Get In Shape, Girl!

November 17th, 2008 @ 6:40 pm by Mrs. Taffy

I really love to exercise. I actually look at going to the gym as a treat! Don’t look at me like I am crazy, it’s true!!

*this is not what I look like when I go to the gym*

Before I was laid off, I used to take four aerobics classes a week. I worked in two huge studios and was constantly moving back and forth between the two—walking about four miles a day! (Yes, I was dorky and wore a pedometer to work every day for a month.) My MOH and I were also taking belly dance lessons together once a week. Mr. Taffy lived in downtown Ann Arbor, so I would walk a few blocks to and from my car (and up a flight of super steep stairs) to visit him a few times a week. I would say that I was in pretty good shape!

Oh, how things have changed:

Job searching has involved me sitting in front of my laptop or desktop for hours a day. Whether I am updating my portfolio, working on a new project or searching opportunities online, the only thing that’s getting a workout (besides my mind, of course!) is my poor wrist. I stopped the belly dance lessons when I lost my job, but kept my gym membership. Working out is important to me, and I got a really great monthly rate during a promotion, less than half of what it would cost to sign up now. I had been keeping up with my gym schedule until late summer, when portfolio work, weddings, and my own wedding planning took my schedule by storm. Mr. Taffy and I now live together just outside of downtown, where we have a driveway and live on the first floor. Parking far away and climbing steep stairs is a faint memory. And it shows! I would say I’ve put on ten pounds or so… it’s hard to tell since I don’t own a scale, and I have seemed to gain the weight proportionately. Oh, did I mention that I became obsessed with Rocky Road ice cream this summer? It’s so yummy, it’s like frozen hot cocoa, only crunchy. Anyway, that did not help me one bit. ;)

I should also mention that I because of my lack of exercise, I have been having major problems sleeping. I simply wasn’t doing enough physical work to make myself tired. I’ve been exhausted mentally each night, but still excited enough to think about wedding plans and job possibilities, so while my body isn’t tired, my mind is racing. This does not add up to sleep!

I am way overdue to get back into my gym schedule at the YMCA. Yep, I work out at the YMCA. I love it! Earlier I mentioned how much I love going to the gym. There is a catch–

I only like to go to classes.

There is nothing more boring to me than working out on a treadmill or a type of weight machine, but get me in a room with a bunch of people for a class and I am ready to go!!! :) It’s not that it’s more social; most people keep to themselves. I get a much better workout by doing what the instructor tells me to during class than if I was left to my own devices, and the classes are really well rounded. Cardio, upper body, abs… it’s all included, and packaged neatly into an hour.  I’ll take any class, but have realized that my favorites are the ones that involve lots of jumping around. Most of the classes I take are step aerobics or some kind of cardio mixer. I also take a class called Butts & Guts once a week. That class is so hardcore, I am seriously frightened of going back this Friday! I have been back in the other classes for two weeks, but have been so sore I haven’t even attempted to conquer Butts & Guts. Youch!

Sometimes I think about getting some aerobic DVDs to try at home, but I don’t think it would be the same as being in a room with all of those people, watching the synchronized movements in the mirror and stomping and clapping in unison. I just think it is really fun! Also, there are lots of times when the instructor does something that I would normally never try, but because everyone is doing it together I won’t sit out. If I were at home, I would probably just laugh, let out a “hell no,” and wait, arms crossed, until the next portion of the video.

My new schedule will include three trips to the gym, and five classes. Two step classes, one cardio mixer, one body chisel class, and the beloved and extremely effective Butts & Guts. Last week was really rough, but hopefully I’ll be more used to the classes this week. I’m not changing anything diet wise, except maybe less ice cream. That should do it!

Did you start a gym routine for the first time after getting engaged? Or did you have a good gym schedule going until you got wrapped up in the wedding planning, like me?

I just have to say…the reference to “get in shape, girl” brought back so many memories. Remember the ribbons?!

i’m like that too. i NEED to be told what to do and for how long or else i’d just waste time wondering what to do before just quitting for the day after maybe 10 mins on the treadmill because that was the only machine available. lol. i cannot be left to my own devices at all. that and when i lay down money for a class, i’m more likely to go since i have money on the line!

I definitely go through spurts of working out and then slacking off, but classes definitely help. My membership is to 24hr fitness, which I think is similar to the Y in that the classes are free. Gotta love that!

Especially in this environment, there should be plenty of membership deals– these promotions may be a little old, but you can still use them to negotiate with the front desk and see if they’ll match these terms.

My *brilliant* fiance gave me a talk about “you should take better care of yourself” about two months before he proposed. Best idea ever! He made it really clear that this wasn’t about him being unhappy with my body - I’m happier when I’m working out regularly, and it shows, and I hadn’t been exercising since we moved almost a year before that.

Since then, I’ve been doing classes and cardio machines (they have tv’s attached. yay!) regularly, and i’ve lost a lot of weight. I’m definitely in better shape, and sleeping better too.

I’d been working out regularly for a while, but once I got engaged, it definitely gave me more motivation. I used to just work out on my own, but I started going to a spinning class over the summer, which I love.

I had a good thing going until a couple of weeks ago. It seems like I’m too caught up with wedding stuff lately. Good luck getting back into it!

FH and I joined a gym about 4 months before we were engaged and I signed up for a trainer there. Our goal wasn’t to become super models just healthier :) The months I’m in school and working its harder for me to make it to the gym as much and I miss it, so I feel your pain.

I hear you! I am all about working out. I used to go to the gym 5 days a week, but my new job has given me a crap schedule and now the only guarantee is twice a week. That makes me so depressed! I am trying to motivate myself to go after work around 9:00 at night, or wake up early and go before work. But that has been difficult. This cold weather makes me want to just hang out at home on the sofa with pjs on!

I have been going to the gym regularly since college. I couldn’t live without it. And I am just like you Taffy1, I love the classes! If there isn’t a class then it’s difficult to convince me to go. I am not worried about getting in shape for the wedding yet, bc ours is a LONG ways away! But I think starting 6 months before the event I’ll get in a strict routine. Good luck and happy sweating! (;

Yay! I was so happy to read this post. I just decided last night to run a 15K with my girlfriends. And that means getting my once active, now inactive booty into shape. You definitely inspired me to want to join the Y and start taking some fun classes :)

Good luck to you Miss Taffy and all in the hive getting in shape!!!

@gmg: @PrettyKitty: I remember them, and the tapes that came with the sets. I think my ribbon was lavender. :)

@Tea: @RenaissanceTrophyWife: @worcesterbride: @Jessie516: Yay for classes! It really does help so much. All of the classes that I am signed up for are free. I love the Y! :)

@CaitlinRivera: I know, when it is cold and dark I don’t want to go to the gym at the crack of dawn! I like working out in the morning and at night. I notice that when I go late at night, I seriously sleep like a baby!

@AbbieOinCO: @Golden: Thanks for the good wishes! I’m on my way to the gym right now. :)

@Tim: ok, you got me. :)
I actually do have one instructor who uses a ton of hairspray, 80’s style! She jokes that it makes her head weigh 15 punds more than usual.

This is completely unrelated to your post but I’m looking for an affordable florist in SE MI and I was wondering if you knew of anyone. We’re getting married in Dearborn if that helps. I was originally going to use the woman who did flowers for a friend’s wedding but she’s since retired. I’d love to find someone with a small business or who works out of her home.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Cecilia

I feel like the loner over here. I do not do classes. I wouldn’t go to one if paid (well, that depends on how much, I guess! :) I love the treadmill and will do the eliptical ocassionally. My fiance, who is a strength coach, made a work out plan for me and it is amazing! (PM me if you would like a copy!)
My office building has a free gym and I work out everyday at lunch. It is such a stress reliever and I want to keep working out so I don’t have to go back to work! On the weekends I hit the free gym in my condo building. Being engaged has given me a little more motivation too!

I’m actually a part-time instructor at a YMCA (i teach strength training and indoor cycling). When I got engaged, I became obsessed with the idea of having a bridal bootcamp to help me (along with any other bride or groom) working out and up to their big day! haven’t developed the class yet, but as you can imagine, both FI and I have a pretty established workout routine, but we can always use a little help.

@LittleBear: Mr. Taffy works out at his office gym too! :)

@bride2be: That’s awesome! All of the instructors that I have had at the Y are really great. I’m so happy to be getting back into my routine!

@Sandra: For the sore muscles? Thanks for the advice! :)

@ceciliap: If you want really really affordable, Eddy’s florist is good. 313 438 9130. Some of my friends used them and were very happy with the results! :) This location is in Detroit (on warren in between southfield fwy and greenfield) but they also have a royal oak location. I don’t believe they have a website currently. Hope that helps! :) (ps I just had lunch at la pita in Dearborn today!)
