The Secret Lives of Bees: Taffy Edition

November 14th, 2008 @ 9:33 am by Mrs. Taffy

I have had so much fun reading all of the “Secret” posts! Here are some secret and/or random facts about me:

#1 Our wedding day will be the second time I wear a wedding dress. The first time?

hc2

Homecoming, senior year of high school! I didn’t intend to wear a wedding dress. When I found out that I was chosen to be on homecoming court, my mom and I went dress shopping. I couldn’t stand the typical pastel cupcake dresses that girls on homecoming court wore, so I picked out a white one. A white one that happened to have a train… and a bustle. The price was the same as the pastel dresses, and the shop owner insisted that it wasn’t a wedding dress. Whatever it was, I loved it, and my mom split the price with me. I ended up using my money from my high school job to pay my half. In the picture above, I’m wearing a tulle shrug that was detachable!

Here’s the back-

hc3

Did you catch my date’s awesome vintage tux? That tux was sweet! He got it at a thrift store. Here’s our official portrait, high school style!

homecoming1

What a cheesy background!!! Here’s my other portrait, taken with my homecoming escort:

propc2

My dress was huge! The skirt barely fit into the frame. That was the first time I wore a hoopskirt; after that I was hooked.

sittingindress

Can you see the lovely three carnation centerpieces? Ah, high school dances.

hairhomecoming

Here I am getting my hair done before the assembly. This was the first time that I realized the importance of wearing a button down shirt to the salon!

#2 I donate blood as much as possible, and have an obsession with discovering people’s blood types.
redcross

I try to donate blood as much as I can. Needles do not bother me in the least, and I believe that it is very important to donate if I am able to. Also, my experience with the Red Cross “poking” is great—even though my veins are really difficult, they get me right away, every time!

Blood Types- My weird obsession with blood types came about when my mom disputed the type that the Red Cross gave me. My mom is O positive, and my dad was AB positive. I’m A negative, and she just didn’t believe that I could have a negative RH factor. To prove her wrong, I did some research, and became fascinated with the blood types and their ratio to the population. I started a survey among my friends and was surprised that most people didn’t know their blood types! If you are willing to donate, knowing what blood type you have can be even more incentive to get you in. O positive and O negative are the universal donor types, and if you are O negative there is even more reason to give, as people with a negative RH factor can only receive negative, and there aren’t very many of us! For example, as a person with A negative, I can only receive A- and O-. Only 6% of the US population has A-, and only 7% has O-. That’s slim pickings for the blood bank! Of course, all blood is needed. My dad was AB+, the universal receiver, and donated regularly. If you know your blood type, leave a comment! :)

When Mr. Taffy and I went on our first date, I was at the height of my blood type obsession. I didn’t bring it up so he wouldn’t think I was a weirdo. ;) I was shocked when he brought up blood types during dinner without any prompting from me! He was talking about how blood types are used as a type of horoscope in Japan. He had no idea how many points he got on that first date by bringing that up! :)

#3 I was Valedictorian of my Kindergarten class.

krisandsalud

The boy next to me was the Salutatorian. I went to a private school for Kindergarten. It was a full day of classes, and we did a lot of work! When I went to public school for 1st grade I had already been through our books. I had no idea what being Valedictorian meant, but I remember getting excited to wear the special gold sash. :) My sister graduated high school the year that I graduated Kindergarten, so we took some pictures together. I love how we switched caps and my sash!

krisandamy

Here I am giving my speech! I have no idea what I said; I should ask my mom if she remembers.

speech

Things went downhill from there. ;) I was only tenth in my class in high school! I still wore a sash!

graduation

By pure coincidence, the guy next to me is Salutatorian. I didn’t realize that until I started typing the post!

#4 I dressed up as cartoon characters and book characters at Borders for Saturday story time.
I started working at Borders my junior year of high school, and they always bribed me with gift cards to put on costumes for Saturday story time. Well, you already know that I love dressing up, so it wasn’t that hard to convince me!

pinkpanther

Here I am waiting in the stock room before my debut. That head was so heavy, it all was resting on the bridge of my nose and I thought it was going to break!

bunnicula

Here I am as Bunnicula, the vampire bunny. This was by far my favorite costume. I loved the Bunnicula series! :) The little ones even brought me carrots. It was so cute. :)

How cute were you?! Adorable!

I believe I’m B+. I tried to donate blood years ago and was told that I could NEVER donate because I lived in Europe in the 80’s when there was a mad cow outbreak. Not sure if that claus has changed in the last 5 years.

Like Jessica, I am A positive and I had to pull out my donor card to see! :) I also think it’s really fun to donate blood! I don’t enjoy the sticking, but I don’t mind it either. Plus, you get free food afterwards!

Looks like we were involved in a lot of the same stuff in high school, hehe. I had that National Honor Society sash thing too and a bunch of pins and cords that I can’t even remember what they were for.

Both my parents are O+ but I’m O- This became an issue when I was pregnant. My husband got typed and was A- which saved me from having shots. Even though two + can make a -. it doesn’t go the other way. Our children are A-
My mother-in-law is AB- hows that for rare
I’m not allowed to donate because I’m under weight :(

I’m O negative. The sad thing is, I faint every time I donate blood! And if the donor faints or gets sick, the red cross automatically throws the blood out!

@Bumble_dee:

If you wear a button down shirt, to change all you have to do is unbutton and slip it off! If you were wearing a regular shirt, you’d have to pull it over your head and risk messing up your up-do :)

Another O- here! Kinda cool to be so rare, but a pain too- especially when you’re pregnant and your husband is type A+, meaning you have to get the shots :( Maybe someday I will work up the nerve to donate blood, but the idea of watching a bag fill up with MY BLOOD… ugh. :-s Of course, since I can only receive O- blood, I guess I’d have to be greatful for anyone else who donates their O- blood- kinda selfish of me, I know ;)

I can’t donate blood because I spent half a year in London in 2003! It’s not like I was in an undeveloped country and I don’t have Mad Cow but they won’t take my blood. :(

@Bumble_dee: historybride covered me on this one, but I had no idea until I made my appointment. They made sure that I came in a button down so I wouldn’t wreck my hair later!:)

I spent my whole life thinking that I was O+ because that is what was in my medical records and that is what my Mother told me so I believed it….then at 17 I joined the Army and they said I was A+! Good thing I never needed to be given blood as a child!

this is strange.
I’m european and i’ve never lived outside of europe but here I can donate. Is it a US only regulation?

@Ruth: No worries, you would have been okaty. If you are type A, you can still recieve type O blood. Type o is a universal donor meaning it is compatible with everyone. In emergencies when they don’t have time to determine blood type they give trauma patients O negative blood.

I also have an obsession with donating blood! I couldnt’ do it for the last year because of my tattoo, but I JUST gave again for the first time.

I, too, am an A negative from a family of positives, and the only one of four girls. Mr. CP is rH positive, so I will have to take blockers during my second pregnancy (if there is one). Yeep!

@any other girl: Yes. I believe it has to do with mad cow disease and the US not wanting to contaminate the blood supply with those who may have consumed tainted meat. It’s not living in Europe overall that prevents you from giving blood (I lived in Germany for a year and that is OK) but living in the UK and some other areas. Travel to South Africa will also prevent you from giving blood, at least for some time. Travel to other countries that are malaria hot-spots will ban you for a year (I think?).

AB-! I loved the bunnicula series as well!

I was confused for a minute, but I assume you wear a button down shirt so so that you don’t have to pull a shirt over your head?

@Miss Sushi: My sister is B+. :)

@FMH: I forgot to mention the free food!!! :) I love cookies, and they let me eat as many as I want! Yum. :)

@Lynn: My future mother in law is also AB-. Mr T didn’t know his type, but he knew his parents. I thought for sure he would be negative too, but he’s A+.

@proudfarmwife: You should give it a try sometime, usually the bags are under the stretcher and you don’t even see it! :)

I wish I knew my blood type, but I don’t! I’m unable to give blood due to low iron levels. I know my sister has the same low iron problem, but she’s an O (I’m not sure if its + or -) so they’ve always allowed her to give.

@Wolff2Be: Sometimes when they do the iron test, my blood will start to sink, then float up again, then finally go down. A few times I’ve had to take an extra test to be sure. I don’t have low iron, but I am mostly vegetarian ( I eat fish sometimes) so I have to remember to have lots of iron rich foods before I go to donate. Sometimes I take an iron supplement for a few days before.

@*jen*: @Julie: Yay for A negative! :)

It’s sad, but…years ago when I was truly broke, I would try to donate last, since they would let me take all snacks I wanted.

Loved Bunnicula, lovin’ the costume :)

B+ too :-) by a very weird coincidence, i also had to dress up as Bunicula in high school! i worked on an educational farm and every year, there was a haunted hayride at Halloween. i was always Bunicula and I loved it because it made standing in the middle of a field in the middle of the night in a Massachusetts autum feel a little warmer! :-)

@Miss Deviled Egg: Nope! There were five of us on court, and one was picked for homecoming queen, but not me. :) We all had tiaras and the queen had more of a crown. One of my bridesmaids was on homecoming court with me! :)

@philoem: That’s awesome!!! Was it a similar costume??? I found out that Borders only owned or rented a few costumes at a time, and just shipped them around to the different stores. Some of them were kind of gross lol. It must have been really cozy in that costume outside in the fall!!! :)

cute story for you: When I was pregnant they were going to give me the shots unless my DH was rH-. So at one of my appointments they took his blood to type. The next week they called me and said, “The good news is that your husband isn’t pregnant, the bad news is, we ran the wrong test and need to take more blood” He had to set up his own appointment with the OBGYN.

O-pos! I actually tested myself in undergrad anatomy lab. But I can’t donate because I don’t meet the weight requirements. I wish I could, I get faint when I get my blood drawn, and it would be nice to get over that. :]

OMG! Someone else knows Bunnicula! My ex-cousin is the author of that series (well, really my mom’s cousin, but whatever, we’re a huge/messy family).

Oh, and I’m B+ (as are both my parents and all of my brothers), but I’m a carrier of campylobacter poisoning, so I can’t donate anymore. :’(
