Joining of the Spring Rolls

November 12th, 2008 @ 1:27 pm by Mrs. Spring Roll

Yesterday was a big day for Mr. Spring Roll and me. No, we didn’t elope. We opened our first joint bank account. Sister Spring Roll works as a Personal Finance Representative at WaMu. Needless to say, we visited her branch for our big day.

Sister Spring Roll’s sweet manager Shannon opened our account. The process was painless. We showed two forms of ID, answered a few questions, and gave our John Hancock.

For now the account will serve as a wedding account, mainly to hold money and pay our vendors. When we get married, it will serve as our joint account, although we have decided to keep our own accounts as well.

Are you opening a special account for wedding expenses?

We had a designated credit card for wedding stuff, but since darn near everything was done via checks, that ended up not being so useful. Checks! Who uses checks anymore? Vendors, that’s who.

Yes, Jessie, WaMu is still open. Just because they were bought does not mean they close. Most companies are owned by other companies.

We haven’t opened a new account for expenses, but that’s a great idea. It’ll save you the hassle later now that you got that out of the way already, any way!

WAMU was bought by Chase Morgan but are for sure still up and running. My fiance and I opened a joint savings at WAMU just recently. We’ll add joint checking after we’re married.

HEY! I Worked for WaMu until about a year ago teehee.
Anyways, my FH and I opened our account with TCF a bit ago so we could keep things organized.
Note to those who are living separately still: Do not put any other address other than your current one. I was trying to save some trouble by putting his addy down under my name for after we join forces and I received all these nasty letters from the bank threatening to close if I didn’t bring them my Social Security card (?) all over my address being different.

My fiance and I opened a joint ING Direct savings account online. It’s great b/c it has a high interest rate, and we each set it up so a certain amount transfers automatically from our (separate) checking accounts to the ING account every pay day. Whenever we need to a pay a vendor, one of us will just transfer the amount needed from the ING to one of our checking accounts and make the payment. Works for us. Congrats on your milestone!

We just have a credit card devoted to wedding purchases. Not so excited to see the final bill, but it keeps things organized I guess!

FI and I opened a joint money market mutual fund with USAA (both of our fathers were in the military so we were both already members), we each deposit a set amt. each month and also have our honeymoon fund there. I do all my banking through USAA so it’s really easy to transfer money and keep track of it. It acts kind of like a savings acct., the rate of return is better than most we found, and since the financial meltdown it’s now even FDIC insured!

I have to say, even though I set it up over the phone, it made the whole getting married thing feel REALLY REAL. Since I’ve heard the stories about all the checks I’ll be writing closer to the wedding, we’ll probably transfer the majority of the funds into my checking acct. close to the date. It will act as our emergency cash fund after the wedding, since it’s somewhat accessible and earns a decent return for cash.
