Choosing a Bridesmaid Dress

November 11th, 2008 @ 5:30 pm by Mrs. Martini

Anyone getting married will completely agree with me when I say that choosing a bridesmaid dress is TOUGH. I have 6 lovely ladies who have been kind enough to agree to be my bridesmaids. All six vary in height and weight and style preference. Can you just imagine the emails going back and forth on this topic? Some preferred long dresses, some short; others were well endowed in the boobage area while others not so much. I wanted everyone to wear something flattering, but I knew it would be impossible to find one that would make everyone happy.

After weeks of sending each other countless pictures and emails about countless different opinions, we decided it was best to just go to the store to try things on, because honestly you can’t ever be sure just by looking at pictures! So a couple of weeks ago, I made the trek to the store with two of my BMs. All three of us have very different body types so we thought that if we could find a dress that looked great on all of us, it would not only be as if we were in a really cheesy chick flick (can we say, Sisterhood of the Traveling Bridesmaid Dress??), it would probably be the winner.

We tried on a ton of dresses, the three of us crammed into one tiny dressing room, awkwardly trying not to “cross” boobs. It was tough holding in our laughter while trying not to make it obvious that we were totally taking pictures of ourselves despite the sign that forbade it (so bad… but we’d NEVER be able to decide on a dress without pictures!). When we were told we only had 10 minutes left of our “dressing room time”, we quickly narrowed the dress down to two favorites:

Dessy, in color Aubergine

Choosing a Bridesmaid Dress : wedding bridesmaid dress new jersey S17253301.jpg
Mori Lee, in color AubergineThis is what the Dessy dress looked like on us:

Choosing a Bridesmaid Dress : wedding bridesmaid dress new jersey Q17253302.jpg Choosing a Bridesmaid Dress : wedding bridesmaid dress new jersey Q17253303.jpg
(Don’t mind the color)And this is what the Mori Lee dress looked like on us:

(Again, don’t mind the color). we wanted the shorter version of the dress, but the only dress they had available to try on was the longer version.

I was partial to the Dessy dress because I liked the satin material, and the dress was flattering to all three of us. I was shocked when I didn’t even have arm pit fat! No fair - I have armpit fat when I wear my wedding dress. I almost wanted to wear the BM dress instead! Also, the Dessy dress comes in the perfect shade of purple. I will also have the option of buying fabric to make a matching sash for me, if I choose to do a purple sash during the reception. The Mori Lee dress was nice as well, but as you can see in the model picture above, the color is not a true aubergine/eggplant but more of a blue-ish grey. The store did not have a dress in that color, and the swatch they provided wasn’t making me feel much better either.

Another reason that I liked the Dessy dress better was that it will still most likely be a bit cold in March of 2009. The Mori Lee dress seemed more of a springy, fun dress while the Dessy seemed more elegant. After seeing the pictures Mr. Martini confirmed our thoughts, and we finally decided on the Dessy in the darker, aubergine color.

How did you and your maids decide on bridesmaid dresses?

I think the Dessy looks great on all of you! Beautiful colour too! It was a great idea to all go together to try on the dreses. Other brides, like myself, might copy that idea!

Gosh, I’m having this dilemma as we type! In fact, we chose a dress, two girls bought it…then I chaged my mind and decided I hated it! I feel awful, but I really do hate the dress, theres no living with it.

Now we’re in the email back and forth process. One of my maid of honors lives in Australia and will be back here after I’ve left the country for 6 months. So they may end up choosing the dresses without me here!

As someone else also searching for the best shade of Aubergine, I’m a fan of the dessy as well :)

Congrats on finding the dresses!

I like the dessy too.
Great for the waistline! Color is great and satin is very popular right now.

I’m going to have the BM’s do the LBD. As of today, leaning towards J Crew. More of a cocktail dress.

The Dessy dress is much more flattering, especially for all body types. Plus, if it was shortened, it would look like a former “bridesmaids” dress. I also know from experience (I am a Bridal Consultant at a top bridal store in Florida), that Dessy is totally reliable and so easy to work with. Their fabric and construction is so much better than most bridesmaids companies, and you will be totally happy with the end result. Go with the Dessy!

They are both beautiful. We decided not to decide. Each girl chose their own dress. I gave them the guidlines — The color, the store, and no strapless — and the each picked the dress they wanted.
I think they turned out very nice — click the link to see a pic: http://singhiphotos.shutterfly.com/wedding/458

Wow, I cannot imagine having to find a dress that looked great on everyone. I didn’t have this issue because I only had a matron of honor - my sister. It has made so many things so much easier. I just told her color and length and she picked one that looked great on her. It was especially nice since she had a baby about 3 months before my wedding, so if the dress ended up not fitting, she could just get another without worrying about not matching other girls (but it fit anyway)! So kudos to you for finding such great options.

I like them both…but I think I like the Dessy one a little more. It is very elegant.
I ended up picking a designer, length, and fabric, and let my three bm’s chose their own dress. The three they chose are the same type of style but with small differences. It couldn’t have been any better, even if I’d have chosen them myself.

I like the Dessy dress better, also! It’s such a pretty color and strapless flatters basically everyone. I actually picked out my BMs’ dresses when I was shopping with my mom. We saw a dress we both liked, it was beautiful color and fit basically all of my girls’ needs. So I tried it on (since I’m curvy like one of my girls and tall like the other two) to see how it fit, then called my sister (in another city and the second body type) to go out and find the dress and try it on. She loved it, so I knew it was going to work.

I fifth or sixth the preference for the Dessy dress! I gave my gals the choice between David’s, Jim Hjelm, Ann Taylor and J. Crew (I sent them a few styles I liked from each) and let them choose. From there, they had 4 styles to choose from; J. Crew was great to work with and the girls might actually be able to wear them again (as they are Cotton Cady material):)

I really like the Dessy dress. I’m also looking for dresses in eggplant, but when I saw the aubergine in person it looked more like a reddish-purple. I think I am going with Concord.
