Oh How That Caged Bird Sings!

November 19th, 2008 @ 4:59 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

Well girls, I did it! After lots of bridal indecision, and a couple of phone calls to my stylist (aka Sister Powder Puff), I went ahead and ordered a birdcage veil. That’s right, no drop veil for me, I am birdcage all the way! I also did some crafting this weekend and made myself a pretty little feathery flower fascinator.

I ordered this beauty from Something Bold.

Gorgeous, no? I’m thrilled, and can’t wait for it to arrive.

In lieu of paying $50+ for a flower to wear on the side of my head, I decided to get crafty and make one.

Here’s what I used:

  • 1 package of feathers, $1.50
  •  1 hair comb, $1.50
  •  1 silk rose, $2.00

Total: $5.00

Ten minutes and a smidge of hot glue later, I had this:

You likey? I simply took apart the flower in order for it to lie closer to my head, glued it back together with some feathers mixed in, and added in some pearls to the center. Easy peasy!

This was such a productive weekend! I’m basking in the wonderful, warm, fuzzy feelings of an on-schedule bride.

What accessory did you save the most money on by making it yourself?

My two canaries are singing in their cage as I read this! How funny. :) The veil is beautiful, and the flower is lovely!

Well you are just a crafty little genius. I ordered the same birdcage from something bold. I wasn’t as smart as you and probably should have attempted to create something like this instead of paying a lot for mien (that looks really similar!).

@tammi: Thank you! Seriously, it was the easiest thing I’ve ever made. I’m considering making ones for my bridesmaids to wear as well- very quick project that packs a punch! You could even attach one to a headband or something. So many possibilities! :)

Wow, that flower looks gorgeous, and very similar to one I am indeed thinking of spending $50 on!

Where did you get the silk flower and feathers from?

@lou: JoAnn Fabrics. I don’t know if that store is a Michigan thing or not, but I’m sure you could find the same thing at Michaels, or any other craft store.

Love it!! I was thinking about doing this as well but concerned it wouldn’t look right with my dress!

I made my own hair flower in a similar fashion as yours. I actually didn’t use feathers (although they are extremely pretty- yours is gorgeous). I used a mix of a dismantled silk flower and layers of organza and silk duponi petals I cut myself. Then I sewd swavorski crystals to the middle and sewed the whole thing onto an alligator clip. Your right about how easy it was. I would definately recommend this project to anyone!

So, I engaged in a similar project last weekend (wedding is in February, btw) and my darling mister said “it’s really nice, but isn’t it a little early for that sort of thing?” Talk about being on schedule. Boys are silly.

I got a custom designed birdcage veil for my wedding. The designer recently launched an online store at http://www.5eizen.etsy.com. She has one of a kind designs on that site but she also does custom orders.
