Money Honey

November 17th, 2008 @ 1:06 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

This weekend I did something dreadful. Yes, that’s right folks, I sat down with my mother and we went over the wedding budget - dum dum dum!

Money Honey : wedding budget 3757416

It was actually a very productive two hours. After adding up what we’ve already spent, and estimating what we will be spending on things we’ve yet to book, I was shocked at the total! Peeps, we have spent a little over $9,000 of our $10,000 budget- EGADS!

Now, this total could possibly go down if we’re able to cut a couple of corners, but basically our money is spent. I’m shocked at how quickly it flew out of our pockets!

But, on the other hand, I’m thrilled with what we’ve been able to accomplish with so little. For $10,000 we are getting:

- A delish meal for 120 of our closest friends and family
- A beautiful ceremony site and reception hall
- A freakin’ fantastic photographer
- Live guitarist for the ceremony
- DJ who will keep the party hopping
- Custom invitations
- My gorgeous dress
- Flowers, flowers flowers! Including lush centerpieces for every table
- A yummy cake

What’s my secret? Creativity mon ami, along with a healthy dose of using our talented friends and family for everything they’re willing to donate!

Here are some of my best tips for saving some cash.

1. Cut down the guest list.
This one, I think, is fairly obvious. Fewer people equals less money spent. Now, before you go and heartlessly slash your guest list (Aunt Milly is out out out!) you probably want to think about the delicate balance going on here. We could have had a five-course plated dinner for 50 people in the most expensive, ritzy hotel in town, but that would have meant cutting out people who are important to us. Everything in moderation. Does Aunt Milly need to attend your wedding? Or should your mother’s bridge partner’s cousin stay home? You catch my drift.

2. Don’t give up on flowers, just get creative!
I entertained the idea of candles, or some other form of alternate centerpieces, but in the end I couldn’t give up those gorgeous, petaly blooms! So instead of scrapping them, I got a little crafty. Roses, peonies, orchids and the like are all very veeeery expensive. But greens and filler flowers are cheap! Our gorgeous, full centerpieces for every single table? Baby’s breath. That’s right, 1980s ugly filler flower baby’s breath actually looks GORGEOUS bunched together! And costs about $20 for a huge centerpiece (and I’m talking HUGE). Fab, no?

3. Use your friends and family
I’m willing to bet that you’ve got some people in your life with mad skillz. Take me, for example. Sister Powder Puff is a talented graphic designer. Mr. Powder Puff’s aunt bakes wedding cakes. So what does this mean for the wedding? Well, you better believe I asked my sister to design our invites, and Mr. PP’s aunt is baking our cake for us at cost. Easily, that has saved us over $1000, maybe more.

4. Try new vendors
We were able to score a fabulous photographer without having to promise her our firstborn. How? She’s relatively new to the industry. Now, this can be a gamble, so you have to be selective, but it can turn out AWESOME! She’s doing all of our photography for less than half of what others in our area are charging.

How are you saving money on your wedding?

Miss PowderPuff– Do you have any pics of what you’re doing for the baby’s breath centerpieces? I’ve been obsessed with them for months but haven’t been able to get too many good inspiration pics for my florist… have any sources?

1) We’re getting married in November, so we save $500 on our venue fee.
2) We picked a photographer who is not as well known, but is about to be, as she just started sponsoring a well known wedding blog!
3) We are doiong very little with flowers. I love flowers, but hate the cost. We may just DIY the centerpieces-if we do floral centerpieces at all.
4) We are getting married in an suburban area instead of a major city.

@Robin: We’re getting married in Michigan, so we’re using a photographer up there. Sorry! @budgetbeautiful: Sure thing! I loved the centerpieces at this wedding, which you can see at the bottom of the page. Baby’s breath in clear vases. Gorgeous!http://www.sedonabride.com/blog/2008/06/jennifer-josh-lauberge-de-sedona.html

1. Ebayed my 6k Amsale wedding dress for $300. It’s never been worn. Best. Deal. Ever. Thank goodness for being a sample size.
2. DIY…almost everything. We’re 7 months out and I’ve started on decorations. Martha Stewart pom poms, jazzed up cupcake stands, the works. I’m also planning on doing pocketfold invitations despite my lack of graphic design talent. Somewhat amusingly, it seems that crafts are a way to manage my anxiety.
3. Lunchtime reception. We can get away with no booze and vegetarian food (that’s more a personal choice than budget). We’re getting classy cheese platters and other such prepared food, which will be much cheaper and also allow us to pick and choose from different places. We might end up making some food ourselves. We’ll probably hire a couple of people to take care of the buffet and such.
4. No flowers. They’re expensive and die. I’m not sure exactly what we’re doing, but I can buy things when I see them on sale.
5. Michael’s and AC Moore 50% coupons. I’ve gotten my paper cutter, glue gun, and all sorts of fun stuff for super duper cheap.

Mr. Taffy and I just went over ours last night! How were we supposed to sleep after that? ;)

We also saved a lot with a graphic designing sibling. Mr T’s brother is designing all of our stationary, and is also paying for all of the paper and envelopes as a gift! He’s using the gocco to print each one by hand. We are sooo lucky.

I’m going to make my veil, probably for a tiny fraction of the cost vs. buying one.

Congrats on finding the awesome yet affordable photographer! :)

We have cut the guest list by quite a bit… sorry, but your softball team can’t come! We actually won our invitation suite, which saved some money. We’ve got a few more things up our sleeves, but we need to make them happen.

Lots and lots of Michael’s coupons. We are making centerpieces with square vases fill with river rocks, floating flowers and tea lights. I have 5 people collecting weekly coupons and I make a weekly run and just get a couple things at a time. It’s time-consuming, but will save me several hundred on reception decor.

Also, I plan on buying lights after christmas.

I am buying flowers from a fresh flower market in downtown Chicago the day before the wedding and having my talented aunt arrange the bouquets and put the last minute touches on the centerpieces on the morning of the big day!

We were blessed to have a reception site that includes SO MUCH! They also lowered the minimum of by $1500 without us even asking!
They include Cocktail hour w/ champagne and hors d’oeuvres, Dessert table (which may double as take home favors), 2 chocolate fountains, Floral centerpieces (which are actually very pretty and fit our cutsie country theme very well), the cake, all upgrades linens, chair covers etc (which for some reason my mom was dead set on, so mercifully we dont have to pay more for something we don’t care about) and even more I can’t remember!
Plus if we take some of the extras off (who needs choc. fountains AND dessert table AND cake???) they will take even more money off per person (so we can add a few more guests if need be).
We are also DIYing stationary, flowers, most decorations, videography (w/ help of a nephew of course), and favors.
I knew I didnt want to spend a fortune on one day, so I took a look at what was really important and that became our priorities, and thought about what I wouldn’t care about in a year, or twenty and that got cut completely.
Weddings should be about committing your lives to one another, not how much money you can waste. Bravo to all my fellow thrifty brides out there!
