Love at First Sight

November 19th, 2008 @ 11:51 am by Miss Snapdragon

Many girls CAN’T WAIT to buy their wedding dress. Although I started out being way more excited about our invitations than my dress… (Hi, Crafty-Nerd!)… the sands are starting to shift.

Probably my single biggest inspiration for my wedding is Grace Kelly. In general, she had the most incredible clothes and she was so… graceful. She epitomizes vintage chic, hands down! Just take a look at her incredible wedding to Prince Ranier of Monaco:

I. Can’t. Stand it.Can anybody top this??? I don’t think copying Grace Kelly’s dress would quite work today, unless one of us is marrying the Prince of Monaco, as well, BUT I think her style can certainly be reinvented into a modern, classic version. Let’s not kid ourselves, I am no Grace Kelly, but I can work a little bit of tulle!

My mother is an antiques dealer, and she has included vintage clothing as part of her store in the past. One time, when I was in high school, she acquired this AMAZING strapless white tulle party dress from the 1950s. It was so beautiful - it’s still my favorite dress that I have ever been allowed to wear (yes, I pestered my mom into letting me borrow it a few times - thanks, mom!). I wish I had a picture of it because it swooshed when I swooshed and twirled when I twirled… Oh, young love. :)

Of course, I could NEVER wear it today, as it must have been a size zero, and, um… I am not a size zero anymore by a long shot!

In looking for a wedding dress, I have been looking for a dress that was modern, but paid tribute to wedding dresses of years past. I think I might have found one, and I am trying not to fall in love because… what if I try it on and I look terrible in it? Or what if it doesn’t live up to my expectations? SO, I have to keep my feelings in check until I meet said gorgeousbeautifuldressthatIamcrushingreallyhardon. (sigh)

Here’s a sneak peek - if you’re a wedding design stalker, you may recognize it:

Anybody else trying not to fall too hard, too soon?

Those pics remind me of a monique I once knew….

Be warned, whenever you go in expecting a dress to let you down, it will snap you right up into its clutches and never let you go :)

I have a really difficult to fit body (34DDs, size 10, only 5′4′) so I tried really hard not to fall for any styles before trying them on. I ended up with something that I never would have imagined would be flattering & it turned out just perfectly!

I’ve been in love with Grace Kelly’s dress since forever! My mom is making me a replica of her dress using a vintage Mcalls ( I believe) pattern! She’s convinced that it wont come out great/wants to buy me my wedding gown- but I have total confidence in her sewing skills (she made all my clothes growing up). So I told her I’d wear the replica for my brial portraits and DTD, but I think I just might let her buy me a get-a-way dress and wear the replica for the big day!

Looks intriguing…

I’d say find something with some sort of sleeves or straps to get a look close to hers– not long sleeves, cap or something like that would work.

She was gorgeous, eh?

@Miss Snapdragon: You have no idea how many times something looked better on the model than my flat-chested self. I finally got the chicken cutlet stick-on boobies. Im gonna go look that dress up right now!! You’re gonna be beautiful!

@Miss Dumpling: I know I know - it’s a Sophia Tolli! I will be trying it on in T-minus 1 week, upon which time there will be full disclosure. Cross your fingers that it’s not one of those, “Well, it looked really good on the model…” ;)

[...] As stated before… I was DREADING bridal gown shopping. I hate to shop; I can never find cocktail dresses that I like/flatter my body - the reasons to be annoyed go on and on… I had to psyche myself up to start looking for a wedding dress, hence why I am really riding the “deadline” to order a dress.
