Rocky Mountain Highway

November 12th, 2008 @ 12:31 pm by Mrs. Shortcake

{Continued from PART I: A Journey of Three Thousand Miles }

So, where were we? Ah yes, crammed into the back of the family van, sandwiched between suitcases and suits and boxes and dresses and giant mountain dogs. Good times. We drove across the Prairies and experienced all the wonder of the plains (Hay! Horizon! More hay! Ooh, corn, that’s different…), and when those fifteen minutes had passed, we practiced our somnolence.

Ahh sleep. Good old, not-to-be-had-for-love-nor-money-in-the-days-before-the-wedding sleep. We drove all day, and finally reached the Rocky Mountains. One sleep-of-the-dead night in Banff later, we were ready to set off again. As we set off at the luxuriously late hour of 9:30 AM, I was bombarded with my homesickness. Oh, mountains…

sc2

I missed you so.

sc3

Everything was still and quiet. Grey and drizzly, the temperature and the splashing raindrops reminded me of cool mornings in Vancouver. Riding the bus and reading Jane Austen. Bundled up in my Paddington bear wool coat, cheetah boots on my feet, “London Fog” tea drink in my hand.

Everything was so blue. So green. So eerily silent. I leaned my head on the cool glass of the car window and watched the morning mists rising off of the mountainsides.

Romance and undergraduate nostalgia aside, the rain made it difficult to capture very many shots through the passenger side window, so you’ll have to be content with this:

As we crossed the Rockies and passed each familiar sign and landmark (The Enchanted Castle! Sicamoose! The Bear Tunnel!), I was reminded of family road trips to see my grandmother in Revelstoke. Except, on those trips I played with my Barbies, and on this trip I only had my camera to keep me occupied. :)

sc6

Still, with each sign and each kilometer, my anticipation grew, to the point that when we reached Hope, I was positively twitching around in my seat. In Chilliwack, I was drumming my fingers on the cooler next to me. When we passed Abbotsford, I was on the phone, counting down with my mother. When we finally entered Langley… well, I’ll just save the rest for another recap, mkay? ;)

Oh… I love the Rockies! They are just too beautiful. Now you’re making me want to go on a road trip!

I know what you mean about anticipation starting at about Hope. My family lives on Vancouver Island, so whenever we drive out to visit them it’s about at Hope where everyone starts to get antsy. The highway in the lower mainland is quite long, especially if you’re wanting to reach the cities closer to the ocean.

Looking forward to the rest of your recaps! :)

I’m heading up to the Canadian Rockies for Thanksgiving (US). Thanks for reminding me of the beauty that is awaiting.
