Filler Flower Fantasticness

November 19th, 2008 @ 1:17 pm by Mrs. Dumpling

Like Miss Powder Puff, I needed to find a way to make chic centerpieces without going broke. She’s definitely a woman after my own heart! People always ask me, “What is your favorite flower?” Well, my favorite flower is and always will be carnations and my second favorite flower (or whatever) is baby’s breath. I know, I know, they’re cheap filler flowers you can get at a grocery store. Don’t care! I guess it makes sense though, since I kinda prefer imitation handbags over the real thing, and store brand OJ over the fancy kind from Florida.

Lately we’ve been thinking about how we can decorate our reception room, but still stay within our budget (which isn’t much). We thought about just using a few stems of pink hydrangeas in plain vases, giving a nice contrast to our white china and chocolate brown tablecloths. I did a mock-up of it and honestly, it looked kinda plain. After trying a few different combinations and looking at prices compared to what we would get in return, we weren’t having any luck. Then I remembered a picture I saw on a photography blog that always gives me inspiration (not to mention gorgeous pictures to look at!) and quickly showed it to Mr. Dumpling, who agreed that it was THE AWESOMEST.

See the baby’s breath in the middle? Yummy! Baby’s breath is not something you would usually see used as a centerpiece, but we’re just gonna go for it, because that’s how we roll. All random-like.

So, for very little money, we are going to have something both unique and cost effective. The photo below is the “look” we are going for, but instead of a dome of greenery, we are doing a dome of baby’s breath. To jazz it up a little bit, we are probably going line the bottom with pink roses. Remember, our tablecloths are chocolate brown and our china is white. Neapolitan explosions everywhere you look!

Have any of you used baby’s breath as a main centerpiece? I’d love some inspirational photos if you have them! If not, what kinds of flowers did you use that were both chic and cheap?

Oh man - centerpieces are the bane of my existence. I hate how much they cost and they REALLY only are good for the one day. I am keeping my eye on you and Powderpuff for affordable centerpieces!

Here’s one beautiful baby’s breath bouquet. I JUST saw a wedding with all baby’s breath, too. I’ll post it if I find it again!

I just saw a blog today that had babies breath for the brides bouquet, centerpeices which were tall ones in simple glass vases and along the fence of her ceremony. She was an event coordinator too.Simple but so beautiful and delicate, I cant find it now to show you! darn! Probably the same one as missteaberry is talking about!

Isn’t that the wedding I posted about earlier? You can see more details at Sedona Bride, or over at The Bride’s Cafe, where I saw it originally.

There was an episode of “whose wedding is it anyway” with a New York couple who had baby breath arrangements in tall vases and it was absolutely stunning. The floral part was very cloudlike and the vase silver I think. It was so sophisticated and the bride mentioned that she saw that look in a Japanese magazine and loved it ever since.

For the life of me I can’t remember the name of the coordinator but it was an early episode, maybe, season 2 or 3.

As you mentioned you love carnations so what about some carnations center pieces?

I found lots of pics (the whole page is full of carnation center piece ideas) on the following blog:

and this one (a lot of the same pictures but the bottom one might work well with what you have in mind)http://eventivacom.wordpress.com/2008/08/02/wedding-of-carnations/

I definitely second that on the Sedona Bride posting at the Bride’s Cafe. I’ve had that bookmarked for a while because I was thinking of using baby’s breath. I absolutely loved the clear vases they used. I searched and searched for the vases but unfortunately found them at $80 a piece.

I am also searching for cost friendly centerpiece options for my upcoming wedding. Unfortunately, my fiance does not like baby’s breath or carnations, so those are out of the question. So I have been considering options for non-flower centerpieces. We are probably going to end up using ostrich feathers in our centerpieces.

Also, I’m all about variety, so I want a few different versions…. the centerpieces are going to range from tall, thin vases of feathers to a cylindrical vase with black rock at the bottom and a few feathers suspended up the cylinder. We are also going to decorate the tables with candles and some will have a few small bowls of roses. The coolest part is my florist is going to let me come in and play with centerpiece ideas prior to the wedding so we get it just right.

You can find the ostrich feathers at Hobby Lobby stores, and they go on sale frequently. They are much cheaper than flowers, and I think white feathers would go GREAT with brown and pink!

I’m avoiding the centerpiece flower issue altogether by using lanterns as our table centerpieces. The lanterns were $10 each and the candles were on sale for about $1.80 each.

But I LOVE the idea of baby’s breath. I think it will look great with your color scheme.

We’re not using any florals for decorations (potted ferns, etc. instead for our rustic/nature theme). But, I do plan on DIYing my own baby’s breath bouquet - it seems to be growing in popularity for bouquets and centerpieces. Now that I’ve seen some centerpieces, I almost want to go back on my idea to not use floral centerpieces.

I’m actually growing half of the centerpieces pre-wedding. My mom has several of an ivy-type plant that’s called Bridal Veil (fitting, right?). It’s a dark, rich green leaf that’s purple underneath and has tiny white blooms similar to Baby’s Breath. It’s easy to transplant and isn’t fussy about how well it’s taken care of. We’re planting groups of it in tins we picked up at Target this last June in the $1 Spot (20 tins for $20!) and spray painted white. Then we’ll add stems of fresh daisies for the reception and stick in some taper candles.

Ooh, count me among the carnation lovers, Miss D! I even think they SMELL better than just about any other flower — kind of subtle and spicy.
