

The resort where we’re going to be married, like most all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, has a salon on-premises. But I don’t know… there’s something about getting my hair done down there that makes me uber-nervous. One time when I was a bridesmaid for a cousin’s wedding, I got my hair done and it was so crunchy-curl-awful that I came home in tears, ripped it all out and started over myself. Oh, and I was $80 poorer. Grr.

I figure I know my own hair better than anyone else does so I’m going to give it a shot this weekend. My hair is quite long now (about halfway down my back), layered, quite thin (as in there’s not a lot of it), and stick-straight.

I did my own hair for the wedding we went to last weekend thinking it would be good practice and it turned out much better than I had expected.

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Trial1 trial1

I didn’t think to take photos of the back though. Oh well. It was very loose and easy-breezy, which is the look I’m after. I’m not sure a low side-pony is the way to go with my veil, but at least it’s a start.

The only thing I used was a 2″ curling iron, hairspray and bobby pins. I was surprised it lasted as long as it did. When using bobby pins on fine hair, here’s a tip: criss-cross them. They’ll stay in forever!

Even though the bobby pins worked well, I popped into Claire’s yesterday to check out what sorts of hair helpers they might have on hand. WELL! Hair accessories sure have come a long way since the topsy tail, let me tell you!

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Topsytail topsytail

Topsy Tail - Anyone who’s watched late night tv is familiar with magical ponytail converter. (This one is the Claire’s version.)

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Hairagami hairagami

Hairagami - The website seems to be down today but here’s a video demo of the awesomeness (??) in action.

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Bandette bandette

Bandette Comb - Also available in a Vidal Sassoon version, it has some good reviews and the french twist is a classic, so this might be one to check out.

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Fantail fantail

Fan Tail - It seems to be pretty complicated but you can find easier instructions online. Good for a more casual look, I think.

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Doughnut doughnut

Doughnut - I remember finding one of these things in my mom’s drawer when I was young and being too scared to ask what it was in case it was something ‘girly’. Is that not hilarious?? Turns out it’s a chic way to create a chignon or hair bun. Might work for girls like me who have thin hair.

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Puffypony puffypony

Puffy Pony - This is one that intrigued me because I went through a big phase once where I’d make a pony tail and then clip it up to try to get this look. If you curled your hair and then put it up, it might look quite nice for a wedding. Good for veil placement, too.

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Whirl whirl

Style-a-Whirl - There seem to be a million things you can do with this and the rubbery texture of it makes me think it would be something that would survive hours of photos, dancing and bouquet-tossing.

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Spiker1 spiker1

Spiker - It has a scary name and the main picture doesn’t look too exciting (who wants visible combs in their hair??) but it might work for a french twisty-type up-do.

DIY Hair Helpers : wedding hair punta cana Clipdini clipdini

ClipDini - Last but not least, the accessory with the funniest name. It might be a bit bulky for thin hair and looks a bit hard to hide but hey, you never know.

Who knew there were so many hair-thingamabobs on the market!

Has anyone used any of these hair accessories with any success? Are you going to be doing your own hair on your wedding day?

Miss SB I don’t think you have anything to be afraid of, dominican girls are awesome hair stylists. I have never had a bad experience with any dominican hair stylist. Good luck!

You can actually make your own donut-type hair accessory by cutting off the end of a clean sock and rolling it to be the same shape.

I’ve only used the topsy tail Ms. SB, and it worked ok for the style I was looking for (casual, tucked through pony) but I have heavy, fine hair and just got a little headache from having it pulled back and up all day at work. I had no idea there were so many hair implements…I’ll have to pay a visit to Claire’s myself soon! By the way, your hair looks really nice in the picture–did you maybe consider one of those loose, side chignons with a flower that have been in bridal pictures lately? You could wear your veil for the ceremony and take it off for the reception.

I love they way you did your hair for the wedding last weekend, I think that looks great :) and I can’t wait to see what you do for your own wedding.

@Julie: Thanks Julie! I guess I’m lazy and just don’t want to have to go in for a trial.. I’d rather be relaxing on the beach! And going in without a trial…well, that’s just not gonna happen. ;-)

@twentyducks: I did read that somewhere…! Sounds fun, have you tried it?

@Kat: I think that’s what I’ll try this weekend. I’ll document the results for you.

@AliCherri1: Thanks!! I’m a bit nervous to see what happens…

I wish I could do my own hair on my wedding day, or any day. I lack all talent in the hair and make-up section.

Ha ha I am a store manager at a Claire’s store and I just had to post because I think it’s so cute that you took pictures of all our hair implements in the store! Claire’s has a strict “no photos” policy (why? I don’t know…copyright issues? beats me) so you must’ve been in a bride firendly store, like mine! I always let women who I can tell are brides or bridesmaids take pictures in my store, because really? Planning a wedding is hard enough without some salesperson giving you a hard time about trying to coordinate! :o) But on Claire’s behalf, we are thrilled to have a hair posted devoted to us on Weddingbee! Yay! As for the products themselves, I haven’t used many, but our most popular one is probably the Hairagami, topsy turvy, or the clipdini. Good luck!

I have the hairigami and I swear I can’t get it to work for the life of me.

I have tried it. Unfortunately my hair was way too long at the time, but for shoulder length it would be fine. It ends up being a very tight looking almost ballet type of bun, which is too perfect for my taste, but would work well for others.

I’m with Miss Spring Roll! I can’t do my own hair or makeup to save my life. All those gadgets are interesting, I wonder if they could help me! ;) Good luck with your hair, I’m sure it will look lovely!

When my hair was long I loved the Topsy Turvy. I started with a very low ponytail and kept pulling my hair through until there was just enough to tuck in and pin. It ended up a soft roll at the nape of the neck. I used it for my wedding and just tucked flowers in it.
The hairigami and bandette comb I didn’t like. The syle a whirl wasn’t difficult to use I just didn’t like the final look.
Then I got tired of long hair and got it cut because I thought it would be easier…NOT.
I hate getting my hair done - something about strangers touching my head - yuk

Really good site…..I am not very talented with hair, but I think I could use some of these tools. Thanks.
