The Secret Life of Bees: Tulip Edition

November 13th, 2008 @ 4:22 pm by Mrs. Tulip

Hello, Hive! Don’t mind me, just popping in because I couldn’t resist the oh-so-fun “Secret Life of Bees” feature! Not that there’s anything earth-shattering, but…

Six random facts from the life of a Tulip:

The Secret Life of Bees: Tulip Edition : wedding Tulip1 tulip1

In the spirit of Miss Hot Cocoa’s post, a photo of my worst nightmare. I literally cannot view this photo with more than my peripheral vision!

1. Anything involving fingernails Freaks. Me. Out.

I can clip my own nails, but as a child it took many long minutes and lots of emotional coaching to face the task. Any thought of actual nail trauma makes me want to pee. Between that and my bat-like hearing, Mr. T can only cut his nails when I am out of the house.

2. I can turn both feet around, simultaneously, to face behind me.

3. I had my first kiss at 21. There were a few dates before, but not many. In high school, I was far too shy to even talk to a boy. And college was the opposite problem – there were so many boys around there wasn’t any challenge in it. Dating seemed more boring than the other things I could do with my time. (Which, actually, didn’t change even after 21. I didn’t get into dating till I fell in love for the first time, at 28.)

4. In high school, I read “the great books” for fun. And it’s been straight downhill from there! Now I’m addicted to detective novels – to judge from my reading list, it appears 1 in 5 Americans is a serial killer.

5. In the days before modern medicine, I would have been legally blind (contacts), snaggletoothed (orthodontia), deformed (scoliosis brace), and dead at 26.

6. In light of #3, I had only one serious, multi-year relationship before Mr. T. He worked for a rock star. (No names, but let’s just say his employer was also his Boss…) Dating someone on tour was miserable. But having free range at concerts? Totally, once-in-a-lifetime, amazing! Turns out “access” is totally seductive, and now I have trouble going to concerts because I hate being stuck in nosebleed seats with the rest of the lucky-to-have-gotten-tickets-at-all nameless thousands. (But being stuck there with Mr. T? Totally worth it!)

Whoa whoa whoa, dating someone close to Bruce?? Awesome! Well, not with the constant tour stuff, but still, very cool.

Your secrets were very alluring. Mr. HC has a total mancrush on Bruce — did I tell you we’re doing “Drive all night” for our first dance? I won’t tell him about your ex, though, b/c he’ll certainly want to know if he’s available. For Bruce, I’m sure he’d switch teams. ;-P

I don’t have a nail problem, and that picture is making me wretch… so gross!

I know what you mean about getting used to certain privileges that you no longer have access to… I used to date some very interesting accomplished people who gave me unprecedented access to their career perks. I much prefer having a normal stable man, without their career perks, but with constant love and a very healthy relationship… As you say, totally worth it!

That must’ve been a rush to be so close to somebody that big. I work as a stagehand part-time, so I get to be backstage at the end of concerts and see the stars when they come offstage. I even met Bruce backstage! Mind you, it was just a passing moment when he said hi and I told him it was a great show (I was sent to wait inside the arena with prime viewing for the roadie. I got to see the last half hour of the show from there!) and he said thanks. I’ve been able to “meet” other people, too, like Gretchen Wilson and Bon Jovi. I saw Rod Stewart but he was lying (literally!) down in the truck bed of a gator riding to his room and waving at us backstage.

I know what you mean about the nail thing, but somehow I got over it. When I was little my mom would have to cut my nails when I feel asleep or I would freak out. I remember one time thinking she was going to do it that night so I couldn’t sleep thinking about my nails being cut…I know I’m a weirdo.

@Mrs. Green Tea: Ha ha, I’m 5 months pregnant … I pee 12 times an hour anyway. ;) But, yeah.

@Lillindy: Sounds like how we’re forced to clip our cats’ nails. But hopefully in your case there weren’t drugs involved! (Catnip makes them sleeeeeeepyyy….)

Sorry to drop that photo on y’all, everybody! Now that I see it again, ew. Just, ew!

Ok, we need a picture of that feet thing! :) I also didn’t have my first kiss until 21, not that it’s a bad thing, but glad to hear someone else say it too :)

@Natakie16: Ha, I thought about taking a picture of the feet, but a lot of people tend to find it REALLY disturbing! (Though compared to 3-ft fingernails, maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad….)
