About Mrs. Sushi

Money Business

November 13th, 2008 @ 6:08 pm by Mrs. Sushi

Money. A sensitive issue. Although, one of the first questions we’re asked when we tell people we’re planning a wedding in Hawaii is, “Who’s paying for the wedding?” Well, we are, although my dad has generously offered to pay for our luau reception/dinner. Mr. Sushi and I will be paying for the bulk of the trip/event.

A few months ago I applied to a few retail stores in hopes that having a part-time job (on top of my current full-time job) would bring in extra income. Well, during the summertime, retail stores aren’t exactly booming with new hirees. Now I’m relieved that I wasn’t called for an interview, because I’ve been doing sooo much freelance photography that I barely have time to myself (let alone time for Mr. Sushi).

I’ve enjoyed photography for as long as I can remember. I actually can remember being in a dark room at age 8, not really knowing what I was doing, but it was fun. As a young kid in the ’80s, my photography skills were pretty much limited to how to push a button on a point and shoot camera. Growing up in a military family, I got the opportunity to see many (and live in many!) countries as a child. My dad was an intermediate-novice (oxymoron?!) photographer and had a manual Minolta SLR camera; he would document our travels. His camera would end up being my first SLR camera.

I don’t consider myself a professional photographer. All of my “customers” are friends, family of friends, and they come mainly by word of mouth. I sometimes feel weird charging friends money, so we’ll sometimes exchange services instead. In exchange for me doing photos of a friend and her family, her husband is installing two lights and a ceiling fan at my house. Not a bad deal!

Besides being able to build up my portfolio and gain more experience, I’ve been able to pocket a nice chunk of change!

I gotta admit, I was hoping a retail job would help when it came to holiday shopping (store discounts!), but I really think I got the better end of the deal. While the extra stress of getting all this work done has affected me, it has also taken away the added stress of figuring out how to pay for the wedding.

Did you take up an extra job to pay for your wedding?

I was thinking of taking a part time job to help out with expenses. I applied for switchboard jobs at the hotels (so I can work evenings and weekends) I got called for interviews and shortlisted before both my parents and FILs said it couldn’t happen. I’m really glad they sat me down and talked me out of it. I’m working full time and taking classes part time. Trying to balance a part time job on top of that would have been insane. I have no idea what I was thinking!

I wish I had a cool hobby that could make me some money on the side like your photography business :)

My fiance’s hours at work (and pay) just got cut in half so it was either go get another job or no wedding. It’s in September of next year and we are trying to do it for under $10,000. So right now I’m working full time at a florist, at a retail store a few nights a week and days on the weekends and I just got hired to be a server on the nights I’m not working already. My fiance and I live apart so I’ll never get to see him now but at least we can maybe save our wedding. Good luck to all the girls and guys in the same situation!

How awesome! My FI consistently dreams about being a freelance photographer (as a second job). He’s currently begging me to buy him a new fancy camera for Christmas!

I was really lucky when it came to wedding finances. My grandmom, who I was very close to and who passed away a few years ago, gave me bonds for every gift-giving occasion when I was growing up. I was allowed to spend them whenever I wanted, but my parents encouraged me to save them for a time when I really needed them.

Well, when my husband and I got engaged, I worried about how we would pay for the wedding since my parents were divorced and were both struggling with finances. Carter had a fairly new job and I was in school. Then, I remembered the bonds. They paid for about 1/4 of our wedding, and it made me cry that perhaps this was my grandmom’s way of being with us on our wedding day. It was really neat how it worked out.

@StrawberryBaby: I’m glad you didn’t overdue it! Time is a lot more precious than money. :)

@Tamara: What a touching story. I’m sure it brings a smile to your face knowing that your grandma was there helping you out even though she couldn’t be there in person.

@Tamara: No way! If I hadn’t read your comment, I would’ve never remembered that my dad purchased bonds for me when I was born! I just asked him about it and he hadn’t really thought of it either!
They are worth what I would’ve made in 2-3 months working a temporary retail job for the holidays! Much less stressful.
THANK YOU for the reminder :-).
