Change of Heart

November 18th, 2008 @ 2:10 pm by Mrs. Lemonade

Mr. Lemonade and I went home to San Antonio once again this weekend. We were on a mission to find the perfect rehearsal dinner venue. Now, you may be thinking — didn’t we already have the RD venue in the bag? Well, yes and no. You see, we love the place, we really do, but we have had building concerns RE: location. The restaurant is located on the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. I’m not sure if you know this, but San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the US. The Riverwalk is a HUGE tourist attraction that is constantly bustling with people. Also, our RD will be on a Friday which lends itself to rush hour traffic.

Oh, and Fiesta. Yeah, I think I mentioned this, but Fiesta opens the same day. Thousands of tourists will be descending upon the city and only about a hundred of them will be ours. I am envisioning pandemonium. Thus, Mr. Lemonade and I decided to hit up a few of our favorite Mexican restaurants that aren’t located in downtown San Antonio, to see if we could find an equally tasty and authentic venue.

While we had a whole list of venues we wanted to check out we ended up calling it a day after our first one! Seriously, it’s that perfect.

Any local gals care to guess the venue?

Well, I suppose it wasn’t that hard to guess the venue if you’re a native of San Antonio (and big time margarita fan) like my best friend and bridesmaid, C. She sent me a very excited late night email with one line - “La Fogata… BEST MARGARITAS!!!” She’s right too, by the way. La Fogata has been voted the best margaritas in San Antonio for like 28 of the 30 years they’ve been around. The location is PERFECT as it’s located on the same side of town as our hotel block and the country club. The place is also a local instiution and has even been listed in Patricia Schultz’s book, 1000 Places to See Before You Die.

Is it April yet?

What’s the vibe of your rehearsal venue?

my vibe is rustic elegance and I founda cute little country club, apprpriately named “Old Oak” that was the perfect site for our reception.

OMG this is where we take all of our job candidates who come interview with us! It’s such a good place to take people so they can get a vibe of San Antonio.

Good call on not doing the Riverwalk. This is our first year living downtown and it’s going to be mayhem at Fiesta, I just know it.

We had our rehearsal dinner at a bowling alley! Very laid back, we reserved the room that they use mostly for kids’ birthday parties and ordered pizza to be delivered there. And that was it! Everyone bowled, ate pizza, drank cheap beer, and had a blast :)

I decided to have a destination wedding, but when I was considering having a hometown affair, La Fogata was our choice too! It’s very San Antonio– a great place to take out of town guests! And yes, the Riverwalk will be WAY too crazy during Fiesta! Good choice!

Our rehearsal dinner will be at an amazing German restaurant, famous for their sausages. Yes, we’ll be serving bratwursts (along with a few less ethnic entrees). I had a few reservations at first, but it’s my fiance’s all-time favorite place (so I score bonus points for saying ok). Plus, the rehearsal is on the same day as my (German) grandparents’ wedding anniversary. I’m pretty sure they’re gonna love it - great beer and heavenly desserts (cream puffs and German chocolate cake!). I can’t wait!

Excellent choice! I looooove La Fogata, although out-of-towners generally aren’t equal to the heat of the salsa!

Not equal to the heat of the salsa? I take that as a personal challenge. Let me go book my flight :)

I love that place!! Perfect for sitting outside and enjoying a margarita or two. :) I really like the margaritas at Paloma Blanca on Broadway even if they do come in a stupid martini glass. For the best salsa in town, I think Tomatillos (owned by the same people) is the best! :)

I am from San Antonio but live in NYC now… wish I could be back though :)
