Finding Love

November 14th, 2008 @ 11:54 am by Miss Snapdragon

So… I have a secret. A big one. Like the kind I feel like I should be super embarrassed about.

I met my soon-to-be-husband online.

Oh, the shame!!! Senor Snapdragon is equally embarrassed about this fact, so much so, that I am verboten from telling anyone… except… thousands of bees. ;)

Finding Love : wedding relationships Snap1 snap1

Here’s the deal…

Like many bachelorettes, I spent the majority of my twenties dating real tools. They might have been hot, or successful, or enormously talented, or why-the-heck-did-I-ever-pick-YOU… but they weren’t love. Never love. Once I hit the age of 26, I was ready to find real love, the kind of love where we hung around all day on the couch watching football and supporting each other through anything and everything—most of all, someone with whom I felt safe to truly be myself. To me, there is nothing more exhausting than editing everything you want to say because you are afraid your flavor of the moment is going to react negatively or is going to judge you. So… I signed up for an online matching thing-a-ma-bopper, and two weeks later, my fiance and I found each other. He disabled his account immediately after that… I kept mine going for a few more months. :) But that was really it for me. I knew that this guy was The One.

So, even though my twenties were largely all about dating the wrong guys, I am thankful because now that I’ve found the right one… I appreciate how hard love can be to find, and if I had to go to the internet to find it, that is A-OK. After all, if I can find Marc Jacobs for half-off online, why not a fiance? ;)

Did you meet your fiance in an unconventional way?

yup, online via our blogs. =) i did get some minor flack from college friends because they didn’t quite understand the whole concept but other than that everyone has been supportive. though we haven’t told our parents how we met [and i haven't said anything because it makes my head hurt just thinking about how to explain the concept of a "blog" to mine!]. we just stick to “we went to school together” because technically, we did. lol.

We met speed dating! He is so embarrassed by it, but I think it’s hilarious. None of his friends know, just that “we met in a bar” which I guess we technically did. It was pretty out of character for either one of us to try speed dating, but I guess it was fate :) Wedding is in 71 days!!!

I think that meeting online is becoming much more common. I am going to 2 weddings this summer where the couples met online:) Congrats on finding the love of your life, even in a non-traditional way!

I too met my fiance online :) But we tell everyone… we found it best to just say it and be proud of it, then ppl feel uncomfortable making fun of us. We’ve also found that most everyone knows someone else who has met their bf/fiance/spouse online.

I know - meeting online is becoming SO much more common! I am glad he’s starting to let me tell people. Before we used the “mutual friends” line. Lies, ALL LIES! ;)

We met via MySpace ::blush:: I think I get embarrassed because when people think of MySpace they think “creepy old guy” or “13-year-old.” It was the summer before his 6th and final year at Ohio University, he said he was looking for some new people to hang out with, he told me where he lived (a place known for big parties), I was 19 and looking for a place to drink underage, and the rest is history. A lot of people know, but I need to start being more proud.

Oh, and your fiance is cuuuuuute! ;)

I met my husband through my ex boyfriend, whom I met online in an avatar chat room when I was twelve years old! The ex and I dated exclusively online for 14 months before meeting in person when I moved out west. He introduced me to Mr. CP. :)

We TOTALLY met on Craigslist! It is hard not to feel weird about it for a minute, but it’s so common now. And honestly, love is love, who cares where or how you found it. I hope you and Mr. SD can get to a place where you are comfortable with not editing that fact from your love story. Someday our kids will think online dating is TOTALLY normal and there will be no stigma. As normal as having an African American president (I can’t get over how amazing it is that our children will never find this anything but ordinary.) HEART

Miss Snapdragon - you and the Mr. are SO CUTE…such a good looking couple! I love your hair too!

My husband and I didn’t meet online, but I felt like you were writing about my life when I was 26 years old too (looking for real love and EXHAUSTED from not feeling like I could just be myself).

I met my boyfriend online 7 years ago and we were so afraid of what our family and friend would think at the time that we lied to everyone about meeting “thru a friend” as well. Now…I don’t know how to tell everyone we lied…hehe. So I guess we will just continue on with the story. :-p

I just went to a wedding where the couple met online … and it made for some great stories at the wedding.

I met my fiance on match.com, and we’ve only told a few friends the truth. We have a cover story for people we don’t know so well! I don’t have a problem with telling, but he’s super embarrassed. If we all band together and tell the truth, the stigma will disappear, and more people will be open to it. Oh well!

I think your story is pretty common! We met online too, and hardly anyone knows. We tell people that we met at a bar. Which isn’t entirely a lie, because the first time we met up in person WAS at a bar. :-)

My fiance and I met online as well (after someone setup an online account for me and emailed to me through a bogus email account)….and if that wasn’t bad enough a few nights before our “first meeting/date” we were chatting and realized we were both headed to same store to pick up cleaning supplies in preparating for weekend guests….so we just met and shopped together. So I’m not sure which is worse: saying we met online, or that we met in Wal-Mart! :)

@GG+SB: That is HILARIOUS. I love me some Wal-mart.
@Sharmeen: Yeah, I think I talked Mr. Snaps into confessing at our wedding! I have middling-to-no problem with it, but he gets embarassed. Seriously though, after college it is really tough to meet someone!
@Erin: YES - I bet if we did band together, we’d find that meeting online is actually pretty common.

My husband and I met online (through The Onion personals). I was 21 and he was 26. I was going to a women’s college at the time and had just returned to the Bay Area from a different co-ed college where all the straight guys were taken, so I was ready to meet some dudes. We immediately connected through email - we were both English majors in college, and both had teaching, traveling to Africa, and the love of the outdoors in our backgrounds. It wasn’t love at first site, but we kept up a correspondence for a few months after our first date, and eventually started a relationship. 5+ years later we’re still going strong!
