The Date That Almost Wasn’t!

November 13th, 2008 @ 1:09 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

So, before I dive into wedding details, I should probably set the scene a little for you all and tell you how the lovey Mr. Powder Puff and I came to be.

Well, back in 2006 I had been dating a string of guys that were, how should I put this, not the nicest guys in the world. After Christmas I had become so fed up with being let down that I decided to try something new. Enter the world of online dating. My mom had been talking to me about online dating for quite some time, and I thought, what the heck! So I created a snazzy little profile for myself and let the magic happen. I emailed back and forth with a couple of guys for a while and went on a few dates with another, but no one really caught my eye.

At the end of February, I was about to cancel my account when I got an email from a guy who really sparked my interest. He seemed cute, funny and really sweet. We wrote back and forth for a couple of weeks, and finally decided to meet. As the date grew closer and closer, I started to freak out. “What if he’s not all that great?” I said to myself. “Do I really want to venture out into the snow for some guy who’s going to be as blah as the others?” This internal dialog went on for some time, until I was worked up into a nervous frenzy and canceled the date! Mr. Powder Puff was so sweet (I told him I thought I had the flu), and told me to have some soup and feel better.

“Phew,” I thought, “dodged that bullet.” I expected never to hear from this guy again. The funny thing is, the next day he called to see how I was doing. This was completely new behavior to me—no guys ever called right away! They always waited over a week, or didn’t call at all! The difference was, Mr. Powder Puff actually wanted to go on a date with me. His persistence was so cute, that I finally relented and went out with him. And thank goodness I did!

Mr. Powder Puff is unlike any other guy I’ve dated. He brings me flowers. He tells me I’m beautiful. He calls when he says he’ll call. I can now say that I understand when people say that you just know when someone is right for you. With Mr. Powder Puff, I just know!

Next up, our engagement!

How did you know your significant other was right for you?

Yes, nice guys do finish first!! My fiance was also similarly very caring and quite the gentleman when we first met, and still is 5 years later!! Unfortunately such guys are a dying breed in this world!!

I met my FI online too! Our first date was amazing, and by 6 months we knew this was it– actually, he was the one who first brought up marriage. Almost 3 years later, we’re still incredibly happy and having so much fun planning for our marriage and starting a family.

Can’t wait to hear more about your wedding!

What a sweet story! Mr. Taffy and i can relate- we met at a friend’s birthday party right before Christmas. It took us a month before we went on our first date- I was (actually) really sick the week after we met, then it was Christmas, then new years, then he got the flu, then the auto show was here and we both were crazy for work as a result… I thought we were never going to get together, even though our reasons were legitimate! Both of us thought the other wasn’t interested from time to time. I’m so glad that we finally went out, he is the love of my life!!! :)

Mr. Dumpling ate an entire plate of collard greens, fried chicken and mashed potatoes on our first “date” (well it wasnt a date…it was more like a meal together) at Cracker Barrel. I like a man with an appetite!

What a sweet story! Boy and I knew about by the end of our first date. We had just gone to see a terrible movie at a run-down theater in our college town and he walked me back to my place. He ended up coming in because we were chatting and it was cold. Cut to 4 am, and we’re still on the couch talking.

Yup. We actually had the “stayed up all night talking about our lives” corny as all heck first date. :)

The husband and I also met through online dating, even though we lived and worked within walking distance of each other. The first date was horrible, horrible, terrible, awful. Two days later, work was snowed out and we were bored, so we tried again. Success!

Your story is so similar to mine it’s scary. I was also on a bad run going from one Mr.Not-So-Right to the next. After taking some time to learn about myself, I entered the world of online dating (JDate). I, too, was close to canceling my account before meeting my Mr., and he, too, taught me the meaning of respect, a recipricol relationship, and knowing when someone is “the one.” I look forward to hearing more about your relationship and watching your wedding unfold. Thanks for sharing your story with us :)

awww mr PP is so cute in that pic! i’ll give the abbreviated version of our story - we’ve known each other since middle school, had the same friends, didn’t care for each other. got into serious relationships after high school, broke up within a month of each other, then ran into each other at a party. got in way over my head (let’s just say we faught ALOT), I finally got tired of a year of back and forth behavior from him, and told him I was done and even though he was the one, I’d rather be single the rest of my life then ever deal with this behavior ever again!! (enter much more sassiness and cruel language)

we didn’t talk for 4 days, he called and asked me to please come over so he could say what he had to say, and if i wanted to leave after that he would leave me alone. I did, and he asked if I really thought he was the one, I said not anymore (boo, I’m so cold sometimes!) he said that was too bad cuz those 4 days were pure hell and he’d do anything to be with me.

fast forward 3 years later, and he’s the sweetest man in the world now! I’m really glad I gave him the millionth chance I didn’t think he deserved, and he promised to spend the rest of our lives making it up to me! :)

aww. my bf and i met online too! i knew he was right for me when i pictured him standing at the alter with me in my fabulously bland and nondescript wedding dream. seriously, i always got as far as me in a white dress, a pastor and a guy with a fuzzy head…until i started dating the bf. one day that fuzzy head turned into his and the ideas started POURING out!

The beginning of our story is just about the same as yours: string of bad dates with not so great guys, decided to try internet dating, and the rest is history.

Awwwww, that’s so sweet! It actually took a long time for me to realize Mr T was “the one” — like 6 months of dating and a 3-month breakup…. But like your Mr PP, he didn’t play any games. From the first time he called me, he called every day since without a single fail. Don’t know why guys so often think they have to “play it cool”, when it’s MUCH more impressive to be truly available (not stalker-y, obviously, but clearly “there”).

@Mrs. Tulip: I agree! After our first date, Mr. PP went on a trip with his buddies for a weekend. He called every single day when he was on the trip. I swear I fell for him right then and there!
