Found my way to the east coast, and Mr. Champagne kept me here so we're planning a wedding from afar in my hometown Vail, Colorado. I'm secretly obsessed with reality TV, Wii games where I can shoot a gun, country music, and Caesar: Dog Whisperer. I also spend time pretending to golf, backseat driving, having one way conversations with our MinPin Maxwell, loving champagne, and wedding perfecting… I mean, planning. I use way too many repeated symbols and letters when I write, and I'll love Mr. Champagne endlessly…

Whew! That’s a lot of bees, and I give in. I do have a few secrets that I haven’t shared with the hive. It’s not because I’m embarrassed… OK maybe it is, but I thought I might share with you my somewhat double life. Here goes: I was an orchestra playin’, a capella sangin’, performing arts nerd.

When I was very young, I was watching TV at home and saw a woman playing a violin. According to my mom, I got really close to the TV and wouldn’t budge. I begged for violin lessons and my parents agreed. Because I was only about 4 years old, I started on a little cardboard violin and gradually moved my way up to a full size violin throughout the years. We lived in the sticks of Colorado (OK, the mountains really, but it was still pretty rural). My poor parents had to constantly drive me from lessons, to dance class, to orchestra practice. It exhausts me just thinking about it now.

My love for music didn’t stop with the violin. I started singing with the local groups and eventually had to travel two hours away twice a week to Denver (the big city) to sing with the Colorado Children’s Chorale. I moved from there to state and county choirs and finally went to prep school for the performing arts. I gradually moved into musical theater and was living a completely double life. I wanted more than anything to be popular, so I really tried to fit in. Most popular middle school and high school crowds (at least in my hometown) aren’t involved in musical theater, so I had two very defined, different, and fabulous groups of friends.

Here I am in high school during a performance of Cabaret.

And perhaps one of my most embarrassing high school experiences is this group I used to sing in. We were carolers, and we would go around the town of Vail dressed up in bonnets, hoop skirts, top hats—you get it. I was by far the only member under 40, and I’m not sure any of my friends knew I sang in this group. I guess it’s no secret anymore!

Fast forward to the college years, and I was still singing. My freshman year, I auditioned for an a capella group and I truly believe it made my college experience complete. Sure it wasn’t the most popular crowd, but I loved the group and became really close to all of the girls. When Champ and I met, he knew all about my a capella nerdiness and was totally comfortable attending our shows (well, at least most of them).

So there you have it. It’s all out now—I was/am/will always be a geek. A capella or bust, man.

Anyone else live a somewhat double life with two groups of friends or two completely different hobbies?

Oh champ! We share the same secret and double life! Growing up I had my dance/show choir friends and then my group of my friends of whom I needed to extend my social status. It seems so silly now that I was ashamed every year to get on stage when the show choir performed it’s annual musical in front of the school. I danced for 17 years at a small studio in my hometown and have amazing memories and friendships because of it. I look back now and though I wouldn’t change a thing, I would tell younger me to be proud of your talents! ahhh… memories =)

I can’t sing myself, but I love listening to a capella groups! When I was in college, I heard from some of my friends who did sing that they are really tough to get into - you must be really good, especially to be singing the solo in your pic!!

I never did understand the draw to the “popular” crowd. We were pretty popular among ourselves, why did we need someone to tell us that that other group was more special for some reason? Us band dorks just didn’t care. It was great.

That’s so awesome!! YAY for the artsy fartsy!! haha.

I played the violin between the ages of 5-17 as well. But for me, it was mandatory so I definitely did not enjoy it at the time. Now every once in a blue moon I will pick up my old violin and make a clumsy attempt at some music. I was also a choir geek, with many years of voice lessons. Eventually I got too wrapped up in other things in college and let that go too. Miss those days tho…

Funny, it never actually occurred to me to be ashamed or embarrassed because I played the piano for the jazz choir and the school musicals, and the bass for the jazz band and our local light opera company. We were always pretty convinced that we were having a lot more fun than the “popular” kids - whom we mostly felt superior to, in a catty way, because we thought we were concerned with much more important things than who was dating who, or where they bought their clothes and makeup.

Later on, after graduating from college, one of my best friends was a girl who had been a cheerleader at our high school. She said that she always sort of wanted to hang out with us, because it seemed like we had so much fun. So I guess that even though we were sure those kids thought they were better than us, that wasn’t necessarily the case.

Today, the band and drama kids that I hung out with in high school are all pretty successful. Some are engineers and scientists, and some are high school teachers, a couple are professional musicians, and at least two are Microsoft millionaires. The popular kids? I have no idea.

Those younger pics of you are so sweet! I am also a total music nerd. Not only was I a member of the marching band in high school, but I spent many childhood summers at “Singing School,” learning to write, read, and sing music. It was some of the most fun I have ever had those summers!

This is like deja vu. I started playing viola in 4th grade and eventually tacked on violin as well. Then… in 6th grade, I joined All City Choir. Sometime before 8th grade, my voice changed, and I couldn’t manage it any more. I completely get your double-life!

Until I was injured last year I was a dance major who played rugby…

I always envy those who have a good voice, I only sing if the music is too loud to hear myself! besides, a capella is awesome, rock on!
