About Miss Snapdragon

What to do When You Have the Largest Family in the World : wedding CheaperOK, we should probably have a talk before you and I go much further… I don’t think I am going to be able to keep this secret for very long, as you might begin to wonder who all of those seemingly unrelated people in my blogs-to-come photos came from….

Every bride and groom has a special set of circumstances that drive how they put together their wedding day. Some couples might have family scattered throughout the globe. Some might have to figure out how to navigate the tricky waters of divorced families. Others have huge budget challenges - the list goes on and on!

My challenge is how to honor everyone when you have the LARGEST FAMILY IN THE WORLD.

You might want to sit down.

Jon and Kate plus 8? Try multiplying that a few times. The Gilbreths of Cheaper by the Dozen fame? NOPE, though I LOVED their books when I was a little kid. The Duggars? Mmmm, STILL not big enough.

I have seven sisters and thirteen brothers. Take a moment to digest, sister.

I never, ever, ever tell people (except for on the world wide web, ack!). Sometimes, you just never know how people are going to react, so I choose to protect myself most of the time. The reason my family is so big is because my parents decided - when I was very little - that they wanted to adopt as a way to build their family. The big thing is, they wanted to adopt the kids who often never get adopted. There is a waiting list a million miles long for healthy newborns, but older and disabled kids… they are extremely lucky when they get adopted, unfortunately.

Many of my siblings are from other countries, and we cover most all of the races and many sorts of disabilities, which to me, is AWESOME! To be honest, I think the best way to combat racism, sexism, and just discrimination in general, is to have a “mixed-up family.”

Anyway, as you can imagine, this makes planning the wedding a bit of a challenge because not only do I want to honor all of them in some way, but I also had to find a venue where my family, who is driving up from Texas (!) will be comfortable. Surprise, surprise, many locations don’t make accommodations for people with disabilities, and Chicago has many “historic” buildings that are pre-ADA. It also had to be affordable since my family would have to book so many rooms. Luckily, I found such a magical location! More to come on the venue front…

I do have to laugh though, because even though so many of my family members have disabilities, they still tear it up on the dance floor. We are TERRIBLE dancers, but enthusiastic. My baby brother actually took a running start and slid on his knees allllllllllllllllllllllllll the way across the dance floor at my sister’s wedding, all while ripping off his tuxedo jacket. He was ten. :)

(whew)

OK, now that that confession’s out of the way… what has been your biggest wedding challenge so far?? Is it stressing you, or did the pieces fall into place naturally?

-Miss Snapdragon, she of the really big fambly. ;)

Wow…that’s really inspiring. What your parents did is a wonderful example of how a little love and patience can really change someone’s life for the better. I commend your parents for being so willing to be your adoptive siblings’ family.

On the plus side, you’ll have a very large group of supporters at your wedding!

- angeldoc of the very small family - just four of us!

Impressive! I always love to hear adoption stories… and big family stories. My dad is the fourth oldest of 16, all born to my grandparents, and my sister is adopted– I definitely value what you have, albeit on a piece by piece basis!

O.M.G. WOW! OK, now you have to post a family photo!! To honor them all without making them all a part of your wedding party, there is the typical give them corsages and bouts. It might be a little more fun to give all the girls flowers for their hair and umm… hmm… no idea for your bros. Ask them to incorporate a certain color into their outfit? They dont all need to wear color X dress and ties, but a just incorporate it in some way, a flower, shoes, or whatever.

That’s absolutely beautiful. It’s really great to adopt so many children in the first place, but then to go out of their way to provide a family for those who often wouldn’t find one….Wow. So amazing.

It must have been tough for Mr. Snapdragon to keep everyone straight at first - my DH had it easy in comparison with my 10 siblings!

I have to ask, how many of them have lived under the same roof at one time? (For an example my mother had 6 siblings, but because of age gaps, there were never more than 4 living at home at a time). What do you think of all the TV shows dedicated to these large families - are they realistic, etc.? How many biological children did your parents have? And finally, you said your mom home schooled you - was she homeschooling all 20 of you? Wow! To answer your question, one of our wedding challenges was that my FI has a tiny family (he’s an only child, parents are only children) and they aren’t that social - where as we have more of an average size family, and very social parents - so that meant my family plus family friends were a lot larger than his side.

My immediate family is not large, but my extedned family is, my mom is one of 8 and we are really close to all my aunts, uncles and cousins. I am having a hard time including all the people I want to as well. So far we have been trying to think of each persons unique talents and personalities to include them, for example I have a cousin who has the most beautifuk voice and she will sing at the ceremony, my fiances cousin plays the piano and is amazing so she will play at the ceremony. I have an aunt and cousin who do hair and they will help me and the bridal party and will be mentioned in the program. My sister and 1 cousin will be bridesmaids, my borther, and his brother will be groomsmen, my uncle/godfather will hand out the host at the service, my aunt and fiance’s aunt will do readings, and we will each pick a cousin to bring up the gifts during the ceremony. We still have other people we want to include and are having trouble as well on how to include them. So I’ll be interested to hear how you handle this too!

You area part of the Avocado dream family! Mr. Avo wants 500 children, not even joking! I don’t think we can afford that many, and I certainly won’t be pushing that many out, so there is a distinct possibility we will be adopting someday. If we are living in Europe at the time we will probably be able to adopt cute little European children. Was your family on that Oprah show where she gave away all the money because I saw a family just like yours and I admired them so much. My cousin has Downs and she always provides for a bunch of hilarious moments, a few of them at my wedding. I am so excited for your wedding photos now, there are going to be so many hilarious moments!

@Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride: That is a great idea - I think I will give all the guys a bout and then the girls can have a mini-bouquet (some are too shy to be a bridesmaid, so a mini-bouquet might be just the ticket!) @Wolff2Be: Currently, the baby is 12 and the oldest is 35. I am the third oldest!@BucknellBride: I must say, Mr. Snaps was a bit overwhelemed the first time he came to Texas to visit. We have extremely heated board games (we are ALL cheaters.) He had to hide in his room a few times. :) We also played practical jokes on him - he is a trooper!
@enmoore66: We all lived under the same roof at the same time. The vast bulk of us are currently between 18-25. The kids with serious disabilities will always live at home. Right now, twelve live at home…my Dad thinks it’s extra quiet; they are still getting used to it. I am sure that the TV shows are realistic to those particular families (Jon&Kate, Duggars, etc.,) but since our family is made up of a diverse set of backgrounds/disabilities, our day-to-day experience is a bit different. And the most my mom homeschooled at one time was probably six. No one went all the way through grade school being solely homeschooled, so that meant not all of us were being homeschooled at the same time.
@Newport Nuptials: I hear you, sister. We will figure this out together.
@Mrs. Avocado: Lol to Mr. Avo! You better watch out, or he’ll talk you into having a huge family, too!

Have you tried the nonprofit Accessible Chicago? May be worth giving them a call.

Thrilled to see a bride take accessibility into consideration! :-D

As part of a couple that is planning to adopt from around the world, I salute your family.

I’m always so impressed with the love and dedication shown by the adoptive and foster parents of special needs kids. Invariably they make me tear up when I’m seeing their kids. I’ve never met more self-less people.

You do your table names in honor of your sibs… that way all the guest could see tributes to each one, though you may have to double up depending on how many guests you have!

Planning from far away. Well… not really that far. Just two hours. But you wouldn’t believe how hard even that makes planning! I have nothing done :p

Miss Snap, do you have a little brother at college in southern MI?? Your family sounds a LOT like how one of my classmates described his to me!
