Guide to the Birdcage Veil

November 20th, 2008 @ 5:51 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

Maybe it’s just me being true to my hair color, but when I got my glorious birdcage veil in the mail I was a little befuddled as to how to wear it. Where should the comb go? Why is it sticking out so much!? Gahh!!!

After a little bit of experimenting, I think I’ve figured it out, and naturally I’d like to share the fruits of my labor with you all! Now, there are a million ways to wear a birdcage veil, which is one of the things I love about it, but this is my particular interpretation.

Here is Miss Powder Puff’s Official Guide to the Birdcage Veil:

1. Open the package and take out your veil. Most birdcage veils have a comb sewn in with the netting gathered around it. It will look like this:

To me, the comb looked backwards on the veil, until I realized pushing it forward in your hair would make it more secure. Genius!

2. There are several different ways to put the veil in your hair. You can place it directly back in your hair, which looks like this:

See how I’m pushing it forward in my hair? Push hard enough and it will REALLY stay, surprisingly enough. And I’m all about security. And saucy gazes, apparently.

3. Unless you like a poofy look, you’ll want to bobby pin the veil strategically to get the look you want. I bobby pinned on the sides in the back to reduce the poof.

4. Get creative! This type of veil can be adapted to many different styles, etc. For example, you could also place the comb on the side of your head, to get this look:

Here’s a view of the side of the veil with the fascinator I constructed.

Now I’ve reached another crossroad, dear reader, and I need your help to make a decision. I love the look of the veil on the side of my head. BUT, I also really like placing the veil straight back. Check out this evidence of awesomeness:

Here’s the side view. I like how the flower is placed a little lower on my head. Also, do not be distracted by the disgusting bun-type thing that seems to be popping off the back of my head.

What do you think, hive? Front or side?

It’s hard to tell, because of the difference in flower placement, and that in one pic your hair is up, and one it’s down. Will you be having your hair up or down?

SO CUTE! All the looks are GREAT, but I like the last two photo the best (straight back?) … you are wearing your gray sweatshirt

I agree that it’s hard to compare the two looks because in the pic where the flower is higher on your head, we don’t get to see what that looks like straight on from the front.

I really want to wear a birdcage veil too, but like you, I’m a little freaked about how exactly to put it on. Have you decided whether you’re going to wear it all day or not? One of the real brides on the Somethingbold website flipped hers back, so she had a little short veil look going on. I thought that was a nice alternative for later in the reception when I wouldn’t want my face to be covered.

The second to last pic is my favorite - so whatever you did to get it that way :)

The side is very cute - but I think wearing it straight back (err - whatever it is in the bottom 2 photos) looks like a beautiful bride. Just my 2 cents.

@lou: Well, I’m not sure how I’m going to be wearing my hair. I’m thinking up, but that could change because I’m chopping about an inch or so off in t-minus 6 days.

It sounds like my pictures need a bit of clarifications. The two pictures under #4 are when the veil is placed on the side of my head. The bottom two where I’m in the grey sweatshirt are when the veil is placed straight

For my opinion;

If you want a traditional look the staright way is suitable and if you want a cute look the side way is nice.

You are too cute, sausiness and all.

If you in the grey sweatshirt is the straight option, then that’s the one I vote for. I like how the flower is placed a lil’ lower.

I like it to the side so you can see the flower when you look straight ahead or from the back. :)

DId yours poke out at a crazy angle? We ended up steaming mine over a paper towel roll to shape it correctly. I should have taken pictures as I am sure there are others who have struggled with the same issue. Yours has a really nice shape though!

Wearing your veil from the side looks so sassy and chic! If that’s the look you’re going for, I definitely say: SIDE!

I love the bottom two photos with the flower in that low position! Did you make that yourself, or where did you find it?
