Back in the States!

November 10th, 2008 @ 12:25 pm by Mrs. Bee

We made it back from the Philippines, and we’re in Detroit right now! We have a layover for a couple of hours before we catch a flight back to NYC, so I’m just checking in on Weddingbee.  It was a grueling trip with four flights: El Nido to Manila to Nagoya to Detroit to Manhattan, but we’re finally here!

While we’re waiting for our connecting flight, I wanted to share a little secret with you guys.  I changed my last name a year ago on my driver’s license and social security card, but being the ultimate procrastinator that I am, I neglected to change my name on anything else… including my passport.

I chanced it and left the country with my passport bearing my maiden name.  And I’m happy to say that I made it through customs and into the States with no problem at all.  (Not that I’m endorsing that you do this in any way! ;) )

It took me almost three years to change my name.  Our 4th anniversary is coming up.  Hopefully I’ll finally get around to changing my name on my passport, bank accounts, credit cards, etc. before our 5th anniversary. :)

For those of you changing your last names, how long is it taking you to complete the process?

I wanted to do it right away- but it has been a month since the wedding and we still haven’t recieved the certified copies of our marriage license! I just hope it doesn’t take me years.

How did you get through customs?! My passport had my real first name and then i realized that my plane ticket had my abbreviated first name and they gave me the biggest hassle! I didn’t have my DL with me, since I had the passport, and it was such a big mess. Glad you’re back!!!

My mother didn’t legally change her last name until about 15 year after she got married. This was her first and only marriage, and they are still married. But for those first 15 years, she used several last names.. Mrs. Herlastname, Mrs. Herlastname-Hislastname, and Mrs. Hislastname. She finally had to legally change her name when the IRS got involved :) Now it’s Mrs. Herlastname-Hislastname!

I was married the same year, and I finally finished changing my name a year ago…or so I thought. Apparantly I forgot about re-registering to vote. Good thing I checked! I thought it was messed up from us moving.

Mrs Bee, your name-change time frame always makes me feel better! First I was just lazy and put it off, then I didn’t want to mess up my voter registration too close to the election, now I’m traveling for Thanksgiving and have the ticket in my old name…. But with the baby on the way, I’m surprised how strongly I’m attached to everyone having the same last name on the birth certificate. So at least there’s a deadline!

I did the big things right away: drivers license, passport, social security, credit cards. But the small things like Frequent Flier clubs and online memberships are a PAIN IN THE ARSE!! They may never get done at this point!

miss m

it takes much longer than i ever anticipated. i got certified copies of the marriage certificate straight away, then headed off to the social security office the day after we got back from honeymoon (early october). i just got the bleeping card in the mail yesterday (mid-november). now, i need to get to the dmv and start on the other stuff. i’ve started using the married name to sign up for new accounts, but changing the old ones will take a long, long time. glad to hear i’m not alone… it’s an odd thing to be in-between names.
