Mile High Manicure

November 13th, 2008 @ 2:34 pm by Mrs. Champagne

So I know I’ve been a little MIA this week and it’s only because I’ve been so freakin’ busy! I’m headed to Colorado this weekend for my final wedding weekend. I’ve got a shower Sunday, meetings with literally every vendor Monday, hair and makeup trials Tuesday and then it’s back to the real world. It’s tough to plan a wedding from so far away!

Because I’m making this trip, I’ve tried to get a bunch of projects done so I could bring them with me and leave them instead of shipping everything. So I promise I’ll post about my most recent DIY projects soon! In the meantime, I thought I would share with you a little secret that I picked up on our last vacation.

A few months ago, Champ and I went to visit my Dad in Big Sky, Montana. I’m used to strange summer weather, but it literally snowed the ENTIRE trip (in the middle of June!!). I definitely wasn’t ready. On the way home, we started talking to one of the airline attendants. He was wonderful and while in flight he told me about the best hangover drink (half beer and half bloody mary mix) and the best 5 minute manicure!

I have to admit. I’m a bit of a beauty/product junkie. So when this Delta dude suggested a new way to make my hands “wedding ready”, I was doubtful.

Step 1: Some sugar!

Step 2: a few lime slices. Try to really rub the sugar into the back, palms, and tips of your fingers.

Step 3: After you rub, either wash with 1. vodka (just a little and better for the end result) or 2. soda water

Once you are done with the three steps above just rinse with water and your hands will be so so smooth!

All I have to say is that the results were GREAT! I’ve had manicures all over the place, and my hands were just as smooth after a four hour flight as they were after a four hour spa treatment!

I don’t kid about beauty… this works! All at a mile high- who knew!?!

Any other good quick manicure ideas?!

Do you use the lime slices to rub the sugar on your hands?

i’ve got nothing for manicures but for dry/peeling lips use some gran. sugar and honey (i find the honey in teh bottle that’s started to crystalize cuts out the need for more sugar) rub it on and then wipe it off with a cloth or even napkin. it’s a great exfoliant : )

Same here, confused with the steps? :) Do you need to make a water-sugar mixture then add lime to it? Then rub? Then rinse with soda water?

ok… sorry for the vague instructions- I’ve lost my sanity a little!

So the lime slices are squeezed and you cover your hands with the juices. Then you put granulated sugar in the palms of your hands and scrub scrub scrub. I tried to use as much lime juice as I could to make kind of a paste with the sugar. Sorry!!

I’m loving the use of natural products for a quick, at-home manicure. Who wouldn’t love to get silky smooth hands with items you have in your kitchen?!

If you’re looking for a product to have onhand when you’re short on limes and sugar, you should definitely try out this hand scrub called Show of Hands Instant Manicure. This stuff is amazing. No lie. It’s not sold at stores because it is a product marketed by BeautiControl at-home Spa Escapes, but you can get some here: http://www.beautipage.com/diannareyes

AND I think it’s on sale! Happy Scrubbing! ;)

This is the best in-flight beauty tip I’ve ever heard! I’m going to feature this on my wedding/travel blog (www.globetrottingbride.com) next week.

@lylawedding: Well thanks! I’m hoping you can edit it to include the more detailed instructions above in my comment! I was a bit vague in the original post!! I looked at your blog- I love that Moroccan milk tradition!

Let me tell you some tips on how to give yourself a manicure. Remove old nail polish thoroughly. Soak hands in warm water for 10 or 15 minutes. Dry hands. File nails in one direction only. Avoid using a seesaw motion. Push back cuticles. Use a cuticle moisturizer if they do not push back easily after soaking. Add a second coat for deeper color. Finish the manicure with a top coat of clear polish.
