The Wedding Soundtrack

November 18th, 2008 @ 11:09 am by Mrs. Espresso

Mr. Espresso and I LOVE music. We spend much of our “fun money” on concerts and in many ways, the music we listen to helps define us. Different songs and albums remind us of different moments and travels of our life. I was constantly playing the old Jimmy Eat World album when we started “going out” in high school. “With or Without You” was playing on the radio the day Mr. E pulled to the side of the road in the rain- just to kiss me. Pete Yorn, Smashing Pumpkins, and Sigur Ros remind me of boarding in Tahoe. The new Verve album reminds me of driving up Vancouver Island on our honeymoon. And the music we chose for October 4th, will always remind me of different moments throughout our wedding.

It was incredibly difficult for to choose between live and recorded music for our wedding. So when Brian Stodart said he could do both, and for a reasonable price, we felt like we hit the wedding music lottery. Throughout the entire reception we had folks complimenting us on Brian’s music. A few people even thought he was still dj’ing (during his live sessions) until they looked over and saw him singing and playing- he was that good.

I was so happy that people were enjoying Brian’s music. But then we had guests also compliment our recorded music selection for the ceremony, and that made me happy as well. So without further ado, here is our Wedding Soundtrack.

Pre- ceremony: (All Recorded)

  • Assorted mix of Jack Johnson, Eagles, Dean Martin, Ryan Adams, Frank Sinatra, John Mayer, Kings of Convenience, etc…

Ceremony: (All Recorded)

  • Seating of the Parents/ Grandparents: Orange Sky by Alexi Murdoch
  • Wedding Party Entrance: It’s Good to be in Love by Frou Frou
  • Bridal Entrance: Love and Some Verses by Iron and Wine
  • Recessional (Happy ‘We’re Married!’ Song): Lucky Man by The Verve

Cocktail Hour and Dinner:

  • Fantastic, Relaxing, and Romantic Live music by Brian Stodart. You can watch a clip of him on one of my old posts.

Wedding Party Entrance:
(Recorded)

  • Bridesmaids and Groomsmen: Mary Jane’s Last Dance by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers (hehe, kind of caught our guests by surprises with that one)
  • Bride and Groom: So Alive by Ryan Adams

First Dance and After Dinner Dancing: (All Recorded)

  • First Dance: Wonderwall by Ryan Adams (Mr E and I have 2 songs- this is the first)
  • Like the pre- ceremony music, we gave Brian a list of artists we’d like to hear. He fully supported the fact that we wanted to hear certain music, but reminded me that it wasn’t typical wedding/ “dance” music. I smiled and happily said, “I know.” And like a good man, he smiled back and played everything we wanted to hear.
  • Our mix included: All I need by Matt Kearney (our second song), Dave Matthews Band, Journey, Foreigner, Tom Petty, more Ryan Adams (I obviously can’t get enough), Slow Dancing in a Burning Room by John Mayer, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Jack Johnson, and more kick- back, good time music

Below is one of my favorite memories from our wedding. American Girl by Tom Petty came on and my Papa came out and started dancing with me. He wore me out! And I couldn’t stop singing that song for days. Hands down one of the best moments of my life.

And finally our Grand Exit Song: Shut Us Down by Lindsey Buckingham.

  • It was late, ‘Shut Us Down’ was streaming through the towering , dark pines, and our guests divided to create a long path to our limo. I was worried because the song had just started and I couldn’t find Mr. E. amongst all our guests. That’s when he grabbed my hand and looked at me with a smirk. It was time to leave…

These are the memories I remember every time I hear one of the songs off our Wedding Soundtrack. Which of yours are you most excited about?

Awww, what a great recap. I also associate a ton of memories with music– thanks for sharing with us! That picture of you and your Papa is completely adorable, too.

Ryan Adams is the soundtrack to our lives, so his music was all through our wedding. I walked down the aisle to Desire. We signed the registry to Follow the Lights, and we walked back up the aisle to Dance All Night. Such beautiful music and words to set your memories to!

We’re doing mostly Indie music… We are music fiends, and I have loved living in the Seattle music scene for the past 4 years.

We’ll probably recess to “Signed Sealed Delivered” by Stevie Wonder. I’ve got lots of good associations with that song!

We have many talented friends and we’re encouraging them to bring their instruments for the rehearsal dinner. You know, a bunch of musicians jamming in the woods in Tahoe… How can you beat that?

I think the hard part is going to be identifying some classics for the “old folks”… but I think we have a portion of the dancing music that will bridge that gap… (can’t say more than that right now).

I’m glad to see that there are other couples who love music as much as we do!

@melissa:oh my gosh! Because of you Desire has been in my head all day long! I LOVE that you walked down to that!
@doctorgirl: So jealous of you living in Seattle! Home of grunge music, Starbucks, and cloudy weather! And musicians jamming in the woods?! What?! Your wedding is going to be awesome!
